This Day In History: First Man in Space

image (16).png

At the height of the Cold War, the Soviet Union was engulfed in a Space Race with the United States and the other Western countries.  The Soviet Union was the first country to launch the world’s first successful satellite. Sputnik was launched in 1957 as well as Latika, the first animal to orbit the Earth.

The Soviets, in an attempt to one-up the West, successfully put a person into outer space on April 12, 1961. The United States was slated to launch a man into space in May 1961. This man was Yuri Gagarin. His feat brought him to worldwide fame by orbiting the Earth — which took 89 minutes at 187 miles up from earth.

This leap in history helped the rest of the world reach new potential. From the Space Race, we were able to successfully land man on the moon. This event assisted in the progression of technology through the advancement of computers, mass satellite communication, and unmanned exploration of many planets in our Solar System.

Canvas Update: TurnItIn

Please see the recent Turnitin update to our customers about the API to LTI transition.

Turnitin has recently released a Turnitin Canvas LTI integration, which was developed in partnership with Instructure, the makers of Canvas. This integration is replacing a prior Canvas integration which relied upon a Turnitin developed API.

We are asking that our Canvas users begin to adopt the new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration by the end of 2016. Early adoption is recommended to allow for plenty of time to train end users on the new integration.

With the release of the new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration, we will begin retiring the legacy API which will no longer be available starting in 2017. The only Turnitin-supported route for integration with the Canvas learning management system from January 2017 forward will be the Turnitin Canvas LTI (Learning Tools Interoperability) option. LTI is a standard created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium which aims to establish a standard way of integrating rich learning applications, and many--if not most--integrated solutions are moving in this direction of standardization.

The new Turnitin Canvas LTI integration will give our Canvas users full access to all Turnitin functionality (OriginalityCheck, GradeMark, and PeerMark) and, most importantly, will ensure that our Canvas users receive any new features and fixes as soon as we introduce them into the product. Moving forward, we hope that this will make it easier to administer and use Turnitin for the Canvas community.

For those who are wondering, it is possible to run the legacy Canvas integration and Canvas LTI integration in parallel during the transition period. When the previous Canvas integration becomes unavailable, classes and assignments originally created through the previous integration will remain accessible by logging into Turnitin directly. These older classes and assignments will not be visible in the LTI integration.

In the near future, the Turnitin Integrations team will be reaching out to each customer directly who has not yet made the transition to the LTI integration to offer support and assistance during the transition.

We urge you to look over the resources we have provided below, which we hope will help to answer the most common questions and address any concerns.

This Day In History: The Olympics

image (15).png

The original Olympic games were held in ancient Greece at Olympia in 776 B.C. The events held at that time were foot races, wrestling, chariot racing, boxing, long jump, and javelin. The first Olympic games surrounded the religious festival honoring Zeus and were disbanded by Emperor Theodosius in an effort to eliminate paganism throughout the Roman Empire.

“With the Renaissance, Europe began a long fascination with ancient Greek culture, and in the 18th and 19th centuries some nations staged informal sporting and folkloric festivals bearing the name “Olympic Games.” However, it was not until 1892 that a young French baron, Pierre de Coubertin, seriously proposed reviving the Olympics as a major international competition that would occur every four years. At a conference on international sport in Paris in June 1894, Coubertin again raised the idea, and the 79 delegates from nine countries unanimously approved his proposal. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was formed, and the first Games were planned for 1896 in Athens, the capital of Greece.”

This Day In History: April Fools Day

image (14).png

April Fools’ Day can be traced as far back as April 1, 1700, and has always been a day of playing joke’s on one another, whether good or bad.

There have been many rumors surrounding April Fools’ Day and how it came about. Its origins still remain a mystery. Here are several points about the day that you might find interesting.

1) The speculation about the origins of the holiday began in 1582 when the French switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar. There were several people who did not adapt to the new changes, and thus were fooled on certain dates.

2) Another idea about the origins of the day comes from ancient Rome during the festival of Hilaria, which was celebrated at the end of March during the transition from Winter to Spring. The phrase that was coined there was “Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather.” She is a tricky lady!

WEEK OF 2016-03-25

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History: Patrick Henry- “Give me liberty, or give me death.”

Give me liberty or death.png

On March 23, 1775, Patrick Henry, a politician later appointed to be the Governor of Virginia, coined the famous term, "Give me liberty, or give me death." On that day, Henry was rallying troops to fight against British oppression.

There were many events leading up to this particular day. France and Great Britain began to vie for power over the Western European exploration of North and South America. These two powers went to war for domination between 1754-1763, which resulted in the French and Indian War.

The French and Indian war was very costly for the British. Due to this, the British began to heavily tax the colonists. The first real oppression to British taxation began in 1765 when the Stamp Act was passed. Many colonists accepted these various taxes until the Tea Act in 1773, when oppression to British rule became more widely accepted.

On the day Henry gave his famous speech, he was addressing the Virginia Convention about living under such conditions. Henry said that he considered the subject a matter of choice between living in freedom or suffering as slaves. Henry said, "Should I keep back my opinions at such a time, through fear of giving offence, I should consider myself as guilty of treason towards my country, and of an act of disloyalty toward the majesty of heaven, which I revere above all earthly kings."

This Day In History: St. Patrick's Day

Clover.png

The history of Saint Patrick's day dates back to the 17th Century, where it became an official Christian holiday. This holiday celebrates the death of Saint Patrick, who was the patron saint of Ireland, and involves such festivities as public parades, the wearing of shamrocks, as well as green or orange attire. However, there are a few lesser known facts about this holiday that people may not be aware of:

  • The first St. Patrick’s Day parade took place in New York City in 1762
  • St. Patrick was not Irish; rather he was raised in a well-to-do Roman family in modern day England
  • During the American Civil War, both the Union and Confederacy had whole brigades made up entirely of Irishmen
  • Until 1970, St. Patrick’s day was a "dry" holiday in Ireland
  • The shamrock is not the national emblem of Ireland; it is the harp.

The More You Know!

knowledge-centre.jpg

Here at Instructure, we want our service to not only be a differentiator, but also to provide unique value.  With the recent release of Canvas Data, we're able to offer you, our client partners, additional insight into your institution's Canvas usage. To enable that, we've created a new service we're calling the Executive Business Review (EBR). EBRs will be delivered by your CSM free of charge. They'll include new account-level analytics such as how many courses are regularly accessed by students, which features and LTIs are most used, and much more.

Please join us for a free webinar on Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at 12pm MST. This webinar will be presented by a member of our Product Engagement team and will go into further detail of what you can expect from an Executive Business Review.

  Canvas + Google = MAGIC!

Canvas.pnggoogle.pngPanda Magic.png

Featuring Jeremy Perkins, who is one of our top Canvas trainers.

Jeremy Perkins has spent exactly zero hours training as a magician. However, he does know how to make magic happen when using Google within Canvas. Jeremy is Instructure's most senior trainer, and before working for Instructure, he was a Middle School technology teacher. He is proficient in multiple languages, including nerd, and used to play sports before Instructure fattened him up.

Take Away Highlights:

1. Embedding Google Docs/Google Slides/Google Sheets

2. Using the HTML Editor

3. Enabling Google Doc Submissions

Tips and Tricks

Our new UI (User Interface) goes live for every client on July 9, 2016. If you want to brand your instance to represent your school colors and logo, start by playing with the theme editor when you log in. If you notice that you are having issues with the preview not keeping your changes, make sure that the “high contrast UI” feature is turned off under the admin settings. This will prevent custom branding. You can even brand specific sub-accounts (if you have multiple schools in your district using Canvas). Check out our Community page here to learn how: community.canvaslms.com.

This Day In History: Battle of Hampton Roads/Battle of the Ironclads

image (13).png

During the American Civil War, a very small but influential battle took place at Hampton Roads, Virginia between the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia. The battle was very influential despite the fact that it ended in a draw.

At the start of the Civil War, the Union Navy was given the charge to blockade all Southern sea ports. The Southern State’s plans were to create machines, which could either batter their way through these blockades, run through them, or destroy them. The south found and used a partially sunken Union ship, the USS Merrimac, to create a new ship, later renamed the CSS Virginia. The USS Monitor was designed from the ground up to have no sails and be very low in the water.

On the day of the battle, the CSS Virginia was given the task to move through the Union blockade while the USS Monitor was to prevent the CSS Virginia from escaping or destroying the blockading ships. Over the course of several hours, both ships tried to destroy each other without doing any serious damage, because they both seemed “Ironclad.”

What is the Canvas FastTrack Video Series?

Traffic+Jam-200.png

Since Canvas was founded, in 2011, administrators have taken many different approaches to how they rollout Canvas at their institutions. There is not one perfect "one size fits all" way for everyone to implement Canvas and garner the attention and engagement to which most aspire.

The "Canvas FastTrack Video Series" is a quick video guide for teachers to help with the alignment of Canvas tools with SAMR (Substitution Augmentation Modification Redefinition) and the ways to perpetually increase user engagement! For the next 40 days we will present a new 2 1/2 minute video to the Community starting with the Substitution level of SAMR. Please click here to learn more!

This Day In History: President Abraham Lincoln

image (12).png

On this day in 1861, President Lincoln was inaugurated as the 16th President of the United States. Although we are aware of the many accomplishments he achieved, there are other less known facts about Lincoln that are unique for a President. For instance, he is the only President who had obtained a patent by 1849. Lincoln apparently enjoyed tinkering with machines and created a device that kept boats afloat while going through shallow water without dragging. These devices took the shape of empty metal barrels to give a boat more buoyancy. He also enjoyed testing new firearms outside of the White House close to the modern day National Mall. Lincoln also created the Secret Service and put it into legislation, ironically, just hours before he was assassinated on April 14, 1865.

WEEK OF 2016-02-26

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day In History: Pierre Renoir

image (10).png

On February 25, 1841, Pierre Auguste Renoir was born in the south-western city of Limoges, France and is known for his paintings using the Impressionist based style. Renoir first began studying art in 1862 and met artists such as Monet and Sisley; however, he did not begin to gain notoriety until ten years later during the Franco-Prussian War.

"Renoir's paintings are notable for their vibrant light and saturated color, most often focusing on people in intimate and candid compositions."

Later in his life, he developed arthritis which required him to adapt his painting style and technique. After World War 1, he visited the Louvre, where he was able to see his paintings. In 1990, his painting, Bal au Moulin de la Galette sold for $78 million.

This Day in History

image (9).png

On February 19, 1473, Nicolaus Copernicus was born in the central Polish city of Torun. Copernicus has been given the title of “Father of Modern Astronomy." He was the first modern European scientist to propose that the Earth revolved around the sun as well as the other planets.

Copernicus was raised in a wealthy merchant family and education was a large part of his life. He moved to Bologna, Italy to study at the university. During his time in Bologna he lived in the home of Domencio Novara, who was designated to issue astrological forecasts for the city. Copernicus assisted Novara with these astrological forecasts. He was exposed to astrology as well as “aspects of the Ptolemaic system, which placed Earth at the center of the universe.”

Through his life, he completed his “Six Books Concerning the Revolutions of the Heavenly Orbs.” Such ideas range from the earth rotating on its axis to the elliptical patterns of the planets revolving around the sun. By the 18th century, this information was widely accepted.

WEEK OF 2016-02-12

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

image (8).png

On February 11, 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from the Victor Verster Prison. This was a momentous day in history because it changed world politics.

Mandela was a strong political advocate for equal rights in his home country of South Africa and throughout the world. The South African government from 1948-1994 implemented Apartheid, meaning racial segregation of citizens by state authority, which restricted rights of non-whites and barred them from government offices.

During his education at the University of Witwatersrand, Mandela became involved in a movement against the Apartheid. To further his cause, in 1952, he opened the first South African black law-firm, which offered free or low-cost legal counsel to people affected by the Apartheid.

Mandela was imprisoned multiple times throughout his life based on his attacks against the South African government. He was imprisoned from 1962-1990. Many nations and many influential political leaders protested his imprisonment. Some of these leaders protesting the South African Apartheid government included President George Bush, Margaret Thatcher, Pope John Paul II, and French President Francois Mitterrand.

South Africa held general elections on April 27, 1994, and Mandela was elected President due to his vision for equality. He presided over a government who transitioned from an Apartheid minority rule government to a multicultural democracy.

WEEK OF 2016-02-05

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

image (7).png

This day in history, Henry "Hank" Aaron, nicknamed the Hammer or Hammerin Hank, was born on February 5, 1934.

Hank Aaron is a retired Major League Baseball right fielder. He was best known for playing with the Milwaukee Brewers/Atlanta Braves as well as beating Babe Ruth’s home run streak by hitting his 755th and final home run on July 20,1976.

Throughout his life,  Hank faced racial bigotry with a calm and professional demeanor. Sports Illustrated noted Hank’s attitude by writing:

"Is this to be the year in which Aaron, at the age of thirty-nine, takes a moon walk above one of the most hallowed individual records in American sport...? Or will it be remembered as the season in which Aaron, the most dignified of athletes, was besieged with hate mail and trapped by the cobwebs and goblins that lurk in baseball's attic?"

On January 8, 2001, Hank was awarded with the Presidential Citizens Medal by President Clinton. He subsequently received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, from President George W. Bush in June 2002.

Canvas Commons: Black History Month

February is dedicated to a month-long learning about the African American icons, leaders, activists, and inventors who have made significant impacts on American history. And what better way to integrate these topics into Canvas courses than importing just-in-time resources from Commons public.

WEEK OF 2016-01-29

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

This Day in History

unnamed.jpg

On this day in 1886, Karl Benz patented his first car powered by an internal combustion engine named the Motorwagen. Like the Wright Brother after him, Karl gained much of his experience in bicycle shops. Also like the Wright Brothers, he applied much of this technology to his primary invention.

The Motorwagen had many modern features we find on our cars today. It had a water cooled engine, an electric starter for the engine. Also, for you speeders out there, it had a top speed of 8 miles per hour.

As Karl's last name represents, in 1926, Karl Benz merged his growing automobile company with another German car maker, Daimler to become Daimler-Benz. During this merger, the company designed its three pointed symbol to represent that they make engines for land, air, and water, thus becoming Mercedes-Benz.

WEEK OF 2016-01-22

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

Today is...National Blonde Brownie Day

NATIONAL BLONDE BROWNIE DAY

8012455240_0c6454ed42_m.jpg

This unofficial national holiday recognizes blonde brownies, frequently referred to as blondies.
Blonde brownies are similar to the traditional brownies known to all. In place of cocoa, brown sugar is used, giving it a sweet tooth-satisfying molasses flavor!

Most people like to add white chocolate or chocolate chips to their blonde brownies or other things like nuts, toffee or butterscotch. Blonde brownies are usually prepared unfrosted as the brown sugar flavor tends to be sweet enough. These blondies are sometimes served in sundaes, often topped with caramel sauce.

OBSERVE

Enjoy this “tried and true” Blonde Brownies I recipe.  Use #BlondeBrownieDay to post on social media.

WEEK OF 2016-01-15

Your weekly newsletter for the latest and greatest about all things Canvas!

Today is...National Strawberry Ice Cream Day

Strawberry ice cream is made by blending either strawberries or strawberry flavoring with eggs, cream, vanilla and sugar. Food coloring is often used to give it the pink or light red hue.

Dating back to at least 1813, strawberry ice cream was served at the second inauguration of James Madison.

Strawberry ice cream is one of the three flavors in Neapolitan ice cream along with vanilla and chocolate. Strawberry cheesecake ice cream and strawberry ripple ice cream are variations of this feature.

OBSERVE

Have fun celebrating National Strawberry Ice Cream Day by trying one of the following “tried and true” recipes:

Easy Celebration Ice Cream Cake
Yummy Strawberry Shake
Strawberry Ice Cream Pie

Use #StrawberryIceCreamDay to post on social media.

CANVAS RELEASE NOTES

In this production release, admins can enable additional authentication methods through third-party providers. Additionally, this release brings the first round of Community Holiday features to benefit multiple user roles in several Canvas areas.

Note: As part of Saturday's release, all Canvas documentation lessons will be changed so all images display functionality in the new Canvas User Interface.
