Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day In History: Pierre Renoir

image (10).png

On February 25, 1841, Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in the south-western city of Limoges, France and is known for his paintings using the Impressionist based style. Renoir first began studying art in 1862 and met artists such as Monet and Sisley; however, he did not begin to gain notoriety until ten years later during the Franco-Prussian War.

"Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated color, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions."

Later in his life, he developed arthritis which required him to adapt his painting style and technique. After World War 1, he visited the Louvre, where he was able to see his paintings. In 1990, his painting, Bal au Moulin de la Galette sold for $78 million.

WEEK OF 2016-02-19

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

image (9).png

On February 19, 1473, Nicolaus Copernicus was born in the central Polish city of Torun. Copernicus has been given the title of “Father of Modern Astronomy." He was the first modern European scientist to propose that the Earth revolved around the sun as well as the other planets.

Copernicus was raised in a wealthy merchant family and education was a large part of his life. He moved to Bologna, Italy to study at the university. During his time in Bologna he lived in the home of Domencio Novara, who was designated to issue astrological forecasts for the city. Copernicus assisted Novara with these astrological forecasts. He was exposed to astrology as well as “aspects of the Ptolemaic system, which placed Earth at the center of the universe.”

Through his life, he completed his “Six Books Concerning the Revolutions of the Heavenly Orbs.” Such ideas range from the earth rotating on its axis to the elliptical patterns of the planets revolving around the sun. By the 18th century, this information was widely accepted.

WEEK OF 2016-02-12

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

image (8).png

On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster Prison. This was a momentous day in history because it changed world politics.

Mandela was a strong political advocate for equal rights in his home country of South Africa and throughout the world. The South African government from 1948-1994 implemented Apartheid, meaning racial segregation of citizens by state authority, which restricted rights of non-whites and barred them from government offices.

During his education at the University of Witwatersrand, Mandela became involved in a movement against the Apartheid. To further his cause, in 1952, he opened the first South African black law-firm, which offered free or low-cost legal counsel to people affected by the Apartheid.

Mandela was imprisoned multiple times throughout his life based on his attacks against the South African government. He was imprisoned from 1962-1990. Many nations and many influential political leaders protested his imprisonment. Some of these leaders protesting the South African Apartheid government included President George Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and French President Francois Mitterrand.

South Africa held general elections on April 27, 1994, and Mandela was elected President due to his vision for equality. He presided over a government who transitioned from an Apartheid minority rule government to a multicultural democracy.

WEEK OF 2016-02-05

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

image (7).png

This day in history, Henry "Hank" Aaron, nicknamed the Hammer or Hammerin Hank, was born on February 5, 1934.

Hank Aaron is a retired Major League Baseball right fielder. He was best known for playing with the Milwaukee Brewers/Atlanta Braves as well as beating Babe Ruth’s home run streak by hitting his 755th and final home run on July 20,1976.

Throughout his life,  Hank faced racial bigotry with a calm and professional demeanor. Sports Illustrated noted Hank’s attitude by writing:

"Is this to be the year in which Aaron, at the age of thirty-nine, takes a moon walk above one of the most hallowed individual records in American sport...? Or will it be remembered as the season in which Aaron, the most dignified of athletes, was besieged with hate mail and trapped by the cobwebs and goblins that lurk in baseball's attic?"

On January 8, 2001, Hank was awarded with the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Clinton. He subsequently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President George W. Bush in June 2002.

Canvas Commons: Black History Month

February is dedicated to a month-long learning about the African American icons, leaders, activists, and inventors who have made significant impacts on American history. And what better way to integrate these topics into Canvas courses than importing just-in-time resources from Commons public.
