This Day In History: Earth Day

17233679331_d3660d3139_m.jpg

Earth Day, an event to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems, was celebrated in the United States for the first time on April 22, 1970. Millions of Americans, including students from thousands of colleges and universities, participated in rallies, marches, and educational programs. More importantly, it brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.

“The objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda," Senator Gaylord Nelson said.

Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces.

Grade Pass Back - Important Information

PowerSchool is coming out with a new gradebook that supports standards. Teachers will have a choice to use the new gradebook, called PowerTeacher Pro, alongside the existing PowerTeacher Gradebook.  Canvas will continue to support grade pass back functionality with the existing PowerSchool gradebook. However, GPB will NOT work with PowerTeacher Pro currently. Canvas is currently looking at improving standards (Outcomes) within Canvas.  Development for grade pass back with the new PowerTeacher Pro gradebook will be in-conjunction with Canvas development of standards work.

What does this mean for you? Grade Pass Back will still continue to work for those using the current PowerTeacher Gradebook.  However, if you choose to upgrade to the new PowerTeacher Pro gradebook, Canvas Grade Pass Back will not be available yet.  Before making the switch we encourage you to reach out to your CSM.

We apologize about the inconvenience but our awesome team is working on this for you.

Infinite Campus

InfiniteCampus is supporting OneRoster API for provisioning and is in the process of creating OneRoster API extensions for grade pass back. We are planning to support OneRoster API for provisioning and will develop to the InfiniteCampus OneRoster API extensions. This will be for the grade pass back option once that is available from InfiniteCampus.

This Day In History: First Man in Space

image (16).png

At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union was engulfed in a Space Race with the United States and the other Western countries.  The Soviet Union was the first country to launch the world’s first successful satellite. Sputnik was launched in 1957 as well as Latika, the first animal to orbit the Earth.

The Soviets, in an attempt to one-up the West, successfully put a person into outer space on April 12, 1961. The United States was slated to launch a man into space in May 1961. This man was Yuri Gagarin. His feat brought him to worldwide fame by orbiting the Earth — which took 89 minutes at 187 miles up from earth.

This leap in history helped the rest of the world reach new potential. From the Space Race, we were able to successfully land man on the moon. This event assisted in the progression of technology through the advancement of computers, mass satellite communication, and unmanned exploration of many planets in our Solar System.

Canvas Update: TurnItIn

Please see the recent Turnitin update to our customers about the API to LTI transition.

Turnitin has recently released a Turnitin Canvas LTI integration, which was developed in partnership with Instructure, the makers of Canvas. This integration is replacing a prior Canvas integration which relied upon a Turnitin developed API.

We are asking that our Canvas users begin to adopt the new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration by the end of 2016. Early adoption is recommended to allow for plenty of time to train end users on the new integration.

With the release of the new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration, we will begin retiring the legacy API which will no longer be available starting in 2017. The only Turnitin-supported route for integration with the Canvas learning management system from January 2017 forward will be the Turnitin Canvas LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) option. LTI is a standard created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium which aims to establish a standard way of integrating rich learning applications, and many--if not most--integrated solutions are moving in this direction of standardization.

The new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration will give our Canvas users full access to all Turnitin functionality (OriginalityCheck, GradeMark, and PeerMark) and, most importantly, will ensure that our Canvas users receive any new features and fixes as soon as we introduce them into the product. Moving forward, we hope that this will make it easier to administer and use Turnitin for the Canvas community.

For those who are wondering, it is possible to run the legacy Canvas integration and Canvas LTI integration in parallel during the transition period. When the previous Canvas integration becomes unavailable, classes and assignments originally created through the previous integration will remain accessible by logging into Turnitin directly. These older classes and assignments will not be visible in the LTI integration.

In the near future, the Turnitin Integrations team will be reaching out to each customer directly who has not yet made the transition to the LTI integration to offer support and assistance during the transition.

We urge you to look over the resources we have provided below, which we hope will help to answer the most common questions and address any concerns.

This Day In History: The Olympics

image (15).png

The original Olympic games were held in ancient Greece at Olympia in 776 B.C. The events held at that time were foot races, wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, long jump, and javelin. The first Olympic games surrounded the religious festival honoring Zeus and were disbanded by Emperor Theodosius in an effort to eliminate paganism throughout the Roman Empire.

“With the Renaissance, Europe began a long fascination with ancient Greek culture, and in the 18th and 19th centuries some nations staged informal sporting and folkloric festivals bearing the name “Olympic Games.” However, it was not until 1892 that a young French baron, Pierre de Coubertin, seriously proposed reviving the Olympics as a major international competition that would occur every four years. At a conference on international sport in Paris in June 1894, Coubertin again raised the idea, and the 79 delegates from nine countries unanimously approved his proposal. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed, and the first Games were planned for 1896 in Athens, the capital of Greece.”

This Day In History: April Fools Day

image (14).png

April Fools’ Day can be traced as far back as April 1, 1700, and has always been a day of playing joke’s on one another, whether good or bad.

There have been many rumors surrounding April Fools’ Day and how it came about. Its origins still remain a mystery. Here are several points about the day that you might find interesting.

1) The speculation about the origins of the holiday began in 1582 when the French switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. There were several people who did not adapt to the new changes, and thus were fooled on certain dates.

2) Another idea about the origins of the day comes from ancient Rome during the festival of Hilaria, which was celebrated at the end of March during the transition from Winter to Spring. The phrase that was coined there was “Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.” She is a tricky lady!
