Important Update on Canvas Commons

AN IMPORTANT UPDATE TO CANVAS COMMONS IS COMING JANUARY 3, 2017

On January 3, 2017, Canvas Commons will automatically update and be switched from off to on. If you haven’t used Commons yet, we urge you to check it out—we’re a little biased, but it’s pretty cool. Commons is a learning object repository that enables educators to find, import, and share resources. A digital library full of educational content, Commons allows Canvas users to share learning resources with other users as well as import learning resources into a Canvas course.

Here’s what you can do with Commons:

• Create a personal learning object repository
• Build a course from scratch with relevant materials shared by other Canvas users
• Create a name for yourself and your institution as a subject matter expert

If you have any questions or don't wish to have Commons on, please contact your CSM directly.

Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-12-10)

In this production release (December 10), admins can set grading period start dates to 12:00 AM, find courses by sort options, and view terms by active and past terms.

Instructors using grading periods have additional close date verifications in assignments and the Gradebook. Users with instructor roles can also receive group announcement notifications without being enrolled in a course group and can automatically assign groups by section in the People page.

For all users who have customized their Courses list, Canvas automatically adds all new enrollments as a favorite.

Users who can manage Outcomes will notice a placement change for the Manage Rubrics button. All users will also notice small updates in Files and in Rich Content Editor links, as well as a global font update throughout Canvas.

Turnitin API Deprecation: December 31st

On December 31, Turnitin will discontinue the Canvas API integration and will only support the LTI integration. If you are a Canvas admin whose institution is using Turnitin and have not yet enabled the Turnitin LTI for your account, please contact your Turnitin account representative for your external app credentials. The Turnitin LTI can be configured for your account as shown in the External App URL lesson. For additional questions, please see the Turnitin Canvas integration page or contact your Canvas Customer Success Manager.

Canvas Authentication Passwords: January 7

On January 7, passwords for Canvas authentication will require eight characters instead of six characters. Institutions using other external authentication methods will not be affected. The eight-character length requirement only applies when a user creates a new password or resets a password. Existing six- and seven-character passwords will not be affected unless the password needs to be changed or reset.

This Day in History: Napolean Crowned Emperor

napoleanking.jpg

Napoleon Bonaparte, a French military and political leader, was crowned Napoleon I on December 2, 1804. He was the first Frenchman to hold the title of emperor in a thousand years.

The Corsican-born Napoleon, one of the greatest military strategists in history, rapidly rose in the ranks of the French Revolutionary Army during the late 1790s. By 1799, France was at war with most of Europe, and Napoleon returned home from his Egyptian campaign to take over the reigns of the French government and save his nation from collapse. After becoming first consul in February 1800, he reorganized his armies and defeated Austria. In 1802, he established the Napoleonic Code, a new system of French law, and in 1804 he established the French empire. By 1807, Napoleon’s empire stretched from the River Elbe in the north, down through Italy in the south, and from the Pyrenees to the Dalmatian coast.

This Day in History: Billy Joel's Album Hits #1

926273-billy-joel.jpg

On this day in 1977, Bill Joel earned his first #1 album when 52nd Street topped the Billboard pop chart. 52nd Street was the highly anticipated follow-up to Joel’s 1977 breakthrough album The Stranger, which had achieved Platinum status and made Joel a household name on the strength of singles like “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song),” “Just The Way You Are” and “She’s Always A Woman.” The Stranger surpassed Simon & Garfunkel's Bridge Over Troubled Water as the biggest-selling album in Columbia Records history, but it just missed reaching #1 on the Billboard chart. 52nd Street, which included the radio hits “Big Shot,” “My Life” and “Honesty,” achieved that feat on November 18, 1978, and remained at the top of the charts for the next seven straight weeks, becoming the top-selling album of the year. It also went on to earn Billy Joel his first Album of the Year award at the 22nd Annual Grammy Awards in February 1980.

This Day in History: World War I Ends

download.jpeg

On November 11, 1918 the first world war ended. Ferdinand Foch, commander in chief of all Allied forces on the Western Front, sent a message by telegraph to all his commanders: “Hostilities will cease on the entire front November 11 at 11 a.m. French time.”

As the historian John Buchan has written of that memorable morning: “Officers had their watches in their hands, and the troops waited with the same grave composure with which they had fought.” As watch hands reached 11, “there came a second of expectant silence, and then a curious rippling sound, which observers far behind the front likened to the noise of a light wind. It was the sound of men cheering from the Vosges [mountains] to the sea.” The dominant emotion for many on and off the battlefield was relief at the coming of peace, mixed with somber mourning for the many lives lost.

This Day in History: King Tut's Tomb Discovered

king-tut-tomb-wall-three.jpg

On this day in 1923, English archaeologist Howard Carter entered the sealed burial chamber of the ancient Egyptian ruler King Tutankhamen.

Because the ancient Egyptians saw their pharaohs as gods, they carefully preserved their bodies after death, burying them in elaborate tombs containing rich treasures to accompany the rulers into the afterlife. In the 19th century, archeologists from all over the world flocked to Egypt, where they uncovered a number of these tombs. Many had long ago been broken into by robbers and stripped of their riches.

Inside lay a sarcophagus with three coffins nested inside one another. The last coffin, made of solid gold, contained the mummified body of King Tut. Among the riches found in the tomb were golden shrines, jewelry, statues, a chariot, weapons and clothing. The perfectly preserved mummy was the most valuable, as it was the first one ever to be discovered. Despite rumors that a curse would befall anyone who disturbed the tomb, its treasures were carefully catalogued, removed and included in a famous traveling exhibition called the “Treasures of Tutankhamen.” The exhibition’s permanent home is the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

This Day in History: The Cuban Missle Crisis

a-cover.jpg

On October 28,1962, Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev agreed to remove Russian missiles from Cuba in exchange for a promise from the United States to respect Cuba’s territorial sovereignty. This move ended 13 days of tensions and anxiety between the United States and the Soviet Union.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was a pivotal moment in the Cold War. Fifty years ago the United States and the Soviet Union stood closer to Armageddon than at any other moment in history. In October 1962 President John F. Kennedy was informed of a U-2 spy-plane’s discovery of Soviet nuclear-tipped missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy decided this could not stand, and, over the course of 13 days, he and Khrushchev confronted each other to the edge of what President Kennedy referred to as the “abyss of destruction."

Thankfully, cooler heads prevailed and both nations initiated steps for greater control over nuclear weapons.

This Day in History: Guggenheim Museum

Solomon-R-Guggenheim-Museum-Levels.jpg

On October 21, 1959 the Guggenheim Museum opened its doors to a crowd of thousands curious to see what was inside the oddly shaped building.

Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and founded by Solomon R. Guggenheim, this groundbreaking design received lots of admiration, as well as criticism. Over the course of 16 years, Wright worked to bring his unique vision for the building to life. Designed with Wright's love of nature in mind, the 50,000 meter space resembled a giant seashell, with each room opening fluidly into the next. The museum, located on New York's Museum Mile, has become one of the city's most popular attractions.

This Day in History: Little Women

On September 30, 1868, the first of two volumes of Little Woman, written by Louisa May Alcott was published. What is know as a “beloved children’s classic,” has become a timeless classic for any reader.

The story is about an average family, as far as socio-economic status and size was concerned. However, the parents of the family had only four daughters. The tale follows their ordinary lives, and their “passage from childhood to womanhood.” It is a touching story that connects universally to people’s emotions.

September 16, 1932: Gandhi Begins “Fast Unto Death”

While sitting in prison for leading a civil disobedience campaign, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi decided to fast until his death in protest to “the British government's decision to separate India's electoral system by caste.” He believed that he was fighting for the downtrodden, or the lowest class in India, as the social class divide affected them the most. Luckily the British Government decided to not move forward with their proposal, so the fast fortunately did not result in death, and lasted six days.

The First Computer Bug!! Literally…

On September 9, 1945, the first computer bug was found. “Operators at the Harvard Faculty at the Computation Laboratory traced an error in the Mark II Computer to a moth trapped in a relay, coining the term bug.” They removed the bug and taped it to their research notes.

This Day In History: U.S. Treasury

Treasury.jpg

Who Doesn’t Love Money?

On this day in 1798 the U.S. Treasury was officially founded by Congress. This process had been in the works for while, as America’s Leaders “issu[ed] cash that doubled as redeemable ‘bills of credit’” to fund the Revolutionary War. It worked like a charm…and charmed America into their first debt.

Canvas LIVE Event: Faculty Tips and Tricks: Hints and Reminders from Peers for Getting the Most out of Canvas

Description

One of your most valuable resources are your colleagues, especially the ones ahead of the pack, testing things out and smoothing the way for those who follow their lead. These tips and tricks are compiled from UCF faculty, often in their own words, of things that work (or didn’t work!) for them in Canvas. Often these are one-time settings that are easy to forget from one term to the next. What started as a one-time, ten-item checklist has grown to a developed resource and links to UCF materials that are available to everyone online.

WEEK OF 2016-08-26

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day In History: Mother Teresa

Mother Teresa 2.jpg

Mother Teresa was born on August 26, 1910

In 1979 Mother Teresa, who was born as Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, received the Nobel Peace Prize for her unrelenting assistance to the poor and needy throughout the world, and throughout her entire life. At age 18, Agnes left her family home to join a commune of nuns, as she felt her calling in life was to spread the good word. At age 20 she went to India to take her final vows, and from there, devoted her life to helping the poor outside of the convent walls.
