Hello, I am a student and I am really struggling with the amount of time I have to spend reading text on a screen. I have spent the past few years reducing my screen time, and now that I have started school I am struggling with the massive intake of screen time. Is there a dark mode setting on the web browser for Canvas?

For best performance, Instructure products should be used on the current or previous major releases of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. Because Instructure products are built using web standards, Instructure products run on Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android, or any other device with a modern web browser.
Instructure products require an operating system that can run the latest compatible web browsers. Your computer operating system should be kept up to date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades.
Note: Vanity Canvas URL users may encounter SSL validation errors when they open Canvas if their browser or any other tools interacting with Canvas are not Server Name Indication (SNI) compatible. All browser versions listed in this guide are SNI compatible.
Supported Browsers
The widget above searches your current browser settings and indicates your browser status. You should always use the most current version of your preferred browser. Your browser will notify you if there is a new version available. Cookies and JavaScript should be enabled.
Unsupported Browser Banner in Canvas
Some supported browsers may still produce a banner stating Your browser does not meet the minimum requirements for Canvas. If you have upgraded your browser, but you are still seeing the warning banner, try logging out of Canvas and clearing your browser's cache and cookies.
Enterprise Extended Release Browsers in Canvas
Chrome and Firefox offer extended release versions for organizations that manage client desktops. Chrome ESR can be kept up-to-date with the existing full version of Chrome at any time. However, Firefox ESR is only updated with every seventh major version, which causes Firefox ESR to overlap with outdated versions. The Firefox ESR webpage notes that ESR may not be supported in every web application because of this version release delay. Institutions who use Firefox ESR should consider deploying the latest release to ensure the best Canvas user experience.
* For extended release browser versions, the warning banner still applies and displays in Canvas for any browser below the minimum version requirement.
Known Browser Behaviors
Like all Instructure product features, contrary behaviors relating to browsers are prioritized by our product teams, and some behaviors in the previous version may not be resolved. If a behavior exists in the previous version of the browser that does not exist in the current version, the best solution is to update to the newest browser version.
The Safari browser does not support recording media.
Recording media in Studio or Canvas SpeedGrader is not supported in the Safari or Firefox browsers.
Accessibility
Instructure is committed to W3C's Web Accessibility Initiative. To learn about supported screen reader and browser combinations, please see the Canvas accessibility standards, accessibility within Studio, and Mastery Connect accessibility options documents.
JavaScript
JavaScript must be enabled to run Canvas.
Cookies
Cookies must be enabled. Additionally, some Canvas functionality requires third-party cookies to be enabled. You can learn how to enable third-party cookies.
Browser Plugins and Extensions
Some browser plugins or extensions may conflict with Instructure products and affect functionality. If you experience behavior that does not allow you to view or participate in Instructure products, please ensure you have disabled any extensions or plugins that interact directly with your web browser.
For troubleshooting, consider logging in to Instructure products using an incognito or private browser window, which provides a browser session without any prior browsing or search history, associated browser cookies, or other factors that may interfere with the browser. If you are able to view and participate in an Instructure product using an incognito or private browser window, the behavior you are experiencing is likely related to the browser and not the Instructure product.
Browser Privacy Settings
To ensure browser security, follow all browser security policies established by your institution, especially if you are using Instructure products on a computer provided by your institution.
When displaying content, Instructure products default to the preference set by a specific browser. Some browsers may occasionally make modifications to privacy settings to protect users from possible insecure content. Insecure content is identified with the prefix http:// in the URL and can create mixed content in your product page. Secured content is identified with the https:// prefix in the URL. For the best user experience, content should be secure to avoid browser conflicts.
- If you are a Canvas admin, insecure content may be caused by hosting an insecure JS/CSS file outside of Canvas. If custom uploads are supported for your account, you can host your file in the Canvas Theme Editor, which will resolve any browser conflicts.
- If you are a Canvas instructor who embeds Canvas lessons inside your course, you can prevent browser issues with mixed content using secured Canvas Guides URLs.
Known Browser Behaviors
Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari use HTML5 to display website content, promoting a faster, more secure browsing experience. For best performance in Instructure products, content should be designed to support HTML5.
In browsers such as Safari, insecure content never displays in the browser. However, in Chrome and Firefox, you may be able to view insecure content. Please be aware of possible restrictions and view insecure content with caution.
Chrome Security
Google Chrome verifies that the website content you view is transmitted securely. If you visit a page in your Instructure product that is linked to insecure content, Chrome displays a Not Secure security symbol in the browser address bar [1].
To select any needed permissions for a page, you can override security restrictions by clicking the Not Secure symbol and then clicking the Site settings link [2].
You can learn more about Chrome security.
Chrome Media Permissions
Chrome has its own media permission within the browser. To use your computer camera and microphone within any Instructure product feature, allow access to Instructure products via Chrome's media permission settings. This prompt appears just below the address bar [1]. To allow access, click the Allow button [2].
Firefox Security
Firefox verifies that the website content you view is transmitted securely. If you visit a page in your Instructure product that is linked to insecure content, Firefox displays a crossed-out lock icon in the browser address bar [1].
To enable any needed permissions for a page, you can override security restrictions by clicking the crossed-out lock icon, clicking the Connection not secure option [2], clicking the More Information link, and selecting the Permissions tab.
Computer Specifications
For best performance, access Instructure products with a computer that supports the most recent browser versions. It is recommended to use a computer five years old or newer with at least 1GB of RAM.
Operating System
Instructure products require an operating system that can run the latest compatible web browsers. Your computer operating system should be kept up to date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades.

Canvas supports the latest two versions of the most popular desktop browsers for Canvas. Many users also rely on mobile devices. Native Canvas apps support a limited set of features on mobile, but the apps don't cover all Canvas functionality.
Canvas engineering teams do not fully support mobile browsers for Canvas but will ensure that critical features and functions work for tablet devices (screen sizes 7.9" or higher used in landscape mode) running the most recent version of Safari (iOS) and Chrome (Android).
What is Limited Browser Support?
Canvas engineering will reactively address critical issues with core features that affect the most recent version of the native browser on iOS and Android tablet devices in landscape mode.
Key Terms
- Native browsers: Safari (iOS) and Chrome (Android)
- Reactive: Quality assurance teams test against each fully-supported browser before every Canvas release. For mobile browsers, Canvas responds to problems reported by Canvas users.
- Critical issue: An issue that makes an important feature or function unusable.
- Core feature: A feature needed for a key teaching and learning interaction.
- Most recent version: If theres a more recent version of the mobile browser and updating solves the problem, that solution will be suggested as the solution.
- Tablet devices: Devices with 7.9" or larger screens.
- Landscape mode: The device is held so the display is wider than its height.
How quickly will qualifying mobile-browser issues be fixed?
Canvas treats qualifying mobile browser issues as bugs. Engineering teams triage these bugs by severity and resolve them on the following schedule:
Severity | Description | Resolution Time |
---|---|---|
Level 1 | Users can’t access Canvas | Resources will be assigned immediately and will work uninterrupted until the problem is solved. |
Level 2 | Users can’t use a core feature; no workaround exists | Resources will be assigned within two hours and will work uninterrupted until the problem is solved. |
Level 3 | Users can’t use a core feature, but a workaround exists | Resources will be assigned within two business days and will develop and deploy a fix within two full release cycles. |
Level 4 | All other issues affecting only mobile browsers | Resources will review the problem within five business days, assessing impact, resource availability, and development priorities. A given problem may not be fixed when the impact is minor, when the affected workflow is seldom used, or when a workaround exists. |
Caveats—
Screen size and orientation
The Canvas web application is not fully responsive yet. Engineers are basing all new development on responsive-design best practices. This initiative will take some time to touch all parts of Canvas. In the meantime, Canvas will generally work better when viewed on a larger screen. Canvas teams may not choose to address issues that affect only devices with smaller screens or that affect larger-screen devices only when in portrait mode, even if they meet other criteria described above.
Big Blue Button conferencing
Screen-sharing in Canvas Conferences currently requires the Java plugin for desktop browsers. However, Big Blue Button (whose software powers Canvas Conferences) has created a mobile-friendly HTML5 version of their application for participants (primarily students). Other adjustments for additional user roles and features may be announced in future releases.
Partners and third-party tools
Many customers use third-party tools in Canvas, including LTI apps. Partner networks are encouraged to build tools that work well in mobile browsers, and any reported problems will be reported back to them. Some third-party tools will work better than others on mobile, and some may not work at all.
LearnPlatform has created this troubleshooting guide to help you navigate the most common issues when installing the LearnPlatform browser extension.
If you have not yet installed the LearnPlatform browser extension for educators and students, please see Installing the LearnPlatform browser extension.
When will I see data in my dashboard?
Once you’ve completed each step of the installation process, it may take up to two business days to verify your organization and domains and for data to flow into your Inventory Dashboard. If you would like to learn more about accessing and interpreting usage data, see Accessing and Understanding Usage Data.
I'm not seeing data in my dashboard
Common errors include:
- The extensions may have been pushed by error to the incorrect organizational units (OUs). Double check your installation steps to ensure that the right extensions have been installed for the right OUs (See Installing the LearnPlatform browser extension).
- You may have not forced installed the extension. The LearnPlatform for Educators extension should be Force installed to your Teacher/Educator group (organizational unit) and your LearnPlatform for Students extension should be Force installed to your Students group (organizational unit). If you have decided to Allow install the browser extensions (typically due to a district guideline) instead of Force install, make sure to promptly communicate this with your teachers. If end users choose not to install the extension, it will not collect data for those educator accounts. Kiosk mode does not run any forced installed G Suite extensions.
-
LearnPlatform may need your domains. Your organization's student and faculty/staff domains need to be included in our system for your usage to match your organization. If you have not done so already, send your faculty/staff domains to the LearnPlatform team via support-lp@instructure.com to be added.
- If you have pushed the extensions before sending LearnPlatform your domains, you will need to contact LearnPlatform via support-lp@instructure.com to have our team make the necessary corrections in the backend for your data to appear.
- Students and educators are NOT logged into their Google accounts while using the browser (e.g. via an incognito window). Make sure that students and educators are logged into their Google accounts when accessing a web-based edtech product. Only when educators and students are logged in to their Google accounts can we associate their usage data with your organization.
- Students and educators are NOT accessing products via Chrome as a web browser. The LearnPlatform browser extension will not capture any data from web-based edtech products that are accessed via non-Chrome browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari, and others. For Microsoft Edge please reach out to support-lp@instructure.com for instructions. The browser extensions also currently do not collect usage for non-web-based products and applications.
- Chrome Sync should be enabled for the extension to capture data.
The browser extension is not pulling data for a specific product
LearnPlatform tracks product usage from the domain of a web-based product. Our browser extension will not be tracking usage for a particular tool if that tool has a custom domain or if our system has a different domain from the one your organization is using to access that product. If you intend to track usage for a particular product, our support team may be able to include that domain for you (below).
LearnPlatform will not create products to track specific custom domains. For example, LearnPlatform will track the product Khan Academy and all sub domains from khanacademy.org, but will not create the product Khan Academy - Springfield School District to match the organization's custom/vanity domain.
To confirm that the browser extension is not pulling usage data from a product, visit the site for that product and check at the LearnPlatform browser extension to see if it is active or not. If the browser extension is not active, meaning that it is not pulling data from a page visit, it will be grayed out. The browser extension will light up if it is active and pulling data for that product site.
If you want to make sure that your LearnPlatform browser extension pulls data for a particular site, please send the following information to LearnPlatform via email at support-lp@instructure.com:
- Subject (optional): Add domain for a LearnCommunity Tool
- Product Name
- Product URL
Please allow for up to 48 business hours for the extension to pull data for that particular product.
I followed the installation instructions, but I still don’t see the extension?
Check your Google Admin Settings and make sure your organization is set to allow extensions under Chrome Management for Signed-In Users and that your syncing is turned on (Chrome Settings > Sync and Google services > Turn On).
I'm missing data for some schools within my district
This may be a case where 1) that particular school has chosen not to share data with the district or 2) our system needs an updated educator list for that school.
- When filtering your usage data by organization, you may encounter that a school includes not sharing data after their name as they have chosen not to disclose usage data with the district. In this case, the district will not be able to access the data for the school.
- If a select group of educators from a particular school does not show up in your usage dashboard, it may be that we need to manually update your educator list and associate these teachers with a particular school within your district. If you would like to update your teacher list, please contact us via email at support-lp@instructure.com asking for access to a SFTP folder for you to securely upload your updated teacher roster. Once you have access to an SFTP folder, please upload your file for processing. You can also automatically update your teacher and student rosters by connecting a OneRoster file to our platform. Speak with your LearnPlatform contact about this process.
Please keep in mind that updating educator lists could take up to 2 weeks to process.

What is the LearnPlatform browser extension?
Designed to give K-12 leaders insights into student edtech access, the LearnPlatform browser extension allows administrators to know what edtech products are being used in their organization. The extension collects information about domains associated with apps or sites in the LearnPlatform product library. The information collected via the browser extension is never used to identify any specific student; rather it provides data to help schools and districts understand and improve how technology supports teaching and learning.
The extension is not designed or intended for individual student use and should only be installed as part of a school or district initiative.
When the LearnPlatform browser extension is installed on a user's browser and that user visits a site that is included in our product library, the extension activates and captures information. The LearnPlatform icon changes from gray (inactive) to colored (active). When the extension is activated, general usage information is collected. This information can include a school-provided user ID, the time of day, and information about the domain and web site.
LearnPlatform is compliant with all federal and state student data privacy and confidentiality laws. Instructure is also a signatory of the Student Data Privacy Pledge. Access to reports, dashboards, and insights is secure and verified, and uses industry leading encryption and protection methods to defend against any malicious activities across the organization.
For more information about the privacy and security practices related to the browser extension and LearnPlatform, please visit our Privacy Center.
Reach out to support for the browser installation guide at support-lp@instructure.com
What is the difference between the Educator and the Student extension?
There are two LearnPlatform browser extensions; one for educators and another for students. These are simply used to identify whether the incoming usage data should be attributed to an educator or student user since the Inventory Dashboard can aggregate usage data based on user The user data collected and presented in the platform varies
The data collected by LearnPlatform browser extensions is gather only from edtech products found in the LearnPlatform community library. Data from products outside of the LearnPlatform Library is ignored.
How do I install the LearnPlatform browser extension?
Reach out to support for the browser installation guide at support-lp@instructure.com
How do I make sure my LearnPlatform browser extension is pulling data?
To ensure that your LearnPlatform browser extension is pulling data for all your students or educators, please make sure that:
- Students and educators are logged into their institution’s Google account while using the Chrome browser
- Students and educators are accessing products via Chrome as a browser
- Your organization's student and faculty/staff domains are included in our system for your usage to match your organization. If you have not done so already, send your faculty/staff domains to the LearnPlatform team via support-lp@instructure.com to be added.
- The browser extension is lit up, as opposed to greyed out, when accessing an educational product (below)
For additional information about troubleshooting your browser extensions see Troubleshooting my LearnPlatform browser extension.
What user data will be collected and transmitted by the LearnPlatform browser extensions?
For educators:
A GSuite identifier, typically an active email address (utilized only on the backend of the platform) and a notification of point of access for published edtech products. If an educator roster list is provided by the client, a name will also be visible in the Educator Usage Details table of the Inventory Dashboard.
If you have provided a roster, but you don’t want the names to be visible in the Inventory Dashboard, navigate to Settings > Account Settings > Access Controls > Educator Usage Details > select ‘Yes’. This can be especially useful when you want to share the dashboard with external partners, but don’t want to provide them to view educator names.
For students:
A GSuite identifier, typically an active email address (utilized only on the backend of the platform) and a notification of point of access for published edtech products. All student data is aggregated at the school or district level and is not currently available by name, class, course, etc.
No PII is shared in the Inventory Dashboard.
Is the data collected for Educators, Staff or Students?
The customer decides which organizational units (OUs) are connected to the browser extensions. The Extensions can be installed for educators and/or staff (using the educator extension) or students (using the student extension).
Is data transmitted from the customer to LearnPlatform?
Data is transmitted through organization-level GSuite educators/students who are authenticated with their credentials and are utilizing a Chrome browser on any non-mobile device.
Is the data stored by LearnPlatform?
Please refer to our data sharing agreement (attached).
How is the data used?
Please refer to our data sharing agreement (attached).
What is the recommended OU structure for installing the extension to only one group (students or teachers)?
✅ The approach below facilitates the deployment of an extension to the highlighted yellow OU, enabling all teachers at all schools to get it, but no students.
- Educators
- District 1
- School A
- School B
- School C
- District 1
- Students
- District 1
- School A
- School B
- School C
- District 1
The reverse applies to students.
❌ The approach below makes it harder to deploy the extension since you cannot use a single OU but instead must select them individually.
- District 1
- School A
- Educators
- Students
- School B
- Educators
- Students
- School C
- Educators
- Students
- School A
Our recommendation is to group only the teachers/students into a hierarchy of only teachers/students and the remaining group into a separate hierarchy so that you can pick the highest OU to target the most users of a specific group.
Hi community
I am using Parent mobile app, but the app doesn't have enough function
So I have to log in to the browser on my phone.
Instead of showing our Canvas LMS, It turns on my Parent mobile app
I have to use Canvas mostly on my phone. So is there any way to avoid that?

iOS

- Internet

*De Android-standaardbrowser varieert per mobiel apparaat.
You can access Canvas from any browser on your Android device. However, for the best user experience, you should view Canvas via the mobile app for Android devices.
Please note that mobile browsers are not supported by Canvas, and features may not function as expected compared to viewing Canvas in a fully supported desktop browser. Canvas pages within a mobile browser are only supported when an action in the app links directly to the browser, such as when a student takes certain types of quizzes. Support is not extended to pages that cannot currently be used in the app, such as Conferences or Collaborations.
Additionally, Canvas offers limited support for native mobile browsers on tablet devices. For details, please reference the limited-support mobile browser guidelines.
The images in this lesson are shown for a phone display, but unless otherwise noted, tablet displays mirror the same steps.
