Events

CanvasCon is going global. On Thursday, May 19, 2016 we’ll be at the University College of Northern Denmark in—you guessed it—Denmark. The day-long event will feature a variety of sessions from educators demonstrating how technology can help enable better student-teacher interaction; deliver personalized learning; and facilitate more opportunities for feedback, discussion, and collaboration.

City University of Hong Kong & Canvas—Modern Technology for the Modern Classroom

Watch our new video to learn why City University of Hong Kong chose Canvas. Students at City U say Canvas enables them to concentrate on their studies instead of wasting time on a complicated LMS tutorial.

Canvassador Highlights

A big round of applause for this month’s featured Canvassador, Lisa Castro, Director of Staff Development and Curriculum at Allen ISD in Allen, Texas.

Lisa gave a presentation on blended learning to a standing-room-only crowd at the Canvas booth at TCEA. She’s always looking for opportunities to give feedback and answer questions in the Canvas Community and on her social accounts. She has also helped coordinate Canvas user events in her home state of Texas.

Research & Education

Hey data lovers, we just released two Canvas Network datasets. They contain over a year's worth of de-identified data from Canvas Network open courses. Both datasets are available here at the Harvard Dataverse.

The first set is open to all, but the second set is more restricted. The restricted set requires you to answer some questions first before we grant you access. Go wild!

Canvas Network

Canvas Network is a powerful DIY tool that allows you to get involved in the open education movement. In March, we publicly recommitted Canvas Network to pursuing our primary mission—promoting openness, innovation, and experimentation in education. Read our blog post, Canvas Network: Committed to Open Education, to learn more about our goals for increasing openness.

Canvas Network is and always has been open. We’re excited to see how much MORE open we can get. Tag #OpenEducation and @canvasnet on Twitter, or email the Canvas Network team at courses@canvas.net if you’d like to get involved.

Coming Soon: Week in Review

In December, our K-12 and Higher Ed Priority Service teams will launch Week in Review updates within the Canvas Community. In contrast to Canvas Connection (what you’re reading right now), which provides a monthly overview of all things Canvas, the Week in Review will drill down into the daily life of a Canvas Admin. So, you can get timely updates about webinars, new LTI tools, or other bite-sized bits of info to help you save the day.

What We’re Grateful for this Thanksgiving:

    • New features and bug fixes, like Conferences, differentiated assignments, and Grades Summary, just to name a few
    • The new Canvas Community where we can all learn and connect
    • The recent announcement about the new location for InstructureCon 2016
    • YOU! So many schools have expanded their use of Canvas this year, and we’re grateful to be part of all you do

  K-12

Back to top.png

This month, our Canvas K-12 team is thankful for great Canvas Admins doing awesome things to make a difference in the lives of teachers and students. For example:

    • Jeff Faust (Charlottesville, VA) developed teacher spotlight reports to give school admins a tool to help with change of practice. Spotlight reports enable sub-account admins to query a teacher and to look at student activity in specific courses during a specific timeframe. This data is being used in teacher observation and in conferences between teachers and administrators.
    • Forney ISD created a video featuring CLiCK, their “spokesbot.” And check out this bonus video from Forney geared toward parents. Promotional videos like these have been a key component in many districts’ successful marketing efforts.

Also, take a few minutes to learn more about these awesome Canvas tools that can help make your Canvas experience even more awesome.

    • As the name of the service more than suggests, Canvas Data provides data about your Canvas instance. Read the blog for more info about why we provide daily Canvas Data files for free.
    • Canvas Catalog enables better facilitation of enrollments, management, and payment for professional development, summer school, and credit recovery courses. For more info visit the Canvas Catalog website.

badgr.png

Badgr, a Canvas Premier partner, is an Open Badges issuing system that integrates with Canvas to automatically issue badges within courses. An open-source project of Concentric Sky, Badgr offers easy badge configuration for instructors and effortless badge management for students.

Open Badges are fully portable, allowing badge earners to combine badges they’ve earned in Canvas with those from other programs to tell a more complete story of their achievements—both online and off.

When instructors use Badgr to automatically issue badges in Canvas, they can:

      • Define badges for any achievement that can be assessed within a course.
      • Easily attach badges to course modules.
      • Watch as students complete course modules and earn badges.
      • View students’ progress across the available badges for the course.

When students earn Open Badges within a Canvas course, they can:

      • Keep track of the badges they’ve earned in the course, as well as the ones they still have left to earn.
      • Get instant access to their badges without needing to create an account on an external service.
      • Earn a badge once and manage it anywhere Open Badges are used.
      • Easily share badges to LinkedIn or Facebook or save them to their favorite badge management application.

In August, we added some great new learning tools to our ever-growing educational ecosystem. Some of our newest partners include Badgr, Blended Schools Network, Essay Assay, Planet estream, and Vocareum

Visit the EduAppCenter and the Canvas Partner Portal to discover learning tools that integrate with Canvas.

Partner Spotlights

vocareumspotlight.png

Vocareum, our newest Certified partner, has developed a cloud platform built specifically for coding classes. Vocareum products are accessible as LTI-compliant apps within Canvas. They offer two products, codeLMS and cloudLabs, built on top of their cloud platform. Platform capabilities range from enabling course content on the cloud, to delivering the ability to execute and assess the code created by students through assignments, exams, and projects. The main platforms components include:

      • Assignment Management
      • Grading Automation
      • Plagiarism Detection
      • Learning Analytics
      • Cloud IDE
      • Exams-as-a-Service

codeLMS is an LMS built specifically to address the needs of coding classes. Unlike horizontal LMS offerings, Vocareum delivers coding-specific capabilities like grading automation, plagiarism detection, and learning analytics that are missing in horizontal LMS offerings.

cloudLabs provides access to cloud computer labs to browsers. Students do not need to install any software to work on their coding projects. This capability is particularly useful for online classes where students may not have access to either physical labs or IT support and if they work on a variety of devices including tablets or Chromebooks.

Vocareum has been used by approximately 3,500 students in coding classes at leading universities such as UCSD, Penn State, UIUC, and USC. Learn more by signing up to attend any of Vocareum’s weekly product demos every Wednesday at 10 a.m. PT.

Coming to Terms With the End of the Term

Whew! You’ve successfully made it to the end of another term. And now, whether you’re teaching through the summer or getting ready to dust off your flip flops and recharge with some R&R before fall, here are some of our best end-of-term tips and tricks.

For Instructors

      • Download any student work you’d like to keep as examples (both good and not-so-good).
      • Clear out any assignments, content pages, discussions, or quizzes/surveys you didn’t find useful (or that you now consider junk). That way, you can avoid copying unwanted content into future courses.
      • Consider exporting your grades to CSV files (depending on your final grading system).
      • Share your course to Commons (if you have Commons turned on), so it’s easy to import course content for next term.
      • Have a great summer teaching, beaching, or doing whatever you plan to do.

InstructureCon 2015

In just a matter of days, we’ll be gathering in the mountains of Park City, Utah, for our fifth annual user conference. As this year’s theme, “Student-Centered Learning: The Musical,” more than suggests, it’s all about rocking, rolling, rumbling, and rallying around student-centered learning. Visit the InstructureCon 2015 conference site for answers to last-minute questions about workshops, sessions, lodging, transportation, or any of that jazz.

And, as always, watch for us at events throughout the country this spring.

Canvas News Highlights

We were in the news a lot this month. Here are the highlights.

      • The Strain MOOC - IMDb.com wrote about the edutainment MOOC being launched by Instructure in partnership with FX Networks and UC Irvine. This MOOC was also mentioned in Variety Magazine, WIRED, The Chronicle of Higher Education, University Business, Education Dive, and Campus Technology News.
      • The Educator Magazine - Australia’s only magazine and news website for senior educational professionals posted a story about how Canvas is a great new platform for higher ed and K-12 schools in Australia.
      • Best Practices Network - In case you missed it, Instructure announced that the Best Practice Network in the UK chose Canvas VLE and Canvas Catalog.

Keep Learning Blog

In June, the Keep Learning blog will be exploring the question: Where does learning happen? Ideas about unschooling, DIY education, autodidacts, and student-centered, personalized, and autonomous learning strategies have relocated learning outside the walls of the school, campus, and university. As InstructureCon opens with a theme of student-centered learning, so will the Keep Learning community begin to ask what it means when learning changes hands, shifts locations, and disrupts us

InstructureCon Unconference

This year, InstructureCon is hosting its first unconference. On Tuesday, June 16, anyone who is registered for the main conference, but not attending a pre-conference workshop, is welcome to join the full-day unconference. This is an opportunity for educators to team up and discuss teaching practices, learning methods, and to form new networks around new ideas. The unconference theme is Student-Centered Learning and Educational Technology. Seats are filling fast, so visit the unconference Canvas course today to learn more and to sign up while you still can.

New Canvas Integrations in the App Center

In May, we added three integrations to EduAppCenter.com for cool new solutions.

Official Canvas Partnerships

In May, we were happy to welcome Unplag to our Certified Partner tier and Gooru to our Premier Partner tier. https://www.eduappcenter.com/apps/339#.VV4YARPF8vF

      • Unplag - Launched in 2014, the Unplag team keeps developing existing features and creating new ones based on feedback from its clients. Unplag has been primarily created for educational establishments to simplify their document workflow and to spot duplications in students’ papers. Being constantly upgraded, Unplug, a similarity detection engine, has a wide list of features to offer.
      • Gooru - Personalization is everywhere. Apps and sites like Netflix, Pandora, and Amazon draw from a huge catalog of options as well as user data to recommend personalized movies, songs, and other items. But learning is complex, and teachers and students aren’t consumers of education—they’re creators. Our task as “ed-technologists” is to innovate collaboratively with the community of educators and students to support the ways they teach and learn. Gooru supports students, teachers, schools, districts, developers, partners, and other audiences who are honoring the human right to education.

Wrapping Up The School Year in Canvas

Congratulations! You’ve almost made it to the end of another school year. Are you ready to pack up your classroom for the summer and to begin preparing for next year? You may be asking yourself, “What do I do with Canvas now that the school year is over?” For answers, check out this CanvasLIVE session by Cortny Lyon.

Gamify Your Courses With Canvabadges

As you start preparing for next year, think about using Canvabadges to gamify your courses and to motivate students. You can award badges based on completion of modules or final grades. Compatible with Mozilla OpenBadges, Canvabadges are added as module items in Canvas, and must be configured by the instructor before students can earn them. Additionally, you can add a manual approval step that requires instructor sign-off before badges are awarded.

The InstructureCon Unconference

On Tuesday, June 16, 2015 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., InstructureCon will hold its very first unconference (InstCon UnCon). An unconference is a place where participants decide the curriculum for the day, network with other conference attendees, and share ideas spontaneously, spur-of-the-moment, and off-the-cuff.

Who Should Attend the Unconference?

      • Anyone registered for InstructureCon 2015. Unconferences are usually free, so anyone who wants to arrive early for the main conference is welcome.
      • Anyone who sometimes finds themselves thinking “I wish they had covered X,Y, Z more deeply” in regular conference sessions, and wishes they had the chance to ask further questions or expand on that content themselves.
      • Anyone who wants to engage more deeply in the conversations that are sure to abound at InstructureCon 2015.
      • Anyone who likes interacting with colleagues to expand on ideas, share techniques and models, and debate current trends.

This event is open and free of charge to all InstructureCon attendees. To participate, simply enroll in the InstCon UnCon Canvas course and plan to attend in person on June 16. You’ll find all the information you need right in the Canvas course. So, join the InstructureCon Unconference today and let’s get focused on student-centered learning.
