This document is a new idea to help us ascertain what the things are that are specific to the APAC region. These could be feature ideas, bugs, usability, things that we (as a group) wish to band together on. The idea is for us, as a group, to raise items where we as a region have different or specific needs than the rest of the Canvas Community.

 

This is a fresh idea, we can modify the columns below as we see fit. I anticipate that things will start here, but very quickly lets add them to a different living document for each idea.

Item: Reset Course Content

Remove the Reset Course Content as a default permission for instructor-like roles. 

Causes issues if the site is reset with the auto integrations already set up.

Remove the requirement for individual staff and students to accept the Terms of Service and create a separate relationship with Instructure. 

In the short term, modify the ToS so that it DOESN'T SHOUT AT EVERYONE and is written in plain English, rather that being difficult for our students to understand what they are agreeing to. 

Poor user experience for students with SHOUTING ToS in the first para, and difficult to understand language.

25 Jan 201825 Jan 2018Make more granular the controls that students have over their profile information. How do you handle Student Profile information? Poor student experience as they are not able to control what information about them is made available to other students. This could have safety issues.

25 Jan 201825 Jan 2018While the Student View is useful, staff need to be able to test interactions between students. That means that an additional test student is needed in order to test those behaviours/student experience. We also strongly discourage support staff from masquerading as students in testing or support situations so having an additional test student would enable support staff to test interactions more effectively. Provides academics with the opportunity to test and demonstrate behaviours between students using Canvas tools. Enables support staff to do this for support purposes without masquerading.

25 Jan 201825 Jan 2018We want to be able to separate out Student view from this function, as we want academics to be able to use Student View but not delete courses. Currently have to take the risk of allowing deletion of courses to enable Student View.

Course Role Permissions: Change the Change Course State role so that there are separate Publish and Delete roles for courses. 

We want to be able to prevent courses from being deleted by non-admins. This also connects with the Change Course State role. 

Uncontrolled course deletion which violates legislated record keeping requirements.

Chang the Manage Courses role so that Add/Edit/Delete are separate permissions. We want to be able to prevent courses from being deleted through account and course roles. 

We want to prevent courses from being added manually in some sub accounts, but allowed in some others. 

Uncontrolled course deletion which violates legislated record keeping requirements.

The creation of groups should be possible through a single section of students in a course. Uploading of csv data or other data upload options to create groups should be available. An option to publishing content to a selected group should be available. In general, all options for teachers where students can be selected to have access to content or a tool, should also have the option to be limited to group(s).

Limited group creation and control of content will create complications for larger online courses/units.

The capacity to disable LTIs for installation by administration should also apply to the importation of courses and the use of the Canvas Commons.

Canvas Commons items do not indicate if they have an LTI attached that will attempt to install if imported. (Note: Only LTIs that don’t require a Secret/Key will install with no intervention.)

This has security and privacy implications.

Add Syllabus to the Teacher App

We are encouraging staff to use the Teacher App, but it does not include the Syllabus page. UC uses the Syllabus page as the default home page for all teaching sites, so not having this accessible through the app is an inconsistent experience for staff who have created the Syllabus page in their teaching site. This is a feature request already on the Community. Please vote it up to get alignment between the functionality of the app and the browser version of Canvas!

Add modules to the Teacher app

We are encouraging staff to use the Teacher App but it does not include the Modules. UC uses modules to organise content and progression through a unit, so not having this accessible via the app is an inconsistent experience for staff who have created a module in their teaching site. We have created a feature request already on the Community. Please vote it up to get alignment between the functionality of the app and the browser version of Canvas.
