Introducing the Gauge AMS

JUL 26, 2017

By Instructure

SALT LAKE CITY — July 26, 2017 — Instructure (NYSE:INST), a leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) technology company and creator of the Canvas learning management system (LMS), today announced the release of Gauge, a comprehensive assessment management system (AMS) that empowers K–12 school districts to regularly measure student learning with more insight and more timely results. This world-class assessment product will benefit teachers and students in schools across the nation.

“Gauge is our easy-to-use, scalable assessment platform that enables schools to create effective formative, interim and benchmark exams, deliver them to individuals or groups of students and use the data collected to directly influence instruction,” said Mitch Benson, vice president of product for Canvas by Instructure. “Simply put, Gauge provides schools with a simple, easy-to-use assessment experience that delivers actionable data to drive student outcomes and success.”

To highlight the importance of assessment, Instructure commissioned a national study about assessment testing and learning tools (see below). Results reveal that teachers are not getting what they need from their assessment data. The study found that if teachers received better, more actionable data faster, they would take steps to improve teaching.

According to the survey, only 50 percent of respondents receive individual student performance data from their current AMS. Of all the types of data, teachers said access to this individual student performance data would be most helpful. Teachers also wish they received results more quickly. If they had access to their data sooner, 60 percent of teachers would individualize student learning plans, 58 percent would intervene with targeted instruction for struggling students and 43 percent would make changes to the curriculum.

Gauge product features include:

  • Scalability: Educators can create and deploy district-wide assessments for students across the district, within a grade level or at a particular campus.
  • Ease of Use: From the very beginning, Gauge was designed with end-users in mind, so its real power comes from its simplicity. Gauge’s interface is clean, intuitive and easy to navigate. This minimizes user frustration, reduces support costs, and ultimately, lets users focus on what’s truly important — teaching and learning.
  • In-depth Reporting: Administrators and teachers can view meaningful reports and take action to improve instruction and student achievement.
  • Data Analysis: User profiles set up by data from the student information system allow teachers and administrators to identify and assist at-risk populations, and recognize and repeat successes. Robust item analysis and quiz statistics help educators understand the performance and reliability of their assessments. Teachers can align test items to learning outcomes and capture student performance question by question.
  • Mobile Availability: Gauge works on any device, any time. Students can sit for an assessment using a mobile device or personal computer/laptop.
  • Security: Tests are secure through IP address filtering, availability settings, password protection, SSL encryption and other industry standard security processes.
  • Standards-based Technology: Gauge is compliant with IMS Global Learning Consortium standards LTI and QTI.

Gauge is a full-featured and fully integrated solution accompanying the LMS to drive adoption, decrease costs and positively affect learning. This assessment product gives educators simple and effective tools to improve instruction through fast and useful data.

“As a district with more than 250,000 students, we now have a district-wide assessment platform, Gauge, that works seamlessly with the Canvas product our teachers and students are already familiar with,” said Richard Baum, director of student assessment and research for Broward County Public Schools.

  K-12

It is officially back to school season! Below is a white paper handout that will help you tackle common Canvas issues that arise before school starts!

1) DATA ISSUES

When troubleshooting SIS issues in Canvas a few important pieces of information (data) to inspect are:

Refer to the attached PDF but if outside of those perimeters check the following:

  • Was the Information contained in the SIS file sent over and in the proper format?
  • Was the Information not manually deleted in Canvas (changes in Canvas are known as "sticky" and will override future imports into Canvas)? FYI -You can find deleted objects by running a provisioning report and selecting the box "include deleted objects"
  • Does the item you are looking to update have an SIS ID attached in Canvas and SIS file.

2) COURSE ACCESS ISSUES

When troubleshooting user's being able to access courses or course content (active or concluded):

Is it an Access Date Issue?

How do Term Dates, Course Dates, and Section Dates work in Canvas?

Has the course (or content) been Published or Unpublished?

Note that a course cannot be unpublished if there are any graded assignments in the course. The

course cannot be accessed by students unless it has been published. Any materials

in the course must be published to be viewable by the students enrolled in the course.

Has the course been concluded?

         Viewing Concluded Courses, Enrollments

How to Unconclude a Course (Note, this can be done if the instructor has the

permissions to do so, admins should be able to do this for any user under their account admin

          access)

Deleting Courses from the account (Admins only)

How to Customize the Course List as an Instructor- This shows teachers how to

remove old or not immediately relevant courses from their view.

Is it a Cross-Listing Issue?

For additional information about cross-listing, please refer to this video

3) AUTHENTICATION ISSUES

(You should submit a Support Ticket whenever you suspect an Authentication issue may exist.)

Have you Whitelisted all the Canvas URLs and IP addresses (for LDAP)?

If you are not sure, please contact your CSM to get the comprehensive list

Are you using the right Port (for LDAP)?

If you are using LDAP and are running on a secure port, you will typically house your SSL certificate on port 636. If you are running on an insecure port with a SSL certificate running in the background, you should use port 389

Have you recently reset your Server, Passwords, Updated Firewall, or reset the local network?

Are all your users having an issue logging in or is it just certain users or certain buildings? If so, it is most likely not a Canvas issue. Get in contact with your

network administrator

4) SUPPORT ISSUES

(How do I best utilize Canvas Support?  What is the difference between Canvas Support and my CSM?)

JUN 27, 2017

By Scott Townsend

Doing Things Differently to Drive Student Success

One of the things I love most about my job at Instructure is meeting customers. In recent meetings, I’ve noticed that student success is a recurring theme—among teachers, administrators, technologists, managers and even students themselves. Many of our customers talk about how they’ve embraced edtech with this objective firmly in mind, and how Canvas provides an engaging learning experience that drives better outcomes.

What does success look like?

Student success doesn’t have a one-size-fits-all definition; it means different things to different people. For some, it’s a short-term objective aimed at helping students pass modules or courses. For others, it’s a long-game focused on preparing graduates for successful employment.

Michael Welin-Berger, project manager for Canvas implementation from Stockholm’s Royal Institute of Technology told us that, for him, student success relies upon “the student reaching his/her full potential, both in theoretical as well as social skills.”

Elizabeth McConnell, a student from the Academy of Interactive Entertainment (AIE) in Sydney, said, “My definition of student success is getting what you want from uni and being able to apply that in a rewarding job.”

While we agree with Welin-Berger’s holistic view that student success ultimately comes from delivering rounded, practical and well-adjusted graduates, we also agree with McConnell that students should graduate with skills for the workforce—and for a fulfilling role in society.

Motivation and engagement

Motivation and engagement are crucial to student success—and both are driven by empowerment. The best educators, as much as possible, empower students to engage deeply with course materials and to learn in ways that suit them best. Many forward-looking institutions now prioritise a collaborative environment where teachers act more as coaches. This self-directed approach helps increase motivation and engagement by encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning. It also puts the focus on thinking critically and applying knowledge, which is a significant pedagogical shift from theoretical and rote learning.

The ability to solve real-world problems and to hone independent thinking is important at all stages of learning, but when it comes to finding employment and thriving in the workforce, these skills are critical. Indeed, a skills-focused learning approach affects our entire employment ecosystem—from individuals’ careers to the prosperity of businesses, industries and economies.

The learning journey

This is where Canvas comes in. By harnessing the power of technology, educators can begin to deliver a more engaging and motivating educational experience. Tech can power a collaborative, self-directed learning environment where students develop new skills, apply knowledge, get better feedback and even establish links with industry.

And, of course, tech isn’t just valuable in an academic setting—it goes beyond the classroom. From connecting with prospective students and parents to supporting postgraduates and alumni after studies end, tech enables institutions to create and maintain engagement. When harnessed properly, educational technology can help facilitate a truly rounded experience—one that meets many definitions of students success.

To learn more about how Canvas can help define success at your institution, join us at one of our upcoming CanvasCon events in Australia or the UK.

Keep Learning,

Scott Townsend

VP of International Marketing, Instructure

Canvassador of the Month: June 2017

Carrie Sanguientti

Carrie has worked for Katy ISD for 13 years. Currently, she holds a position as a Classroom Technology Designer supporting K-12 campuses district-wide with the Canvas LMS and also enjoys managing the Canvas Teacher Leader program. She is a co-designer of the Online Instructor Certification course built in Canvas and approved through the Texas Virtual Schools Network and the Texas Education Agency. Carrie is a veteran teacher in the Katy Virtual School and continues to teach Professional Communications to high school students in the online environment via Canvas. She feels that her unique perspective as a teacher, trainer and parent observer in Canvas allows her a well-rounded experience with the LMS to be an empathetic support system to others in those roles.

Q & A

  • Why did you decide to go into education? I love learning. If I can provide an engaging experience for others, perhaps I can help them become lifetime learners too. Truth be told....working in education is fun!

  • If you could take a road trip with someone alive or dead, who would it be? Well, I mentally searched the entire history of the world and I honestly couldn't think of anyone I would rather road trip with more than my husband, Fredy! We have great adventures together and traveling is one of our favorite hobbies. He is the Thelma to my Louise....in a manly, non-suicidal and totally legal sort of way.

How has Canvas made a difference in your career? Canvas has become the foundation for my career. I was hooked from my first Canvas course! I love that I can learn something new in Canvas every single day. I love the extension of the classroom that I can provide to the students in our district by using this amazing tool. Most of all, I love when I share Canvas with colleagues and they get as excited as I am about what this can do for learning. From the elementary and secondary classrooms to professional development for our staff, Canvas adds excitement, energy and next-level benefits for our users.

We will explore 40+ Hitchcock films from his first film in the silent era, The Lodger (1927) to his final film five decades later, Family Plot (1977). In all, the course will reflect on Hitchcock's unparalleled 50-year career as one of cinema's most successful and unique filmmakers.

Both the course and the associated films are designed to enrich your understanding of Alfred Hitchcock, Hollywood filmmaking, and the shifts in popular culture and film production contexts that Hitchcock used to his advantage throughout his illustrious career. You will be able to share your own thoughts about Hitchcock and cinema history with a worldwide community of students, fans, and film lovers.

  Canvas Network

Back to top.png

Last March the Canvas Network Team reiterated our commitment to moving from being a passive promoter to an active promoter of openness in education. We set some challenging goals and are pleased to announce we not only met these goals, we exceeded them!

The results are in. Over 80% of courses have publicly visible URL’s and 300 courses and learning objects have been shared to Canvas Commons. The number of Creative Commons licenses for courses that listed or started between March 1, 2016 and March 1, 2017 also increased to 61%.

This could not have been done without your support. Thank you.

Planet eStream is trusted by more than 1,800 organizations globally as a powerful browser-based platform with great end-to-end workflow for video on demand, live streaming, and digital signage.

Planet eStream enables organizations to create, brand, theme, and manage their own secure media archive and to distribute and share that content on demand via their LMS, websites, PCs, mobile devices, and digital signage displays. The platform also offers live video streaming, lecture and lesson capture, Freeview TV Recording and IPTV (for UK clients only), online editing, and a fully featured digital signage interface.

Happy November Canvas K-12ers! Something that usually comes up at this time of year is how to leverage Canvas in the Elementary School classroom. The use of an LMS at the high school and middle school level seems pretty intuitive for many Canvas admins, but when you start talking about elementary students who are beginning readers, it gives them pause.

Well admins, we hear you and want to help by showing you just what you can do with Canvas as a tool in your ELED classes!  A good place to start is with our 10 Things Your Kids Can Learn Online eLearning Infographic. Once you’ve finished that,  check out some of our favorite resources about Canvas in the ELED classroom. You can also join our CanvasLive Twitter Chats on Tuesday evenings, which are completely focused on Canvas & ELED. #Canvas4elem

New Partners:

In October we gained some great new partners who contribute unique and exciting tools to the ever growing learning tools ecosystem. Check out Honor Lock, CapSim, Triumph Learning, Zoomi, and Bocavox to see the latest integrations.

Partner Spotlight:

vocareumspotlight.png

Vocareum has developed a cloud platform built specifically for coding classes. The Vocareum products are accessible as LTI-compliant apps within Canvas. They offer two products built on top of their cloud platform—codeLMS and cloudLabs. Their platform capabilities range from enabling coding quizzes, assignments, projects, and exams on the cloud, to delivering the ability to execute and assess the code created by students.

The main components of our cloud platform are:

  • Assignment Management
  • Grading Automation
  • Plagiarism Detection
  • Learning Analytics
  • Cloud IDE
  • Exams-as-a-Service

codeLMS is an LMS built specifically to address the needs of coding classes. Unlike horizontal LMS offerings, Vocareum delivers coding-specific capabilities like grading automation, plagiarism detection, and learning analytics that are missing in horizontal LMS offerings.

cloudLabs provides access to cloud computer labs to browsers. Students do not need to install any software to work on their coding projects. This capability is particularly useful for online classes where students may not have access to either physical labs, IT support, or if they work on a variety of devices including tablets or chromebooks.

You can learn more about their platform by SIGNING UP to attend any of their weekly product demos, every Wednesday at 10:00 Pacific.

Press Release: Canvas Creates Industry's First Mobile Annotation Capability for Best-in-Class Learning Management

This new annotation feature allows work to be completed inside Canvas, reducing a 20+ step process to three steps. As schools become increasingly digital, teachers and students are often faced with many disparate online tools that can force convoluted, confusing processes for downloading and uploading. Providing students with the ability to annotate documents directly inside Canvas eliminates the need for a separate app, which in turn removes the cost for another digital annotation tool.

  Canvas Network

Back to top.png

It’s true, September is one of the busiest months for MOOC providers. We started the month with a bang here at Canvas Network by launching both an edutainment course and a Girls in STEM series.

Ball State University (BSU) and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) partner once again to offer TCM Presents Painfully Funny: Exploring Slapstick in the Movies. This new course, running concurrently with TCM’s “OUCH! A Salute to Slapstick,” successfully entertains and educates by combining academic rigor, innovative technology, and classic movies. Follow along on Twitter at #SlapstickFall.

Canvas Network also partnered with several institutions to bring you a Girls in STEM series.

This free online course series issues a call to action for educators, students, and parents to prioritize STEM education for girls in elementary, middle, and high school grades, as well as higher education. The series aims to provide a community for both girls and boys throughout the world to engage in STEM-related courses.

2016-2_Girls_in_STEM_final.png

The Girls in STEM series consists of six courses of various lengths, including:

  • He Named Me Malala: Inspiring Girls in STEM, offered by Journeys in Film. This course teaches high school teens about Malala Yousafzai, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and advocate of science and girls’ education. The course will examine her story as told through the award-winning, critically acclaimed film He Named Me Malala. Students will learn how they can follow her example by using their own passions to make a difference in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, education, and more.

  • Think Like a Scientist, offered by Real Science Labs. This four-week online course investigates the scientific method and helps students master lab safety procedures, learn basic microscopy, and understand the importance of measurement in scientific fields. Each lesson comes to life through real experiments and exercises that allow the students to become scientists.

  • Supporting Girls in STEAM, offered by Community Bridge Video. This short introductory course for parents and teachers covers ways in which adult allies can support young women interested in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics (STEAM) fields. Participants will learn strategies for inspiring girls, how to challenge their own gender biases, and how internet access can both help and challenge young women.

  • Zappar-Powered STEM Learning Using Augmented Reality, offered by Zappar. This course, designed for third to fifth graders, teaches students all about the water cycle—a key STEM topic—and teaches them how to produce their own augmented reality (AR) poster based on the subject. Students can then apply this knowledge and AR wizardry to their future coursework and other STEM fields.

  • Think Like a CSI, offered by Real Science Labs. This four-week online course for high schoolers will allow them to investigate forensics materials including crime scenes, fingerprinting and impression evidence. Each forensics lesson will come to life through real experiments and exercises that allow students to fully explore the fascinating world of forensic scientists.

  • Think Like a Physicist, offered by Real Science Labs. This course for high schoolers helps them explore the many facets of physics. Students will get hands-on experience with the subject by performing their own real experiments and projects.

The first of these courses was released on Monday, September 12, 2016, with others following weekly. To learn more or enroll in the Girls in STEM courses, please visit http://stem.canvas.net.

With the 16/17 school year upon us, many Canvas admins look at their previous year’s adoption rate and usage in order to reflect and continue on the path of their Canvas rollout plan.
