tl;dr - Community Blogs and Events have some great new enhancements.

As Canvas continues to evolve and bring us great New Features & functionality, so do other great companies like Jive Software! Jive is the platform upon which we have built the Canvas Community and every quarter they provide us with great new features and updates. Usually these updates are rather subtle, but Jive's latest release brings us some exciting changes that you will start to see, and be able to use, throughout the community!

 

Among the many great changes, two of the obvious enhancements can be found in Blogs and Events.  Both of these content types allow authors to add a beautiful banner at the top of their blog post. The avatar of the author will be inset directly beneath the banner image. Images will also be left or right justified, against the margin, depending whether you float the image left or right. We're really excited about this update! (Click the example screenshot on the right!)

 

Now let's get into the Pro-tips

 

Adding Banner Image to Blogs & Events:

 

tl:dr - Find a stunning image. Crop to 1280x400 (width by height)

 

STEP 1: GET YOUR IMAGE

The most important thing to consider when adding banner images to your blog posts and events are the dimensions of the image you will add. Ideally you have a high resolution image in mind, that you would like to use. You can also use great online resources to find awesome (non-cheesy) stock art. Here are some of my favorite sources to find stunning imagery, most of which are free for commercial use and do not require attribution:

STEP 2: CROP YOUR IMAGE

After you've determined the image you'd like to use you, you'll need to crop it to the optimal dimensions of 1280px (width) by 400px (height). Here's a great tool (Fotor) that you can use to crop images online without having to use a more powerful, yet complex app like Photoshop or the similar free/open source editor, GIMP.

STEP 3: ADD YOUR IMAGE TO THE BLOG/EVENT

Create an EVENT  or  Create a BLOG  and add your image to the header of the blog post!

      1. Click the "Add a banner image" link right above the title of the Event or Blog
      2. Choose the file that you have cropped to dimension ratio of 1280x400 pixels
      3. Leave the position selection as "Centered" (or feel free to try other positions to see if you prefer the other look/feel)

      4. Once selected, your image will be applied!

Floating images left/right in your Blogs & Events:

STEP 1: ADD AN IMAGE TO YOUR BLOG/EVENT

      1. Place your cursor where you would like your image to appear.
        Note: If you want the image to float on the right side of the page, place your cursor at the beginning of the left margin, at the location where you want the image to appear, on the right.
      2. Make sure you are in the rich content editor (RCE) view. You can either use the little image Monosnap 2016-04-28 11-42-48.png icon in the RCE toolbar and follow the prompts to upload your image, or can click/hold an image on your computer, then drag/drop it into the RCE workspace.

 

STEP 2: FLOAT THE IMAGE

By default, images will appear in-line with your text. You can also float an image so it appears to the right, or left of your textual content. Once the image is on your workspace it might not be in the exact location that you'd like.

      1. Click the image and it will appear highlighted
      2. Click the image a second time and you will see an image icon  Monosnap 2016-04-28 12-02-03.png
      3. Click the image icon and hover over the following options to see the different options.
      4. Select "Float Right" or "Float Left" depending on where you would like your image to appear next to the text.
      5. If your image is not appearing exactly where you'd like, you can click/hold and drag/drop the image to the height of the page where you want it to appear.
        1. After selecting and dragging the image, you will faintly see a cursor behind the transparent image, which indicates where you are placing the images.
        2. Remember that even if you want the image to appear on the right side of the screen, you will want to click/hold and drag the cursor to the far left side of the row/line where you want the image to appear on the right.

 

STEP 3: ADJUST IMAGE SIZE

After placing the image in its optimal location, you may resize it by first clicking the image, then clicking and dragging, inward or outward, one of the little squares on the corners of your image!
