Accessing Your Canvas Data with CanvasDataViewer: Encore

CanvasDataViewer is used to automatically download Canvas Data files into a SQL Server database where you can query and analyze the information. In this webinar you can get a guided tour of CanvasDataViewer and find what it takes to set it up and host it.

Project Description

Our project is used to automatically download Canvas Data files into a SQL Server database where you can query and analyze the information. Canvas Data files are very large--currently a full download includes at least one file for each of 82+ tables, and some tables require more than one file. For a large campus each daily download can include more than 8GB of files that contain millions of database records. Manually downloading Canvas Data files from the Canvas web interface and loading them into a database can take hours. Our CanvasDataViewer automates this process. When set up with a SQL job agent to run the process at night, you can come to work every morning with fresh Canvas Data waiting for you to analyze.

Canvas Releases

In this production release (August 26), third-party authentication supports the admin role federated attribute, the SIS Export courses.csv report includes information about course formats, and several APIs and SIS files have received updated functionality.

SpeedGrader has been optimized for performance in large courses. In DocViewer, Point and Area annotations no longer require comments, and DocViewer displays an annotation session warning before the session is refreshed.

For all users, the Rich Content Editor includes an option to easily insert and embed media. The mobile login page in Canvas apps has been updated for design consistency with the desktop login page. And for institutions with multiple authentication methods, logged out users are redirected to the login page for their last authenticated account.

The Canvas MasteryPaths feature allows you or a course designer to customize learning experiences to students based on student performance. With MasteryPaths, you identify activities for each student’s learning path and differentiate assignments for required learning, optional learning, or choosing their own content and assignments within a specific path, which helps them achieve course mastery.

MasteryPaths is based on differentiated assignments, which allows assignments to be assigned to different users and sections. With MasteryPaths, assignments are differentiated to individual students automatically and no additional work is required aside from grading student assignments as usual. After the initial assignment has been graded (either manually or automatically), the student’s score designates which conditional items(s) will be assigned as a learning path.
