This one page handout is designed to help teachers or professors who are training, or mentoring colleagues on how to get started with Canvas.  There are varied levels and just some simple tips and tricks of where to start and what to create first.


Just the Basics... Nothing too Crazy!


Calendar Features and Syllabus

  • Adding Events and Assignments directly on the Calendar
    • Create placeholders for each of your assignments and publish them immediately so students can at least view what is coming.
  • Drag and Drop Features of Calendar
    • Need to make a quick adjustment because you are ahead of schedule or behind schedule
  • Self Populating Syllabus
    • Set your homepage as the Course Syllabus, the dynamic syllabus will automatically populate.  You have the ability to add in a Course Description, Course Objectives and Personal Contact information through the Rich Content Editor.

Outcome:  Educators will be able to set up an event and an assignment using the Calendar.  Educators will be able to survey the uses of Syllabus and Calendar features from Canvas.

    • Delay Postings
  • Creating an Announcement

Outcome: Educators will be able to create an announcement in the course.

  • Assignments
    • Assignment Groups
      • Setting up Categories of types of assessments and then determining if you would like to weigh the groups.
  • Create an Assignment and Publish
    • Determine how students will submit this assignment, point value, and reporting type to the gradebook and if differentiation is necessary.

Outcome: Educators will be able to create an Assignment, attach a value to the assignment.

Quizzes and Surveys

  • Quizzes
    • Question Banks
      • The importance of labeling questions and then organizing questions or where imported questions reside.
  • How to Create a Quiz
    • Quiz Settings
    • Question Types

Outcome: Educators will be able to design an assessment using the Quizzes feature.
