This Day in History: Patrick Henry- “Give me liberty, or give me death.”

Give me liberty or death.png

On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, a politician later appointed to be the Governor of Virginia, coined the famous term, "Give me liberty, or give me death." On that day, Henry was rallying troops to fight against British oppression.

There were many events leading up to this particular day. France and Great Britain began to vie for power over the Western European exploration of North and South America. These two powers went to war for domination between 1754-1763, which resulted in the French and Indian War.

The French and Indian war was very costly for the British. Due to this, the British began to heavily tax the colonists. The first real oppression to British taxation began in 1765 when the Stamp Act was passed. Many colonists accepted these various taxes until the Tea Act in 1773, when oppression to British rule became more widely accepted.

On the day Henry gave his famous speech, he was addressing the Virginia Convention about living under such conditions. Henry said that he considered the subject a matter of choice between living in freedom or suffering as slaves. Henry said, "Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings."

Here at Instructure, we want our service to not only be a differentiator, but also to provide unique value.  With the recent release of Canvas Data, we're able to offer you, our client partners, additional insight into your institution's Canvas usage. To enable that, we've created a new service we're calling the Executive Business Review (EBR). EBRs will be delivered by your CSM free of charge. They'll include new account-level analytics such as how many courses are regularly accessed by students, which features and LTIs are most used, and much more.

Please join us for a free webinar on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 12pm MST. This webinar will be presented by a member of our Product Engagement team and will go into further detail of what you can expect from an Executive Business Review.

Show & Tell

  • A cool trick a teacher come up with that allows students to share their Google docs, slides, etc. He sets up a Canvas Discussion. Each student pastes a URL link to their Google doc or file as a Discussion post for other students to access and view.
  • More Google Drive file tricks: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1xAQSOzaodJVg4aH0FA8jT5pPdeIZOShCu7N_gkJVQyI/edit
  • Use Keepvid to download videos off of YouTube so that they can then be shared to students in Canvas.  This should work for any school that blocks YouTube videos.
