This Day In History: The Olympics
The original Olympic games were held in ancient Greece at Olympia in 776 B.C. The events held at that time were foot races, wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, long jump, and javelin. The first Olympic games surrounded the religious festival honoring Zeus and were disbanded by Emperor Theodosius in an effort to eliminate paganism throughout the Roman Empire.
“With the Renaissance, Europe began a long fascination with ancient Greek culture, and in the 18th and 19th centuries some nations staged informal sporting and folkloric festivals bearing the name “Olympic Games.” However, it was not until 1892 that a young French baron, Pierre de Coubertin, seriously proposed reviving the Olympics as a major international competition that would occur every four years. At a conference on international sport in Paris in June 1894, Coubertin again raised the idea, and the 79 delegates from nine countries unanimously approved his proposal. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed, and the first Games were planned for 1896 in Athens, the capital of Greece.”
In this production release (April 2), admins can manage courses in their accounts with a new storage report, manage users with two permission changes, and edit global announcements. They are also notified when they are using the Theme Editor with High Contrast Styles. Instructors can view calculation improvements in the Gradebook and Quizzes, access student analytics directly from the People page, and more accurately reply to group comments in SpeedGrader. All users benefit from improvements to Notifications and the Assignments submission details page.
In this Catalog release, the student dashboard provides access to student transcripts, and listings support decimal values in course credit fields.
