Canvas Network News: School's Out

Blog Post created by Employee on May 28, 2015

What do The Bowery Boys, Alice Cooper and Canvas Network have in common?

Schools-out.jpgIn the 1930's and '40's, the term "school's out" was tough-guy slang meaning to smarten-up, or get wise. At Canvas Network, we're all about the wising-up.

It has been documented that Alice Cooper picked up the term "school's out" from a movie called "Angels in Disguise" (1949). Since it's release in 1972,  Alice Cooper's song "School's Out" has been chanted or sung by students, teachers and parents at this time of year all around the world.

With a little digging (thank you, Wikipedians), one might learn that the famously comedic street tough characters, The Bowery Boys who starred in "Angels in Disguise", were entrepreneurs that often ran (somewhat) legitimate businesses and helped solve neighborhood crimes.

Speaking of solving crimes, we're doing that this summer on Canvas Network. Ball State University has partnered with Turner Classic Movies (TCM) to offer a free online course called "Investigating Film Noir". This is one of dozens of courses available on a variety of topics for you rockers, tough guys, wise guys, and film buffs.

If you prefer Ephraim Goodweather over Phillip Marlowe, check out "Fight or Die: The Science Behind FX's The Strain" wherein UC Irvine's super-nerds turn super-sleuths to explain parasitic invasions and how to thwart cyber attacks.

So, when you start singing "Schools Out", remember that learning never ends. See how much you learned just reading this blog post?
