This Day in History: The Cuban Missle Crisis
On October 28,1962, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove Russian missiles from Cuba in exchange for a promise from the United States to respect Cuba’s territorial sovereignty. This move ended 13 days of tensions and anxiety between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Cuban Missile Crisis was a pivotal moment in the Cold War. Fifty years ago the United States and the Soviet Union stood closer to Armageddon than at any other moment in history. In October 1962 President John F. Kennedy was informed of a U-2 spy-plane’s discovery of Soviet nuclear-tipped missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy decided this could not stand, and, over the course of 13 days, he and Khrushchev confronted each other to the edge of what President Kennedy referred to as the “abyss of destruction."
Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and both nations initiated steps for greater control over nuclear weapons.
