How do I view the courses in an account?

You can view a list of courses in your account in the Courses page. Course listings on the Courses page provide a course detail summary that includes the course SIS ID, teacher, and number of enrollments. You can also use the sidebar to filter courses by term, sort courses, and search for courses individually.

Note: Currently the Courses page displays two different layout options. This lesson shows existing functionality for viewing courses in a list format alphabetically and using the Courses sidebar to filter and find courses. To learn more about enhanced filter and searching functionality in the Courses page, please see the new Courses page lesson.

In Global Navigation, click the Admin link [1], then click the name of the account [2].

If you have organized courses in your account by sub-accounts, click the Sub-Accounts link to locate and open the sub-account, then click the sub-account's Courses link.

When you open an account, the account defaults to the Courses page.

If your account contains numerous courses, you can filter and manage courses using the courses sidebar. You can filter and find a course to locate a course by a specific term [1] or search for a course directly [2].

If necessary, you can also add a new course to the account [3].

To show courses from a term, click the Terms drop-down menu [1]. Terms are grouped by active, future, and past terms. The Default term always displays at the top of the menu.

If you want to hide courses with no enrollments, click the Hide enrollmentless courses checkbox [2].

If Blueprint Courses are enabled for your institution and you only want to filter by blueprint courses, click the Show only blueprint courses checkbox [3].

To sort courses in the course display, click the Sort drop-down menu [4]. Courses can be sorted by A–Z (by course name, ascending), Z–A (by course name, descending), oldest to newest (by course creation date, ascending), and newest to oldest (by course creation date, descending).

Click the Filter button [5]. The Courses page will display all filtered results.

You can also search for a course directly. In the Find a Course field [1], type the name of the course or the SIS ID. Canvas will generate a list of courses based on the field entry. When the course name displays, click the name of the course.

To view all courses related to your search term, click the Go button [2]. The Courses page will display all search results.

Note: You can use the Find a Course functionality in addition to the course filters.

When you open an account, the account defaults to the Courses page.

Courses for the account display alphabetically in the courses page. If available, each course displays the course name [1], the course reference code [2], SIS ID [3], number of enrolled students [4], and enrolled teachers/instructors [5].

Long course names are truncated in the Courses page.

Note: The reference code is also known as the course code or short name.

Unpublished courses display the Unpublished icon next to the course name [1]. Published courses do not display an icon, and the name of the course displays in your institution's primary link color [2].

View Blueprint Courses

If Blueprint Courses are enabled for your institution, blueprint courses are indicated below the reference code [1]. You can also view the number of associated courses [2].

When a blueprint course is synced to an associated course, you can view the date and time of the last blueprint course sync [3].

To open a course, click the name of the course [1].

The course also includes quick-access links to the course settings, statistics, and the home page [2].
