The Beatles

the-beatles-circa-1966-650-430.jpg

The Beatles kicked off their first U.S. Tour on this day in 1964 in San Francisco at the Cow Palace with astonishing success. The venue, which was only intended to hold 17,000 people ended up being packed with over 17,130 screaming fans.

The tour stemmed from their famous Ed Sullivan Show debut, where fans were blown away by the European group, and demanded to be able to see them live. The Beatles’ popularity only continued to grow, and to this day they are one of the most famous bands of all time.

Canvas Parent APP is Here!

Thank you all for your patience and interest in the new Parent App from Canvas! If you'd like to use the new app, you will need to enable it at the Account Settings level of Canvas. We want to also advise you that this app is currently still in beta, so there may be some kinks along the way that we need to iron out. Please let us know what these issues are but we also ask for your patience while we work it out. The non-beta version should be ready by the end of September, beginning of October!

To turn on Canvas Parent: Navigate to Settings, then Feature Options and toggle 'Canvas Parent' to on. This will add your institution to available schools in the parent app. In order to align with students, parents will need the login information (login email, or name and the student’s password). If you do not see your school in the drop down menu of options, please let your CSM know and they will get it added.

Feel free to join our Parent App Focus Group for updates and new release info. There you will also find a guide of FAQs for your convenience but please don't hesitate to let your CSM know if you have any questions.

On this day in history, August 12, 1990, Sue, the Tyrannosaurus rex was found in South Dakota by Sue Hendrickson, who worked for the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research.

Sue found "her" in Faith, South Dakota, and this T-rex was "part of the largest-ever Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton ever discovered, [and was] a 65 million-year-old specimen." Although this find, as it was preserved so well, enabled scientists to determine many things about the T-rex and how this species lived, they could not determine the skeleton's gender, so she'll remain a she for now.

This Day In History: NBA Merges With ABA

Screen Shot 2016-08-05 at 2.40.27 PM.pngThe National Basketball Association (or NBA as we all know it), wasn't always the only basketball organization out there. The American Basketball Association housed some of the biggest names in basketball, including

"the Denver Nuggets, the Indiana Pacers, the New York (later New Jersey) Nets and the San Antonio Spurs." On this day, in 1976, due to some poor business decisions from the American league, the NBA absorbed the ABA. It was unfortunate as the ABA games sported a red, white, and blue ball, and marketed players with catchy nicknames that have continued to be etched in our minds of the players we love, like "Julius “Dr. J” Erving and George “The Iceman” Gervin."

This day in History: NASA Was Created

As the most innovative and up and coming country around, we couldn't sit around and let Russia out do us when it came to space exploration. On October 4, 1967, Russia successfully launched Sputnik 1, which was their first satellite in space. With Russia's release came the space race.

The United States answered Russia's satellite with a one up, with Neil Armstrong's successful mission, and completion as the first man to ever walk on the moon. This was possible due to the new organization known as NASA, who provided funding for these once unimagined projects in space.

Fast Track Series

One of the most successful training tools we have seen is using the Fast Track Videos to get your faculty and staff excited about a new feature in Canvas. Set them up for success by showing them the quick 2.5-5 minute video on the new feature (hopefully they won’t get bored after 2.5 minutes) and then teach them how to utilize it in their classrooms. Let them play around with the feature before setting them free and watch the feature come to life! We promise, it works.

This Day In History: 8 July 1972  Bill Withers - Lean On Me - YouTube

Screen Shot 2016-07-08 at 11.07.29 AM.png

“Lean On Me” moves into the number one spot on the pop charts on this day in 1972.

At age 34, Bill Withers recorded the song “Lean On Me,” just two years after stepping into a recording studio for the first time.

“Withers was still a full-time factory worker when he wrote the song whose success would finally convince him to give up his day job. “For a long time I didn’t really accept my new career,” he told the Los Angeles Times in 1975. “It was like I was on vacation from the factory and at some point I would have to take my tool box and go back to work.”

Tips and Tricks

With so many of you preparing for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year, we have received quite a few questions on your SIS rollover and how to import new courses, enrollments, sections, etc. We decided to include a few instructions below so you have the information you need.

If you are using PowerSchool...once you are ready to rollover your school year, let your CSM know. We will make the change in our SIS App so that your 2016-2017 courses and enrollments will show in your Canvas instance.

If you are using Skyward...contact your Skyward representative to rollover to the new school year.

If you are using Clever...please reach out to your CSM as we have paused all Clever syncs until we know when you will have all of your 2016-2017 data in Clever. We also have a few new features for Clever this year so we will want to discuss these new features with you before we sync the new years data.

K12 Bulletin AND Higher Ed Collective: New User Interface Change Over

This MANDATORY change is THIS SATURDAY. On July 9, 2016, the New Canvas Interface will no longer be a Feature Option in Canvas and will be enabled for all Canvas users as a standard feature. Enabling the New UI affects the user interface for the entire Canvas account.

Still haven’t decided to try out the new UI yet? Check outhttps://docs.google.com/document/d/1vPGE62UkzLdNCc9iGmwmO0PV9Sa1vLrCpxxdeHZMYV8/editthis Google Doc our awesome CSM, Andrew Gooch, made that shows the differences between the old and new UI.

  • New UI Resource Materials click HERE and Canvas Video click HERE.
  • JULY 9, 2016 is your deadline.
  • Not sure if you have moved over or not? Reach out to your CSM with questions.

Here’s a tip: If you want to brand your instance to represent your school colors and logo, start by playing with the theme editor when you log in. If you notice that you are having issues with the preview not keeping your changes, make sure that the “high contrast UI” feature is turned off under the admin settings. This will prevent custom branding. You can even brand specific sub-accounts (if you have multiple schools in your district using Canvas). Check out our Community page HERE to learn how. Check out these resources in our Community on using the new theme editor:

When Pablo Picasso was only 19 years old, the Spaniard’s art was exhibited for the first time in Paris, France. They displayed 75 of his pieces that “offered moody, representational paintings by a young artist with obvious talent.”

Throughout his life, Picasso created “50,000 paintings, drawings, engravings, sculptures, and ceramics,” and continues to be one of the most well know artists in history.

WEEK OF 2016-06-17

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day In History: June 17, 1885

01-statue-of-liberty-facts.jpg

On this day in 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrived in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue has become known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy.

The Statue of Liberty was designed by French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi (who modeled it after his own mother), with assistance from engineer Gustave Eiffel, who later developed...you guessed it...the Eiffel Tower. The statue alone cost the French an estimated $250,000 (more than $5.5 million today). The statue was intended to commemorate the American Revolution and a century of friendship between the US and France.

After being reassembled, the 450,000-pound statue was official dedicated on October 28, 1886, by President Cleveland, who said, "We will not forget that Liberty has here made her home; nor shall her chosen altar be neglected." At the time, this structure was taller than any other in New York City. The statue was originally a copper-color, but over the years it underwent a natural color-change process called patination that produced its current greenish-blue hue.

Today, the Statue of Liberty is one of America's most famous landmarks. Over the years, it has been the site of political rallies and protests (from suffragettes to anti-war activists), has been featured in numerous movies and countless photographs, and has received millions of visitors from around the world.

This Day in History: June 10, 1752

On this day in 1752, Dr. Benjamin Franklin flew his kite during a thunderstorm. He was able to collect an electrical change into a Leyden jar, which was a small jar designed to retain static electricity. It stored electricity and could then be used as basically a battery.

By collecting electricity from the lighting bolt, Franklin was able demonstrate the electrical nature of lighting which was largely unknown during his lifetime.

Franklin was also the one who coined such terms as an electrician and battery. He also invented the first lightning rod for buildings to protect them from lightning strikes.

Update the Syllabus Page

The Syllabus page provides you with a tool to organize all of your graded activities and events into one place. Any time you create an assignment, activity, or calendar item with a due date in Canvas, it will automatically populate in the Syllabus tool. It also provides an easy way for your students to locate the Syllabus!

Take Action

  • Post your Course Syllabus to the Syllabus tool as a file. Try converting your file to PDF format first, but Word doc format is completely acceptable.

  • Add Available and Due dates to your assignments and other graded activities. Adding these dates will help organize the list of graded activities and events auto-populated in the Syllabus tool.

“One hundred and 20 miles above the earth, Major Edward H. White II opens the hatch of the Gemini 4 and steps out of the capsule, becoming the first American astronaut to walk in space. Attached to the craft by a 25-foot tether and controlling his movements with a hand-held oxygen jet-propulsion gun, White remained outside the capsule for just over 20 minutes. As a space walker, White had been preceded by Soviet cosmonaut Aleksei A. Leonov, who on March 18, 1965, was the first man ever to walk in space.”

At the height of the Great Depression, the Golden Gate Bridge opened to the public on May 27, 1937. The bridge took four years to construct, and when it was completed, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world, spanning 4200 feet. The bridge was named after the narrow straight that marked the entrance to the San Francisco Bay.

Since its opening 79 years ago, nearly two billion cars have crossed the bridge.

This Day In History: May 20, 1873

Levis.png

On May 20, 1873, a San Francisco entrepreneur, Levi Strauss, patented pants for the working-man with reinforced metal rivets. From this initial clothing item, Strauss brought jeans to the world stage.

In San Francisco, Strauss established a wholesale dry goods. His new business imported clothing, fabric and other dry goods to sell in the small stores opening all over California and other Western States, to supply the rapidly expanding communities of gold miners and other settlers flooding into the area.

“At first his company employed seamstresses working out of their homes, but by the 1880s, Strauss had opened his own factory. The famous 501brand jean–known until 1890 as “XX”–was soon a bestseller, and the company grew quickly. By the 1920s, Levi’s denim waist overalls were the top-selling men’s work pant in the United States. As decades passed, the craze only grew, and now blue jeans are worn by men and women, young and old, around the world.”

This Day In History: Why We Fear Friday the 13th

6212784920_f438ba7f16_m.jpg

In Western superstition, Friday the 13th is considered an unlucky day. But why do we fear this day? Some say it originated from the Middle Ages and the story of Jesus' last super and the 13 individuals present in the upper room. While there is evidence of both Friday and the number 13 being considered unlucky - there is no record of the conjunction of the two causing and more "unlucky-ness" before the 19th century.

In Italy, 13 is considered a lucky number while Italians seem to fear Friday, the 17th. This legend comes from the number 17, in Roman numerals as: XVII. By shuffling the letters, one can easily make the word VIXI which means "I have lived" (implying death in the present) and is an omen of bad luck.

In Hispanic and Greek cultures, it is not Friday which causes anxiety but Tuesday, the 13th. Tuesday is considered in dominance by Ares (the God of War) and Constantinople was defeated by both the Ottomans and the Fourth Crusade happened on Tuesday, the 13th.

In the United States, it is estimated that 17 to 21 million people are affected by this fear. It has been reported that businesses lose $800-$900 million dollars on this day, due to lack of customers leaving their homes. So, whether you are superstitious or not, now you know where this day in history comes from. Just don't be mean to kids name Jason at summer camp.

This Day In History: Earth Day

17233679331_d3660d3139_m.jpg

Earth Day, an event to increase public awareness of the world’s environmental problems, was celebrated in the United States for the first time on April 22, 1970. Millions of Americans, including students from thousands of colleges and universities, participated in rallies, marches, and educational programs. More importantly, it brought 20 million Americans out into the spring sunshine for peaceful demonstrations in favor of environmental reform.

“The objective was to get a nationwide demonstration of concern for the environment so large that it would shake the political establishment out of its lethargy and, finally, force this issue permanently onto the national political agenda," Senator Gaylord Nelson said.

Earth Day is celebrated in more than 193 countries each year. Numerous communities celebrate Earth Week, an entire week of activities focused on the environmental issues that the world faces.

Grade Pass Back - Important Information

PowerSchool is coming out with a new gradebook that supports standards. Teachers will have a choice to use the new gradebook, called PowerTeacher Pro, alongside the existing PowerTeacher Gradebook.  Canvas will continue to support grade pass back functionality with the existing PowerSchool gradebook. However, GPB will NOT work with PowerTeacher Pro currently. Canvas is currently looking at improving standards (Outcomes) within Canvas.  Development for grade pass back with the new PowerTeacher Pro gradebook will be in-conjunction with Canvas development of standards work.

What does this mean for you? Grade Pass Back will still continue to work for those using the current PowerTeacher Gradebook.  However, if you choose to upgrade to the new PowerTeacher Pro gradebook, Canvas Grade Pass Back will not be available yet.  Before making the switch we encourage you to reach out to your CSM.

We apologize about the inconvenience but our awesome team is working on this for you.

Infinite Campus

InfiniteCampus is supporting OneRoster API for provisioning and is in the process of creating OneRoster API extensions for grade pass back. We are planning to support OneRoster API for provisioning and will develop to the InfiniteCampus OneRoster API extensions. This will be for the grade pass back option once that is available from InfiniteCampus.
