On Mac, when using Respondus LockDown Browser, students can't use the default key commands (Control-SPACE or Command-SPACE) to switch keyboard language input. They might need this when taking a test for a language class.


Tell students to change the keyboard shortcut to something else (we found using the CAPS-LOCK works).


Starting in macOS Sierra (10.12) by default you can switch between languages with Control-SPACE while previously it was Command-SPACE. Command-SPACE is now "Show Spotlight Search" which is restricted in LockDown Browser (understandably).


To change the keyboard shortcut go to: System Preferences, Keyboard, Input Sources, Shortcuts, and you can change which key commands cycle through the "input source" or "input menu" - this may be different for different version of macOS, so do some Google searches to figure it out.


NOTE: This only affects the Mac version of LockDown browser, not Windows. Hopefully, Respondus will fix this in future versions, but this work-around will do the trick for now.


I'm just posting this for others' benefit. We've figured it out... but it took a while. Hopefully I've included enough key words in here to help someone out in the future. I plan to notify Respondus.

GDPR: Things get changed


The former EU internet security legislation was adopted in 1995, however, at some point existing regulations were no longer able to ensure private data protection.


The outdated legislation that was too open for the interpretation, overloaded businesses with administrative costs and needed drastic changes to meet the new demands and challenges related to cyber security.  


The substantial changes that bring new GDPR legislation will officially come to the enforcement on 25 May 2018, globally affecting all organizations that gather and process EU citizens user data.


Empowered by the new GDPR regulations, the users will be granted more control and access to their personal data:


Protected by default. The concept of privacy “by design or “by default” means that  a personal data protection should be a central point of every software creation, build-in on the very first stage of designing.


Businesses processing personal data must use technologies that meet the strictest security standards, otherwise, they will be penalized by the data protection authorities.


Permanent erasure.  The users can withdraw the personal data usage agreement once provided by them to the company.


Transparency. The companies must fully notify users how their personal data will be managed, including total transparency in cases, when the private data has been compromised or leaked due to the cyber attacks or technical issues.  


Portability. The personal data should be portable so that users could easily transmit or gain access to it.

Step 2. Open “Courses” section and create a new course with assignments.

Step 3. Open an existing course with assignments and submitted students’ papers.

           Step 4. Go to “Settings” and pick “Copy this Course”.


         Step 5. In “Copy this Course” tab, fill in “Name” and “Course Code”(any), and click “Create Course”.

* The course will be copied together with assignments (apart from submitted student papers and students database). It will also have default Unicheck Settings.


Step 6. To invite students to a newly created course, go to “People” section, click “+People” button and fill in the emails of students in the pop-up window.


   Step 7. Go to settings of a newly generated assignment. In "Plagiarism Review" section, you’ll find default Unicheck settings. Modify if needed.

Abstract: The hardest part about contract cheating is quantifying the problem. We can't do much about the former, but we're trying to change the latter. That is, we are trying to quantify contract cheating in hopes of learning more about assessment design, motivations of cheating, and the black market of 'contract cheating'. 


Methodology: A web crawler (with the pet name of "Contraband") was let loose on the Internet to sniff out content related to cheating posts. The contracts were then aggregated all together. You can read what the crawler found at the end of this post.


Findings: 18% contractors were approached directly. Out of the posts in which the contractor was not approached directly, 6 (4.5%) contracts were for admission essays, 9 posts (7%) were for work related to masters/PhD theses, and 7 posts (5.34%) were in languages other than English. Almost all of the contracts looked like they required undergrad (or above) proficiency. Finally, the average contract was worth $157. 


It is to be noted, that the crawler (optimistically) scanned  ~1% of the entire "market" and the data collected covered just 3 weeks worth of activity. It might be unfair to simply extrapolate these numbers to arrive at the 'market size', but let's just do it for simplicity's sake.


If 1% of the market is worth $25,353, it implies roughly $2.5 million worth of contracts traded per month. This might sound like a lot, but an average contract value of $157 per contract would mena that roughly 16,148 students cheat online every month.


Future direction: Firstly, I want to expand the corpus we are crawling. Secondly, adding in more data-points such as: collecting the number of bidders (therefore quantifying the size and activity of the market), analyzing peak/trough times, and estimating the writing proficiency of the cheater (low writing proficiency might suggest weak writing skills as a prominent motivator) seems interesting.  Also, the labeling process definitely needs to be improved (since there were some false positives).

Do you remember the time when you were a student? How did you identify yourself? Were you a “quiet achiever”, “know-it-all”, or careless “day dreamer”? The bets are high you can still remember your biggest class epic fails, assignments you secretly hated because you were not as smart as that annoying kid with a strange surname.


Ironically, failure syndrome is terrorizing even “super achievers” too. The reaction to failure is different, what appears to be motivating for one student may turn to be paralyzing for another.


We all have different perceptions and learning ways. For online education, where teachers’ actions are rather limited, it is especially important to support students who often flunk tests.


The way failures affect student’s mind


What can be worse than failing a test? Only failing a high-stakes test. Once, the Stanford's staff wrongly informed students about test failing, sure thing for the science sake, but what came out was far from expected.


Over 80% of studied group projected emotional reactions that looked nothing like productive studying mood: embarrassment, lack of motivation and procrastination.


Everyone speaks and writes about the importance of personal motivation nowadays. But remember how it used to be. Sometimes it’s hard to find motivation, sometimes motivation finds you, but as a rule, it’s too late for a project. Why does this happen? Let’s find out from the common root-cause factors.


Common root-cause factors of failures


The study revealed that the most widespread psychological reasons of failures are: bad study habits, distracting external factors, unclear instructions and again fear of judgment.


The teacher is the main motivator and influencer in the class. The fixed mindset is what often passes from teacher to student, meaning that obstacles in learning are wrongly associated with general abilities required for the subject, rather than individual talents.


The teachers applying a flexible approach encourage learning process, treating each mistake as an opportunity to learn. Other problems they easily solve with explanations, clarifications, and special practices.


Applying practices from best colleges


The key ingredient for educating students should be a sense of emotional safety and control over task performing, in which failures are the components of learning progress. In the best colleges around the world, the education is more tailored to the individual learning patterns. This is done especially for students having problems in learning. Some of them are described in more detail down below.


Problem #1

No analysis, no self-contribution. The student finally submits a paper, but there’s no analysis or critical thinking in it.


Solution. Clarify the value of individually conducted research, encourage sharing personal opinion even if it doesn’t blend with other students. Create templates for assignments that would include the field with “outcomes” or the one where students describe how they understand the collected data, how it can be applied and what improvements can be suggested.


Problem #2

Cheating/plagiarism. “It’s just your word against his word, - which you claim is your word”. In the Wikipedia era, it seems only the lazy one doesn’t cheat.


Solution. First of all, teach students how to cite and reference and highlight the importance of it, as sometimes plagiarism is unintentional. The most effective way against cheating is prevention.


Make an individual version of the test for each student, notify them that each variant will be different, this way you can eliminate the temptation for cheating. Specify what can be considered as plagiarism and ensure submissions are authentic with a plagiarism checker. 


Problem #3

Mistakes, poor formatting. When it comes to preparing a serious project, inattentiveness is frustrating. It negatively affects students marks  even of the smartest students.


Solution. Create and share a document that would guide students across all the stages of the assignment accomplishment. If the information needs to meet certain standards, - like APA, MLA or Harvard formatting provide appropriate sources to the official sites. In case university uses a custom format provide the link where the student can look up for them. Tools that can be used for eliminating grammar and spelling errors will be useful too.


Provide timely feedback and encourage making tweaks independently, only this way students can realize which typical errors and misspellings are chasing them.


Problem #4

Missing the data. Every human being is often forgetful and unintentionally misses a good chunk of essential information. Sometimes, sequence of events is mixed up, so articles, novel or story rendering is distorted.


Solution. Teach students how to create and use checklists. Allow them to use special outlines if they need to render a big part of the book.


Just like your average “to do-list”, checklist is a plan of action that is structured in the bullet points or sequenced by numbers, according to the priority of the action.


If the assignment is big and complicated it can be built in the form of tasks and subtasks, smaller chunks will make it look more manageable. Each point of the checklist can include a particular estimated time, f.g you can allow 45 min. time frame for the essay writing and 20 min. for the revision, this will help students stay more organized.


Checklists are also good for writing and remembering information. Checklist for authors usually include facts, questions to address, and keywords that uncover main ideas.


Problem #5

Lack of understanding. Right, the problem is usually followed by the word “math”. Some students lose motivation if the solution method is not 100% understood, while others hand in blank pages.


Solution. Avoid giving assignments unless all students show the method used is clear to everyone. Create test assignments to check their understanding first, and only after that assign a final one.


Math is an interesting discipline and there’s a way to show it to the class. Show students that the problem can be solved differently. The more ways will be discussed and tried the deeper their understanding of the topic will be.


Bottom line


Being a good teacher is like trying to fly an airplane while building it, - it's challenging and there will never be an end for improvements. Nevertheless, you can be a true mentor, true master Yoda for students, inspiring them, teaching how to overcome hardships in studying and how to apply the learned material. The main point is to let them see how they can control the situation and work on it, this will dispel their fears and help them find the path from failure to knowledge.

Educators and Unicheck’s Ninja Mode


In essence, the two-click integration can be explained as Unicheck’s full potential in ninja mode. That means that now Unicheck works in Canvas like martial arts pro, providing top results in a laconic and beautiful way.

Let’s see what options have been enabled by our ninja to make teachers’ experience with Unicheck better.


When creating an assignment, an educator needs to choose Submission Type (Online) in the fallout menu, and tick File Uploads. Then, he or she should choose Unicheck Plagiarism Checker in the field Plagiarism Review.

It is useful in cases when educators need papers checked on some occasions. If there no need to check a particular assignment, they just don’t tick.

Now teachers are also able to configure settings before each assignment. These settings are:

  • Exclude submissions from Library (most useful for draft assignments)
  • Exclude citations and references from plagiarism search (which contributes to the higher originality score)
  • Sensibility settings (it can set sensibility in percent or words)

It is very convenient as it gives teachers power to fine-tune Unicheck to the special needs of each assignment.

Features like pre-checks and submitting on behalf of students have been removed as redundant. Resubmit option will be available as a Canvas native feature.

Storing Papers

Deep Integration now works in such a way that allows all submitted papers to be stored directly in Canvas, and thus making it possible to download all submitted files in one click by hitting Download Submissions.


Yes, it is true. Unicheck is now fully compatible with DocViewer and all papers checked by Unicheck open in DocViewer retaining its full operational potential.

The similarity score appears in DocViewer in the top right corner as a neat green button and shows the percentage of the similarity in the text. If a teacher desires to view the report in a greater detail, the little icon with percentage is clickable, and takes the teacher to the report, in its classical form.


The way teachers can review performance in Grades has changed as well. Now, for each submitted and checked assignment there is a flag with a color code. Flags can be in four colors:

  • Blue is for papers with 0% similarity found, and all citations and references properly formatted;
  • Green indicates small or insubstantial similarity detected, with anything up to 20%;
  • Yellow is reserved for medium level of similarity;
  • Red signifies large percentage of 80 and more.



The flag is clickable and allows teachers to have a detailed view of the entry, and to leave comments. Teachers can click on the percentage to view the report.

Rubrics and Peer Review

It is now possible to create assignments using Rubrics and Peer Review and such assignments will be checked by Unicheck.


Admins and Ninja in Action


When it comes to integrations, admins should receive credit where it is due, and here is good news for them: the installation process has gotten easier.

Integration works through LTI 2 and takes one click: admins now need only url registration. It is super simple: just go to the Integrations tab in Unicheck’s account and click on the Copy button.

Here at Unicheck (former Unplag) we try to keep in touch with educators. It’s not just the feedback on our similarity checker that we want to know.

Our objective is to learn the needs teachers have, and in what ways we can make your routines easier, faster and less tiresome.

Today we would like to address what is absurdly both the most looked for and most ignored topic: the similarity report.

When the papers are submitted, and the similarity check is complete, what happens then? What do you do next, and how helpful can the similarity report be in grading papers?

Purpose of Similarity Report

The first thing we would like to say is that similarity score is not a grade; neither is it a recommendation for the grade.

Similarity report provides a statistical number that shows the percent of similarity in the paper. It is left completely for educators to decide if any particular paper was plagiarized or not.

We at Unicheck understand the crucial need for student-teacher communication; we also know the true value of human factor in education. That is why our report’s only purpose is to show

  • how much of the text is original
  • how much of the text is made of citations
  • how many references were used, and
  • how much of the text was found to be identical to online or library sources and databases (if integrated).

The report shows this information to the fullest extent and provides accurate and reliable results. Unicheck’s purpose is to inspire, not place blame; Unicheck’s ambition is to become educator’s helper and reference, transforming once a cumbersome and exhausting ordeal into a simple and swift pattern.

Unicheck’s Interface in Canvas

When students submit their papers, Unicheck as an LTI, checks them automatically. To find a similarity report on each paper, you need to go to the Assignment in Canvas and click on the “Student view” button near each student’s name.

After you press the button, a fallout table will be displayed with several columns:

  • Attempt.

This is a student submission counter. The number displayed will change accordingly if a student re-submits the paper.

  • Document.

This is the similarity report itself. You can click on it to view it in the Canvas interface. Read on to find out more details on the similarity report below.

  • ID.

This is a unique serial number of this particular report.

  • Similarity.

Educators can see the similarity score right away, without having to open the similarity report. This score is a percentage of the text that Unicheck has determined as identical with online or library sources and databases (if integrated). It can be any number from 0% (no similarities detected, text is fully original) to 100% (a complete match with sources, and no original text is present).

  • Grade.

This cell usually shows “0.0”. Educators can grade the paper right here, or they can do it in the report itself. The grade will automatically appear in Grades.

  • Submission date.

It shows the exact time when the paper has been submitted.

Meaning of Similarity Report

Similarity report contains detailed information on the checked paper.

There are two ways to view it:

  1. In the Canvas interface directly, by clicking on the highlighted link under the Document column as shown on the screenshot;
  2. On your computer in a separate .pdf file. To download it, press the “Generate Report” button, and when the caption has changed to “Download Report”, press it again.

This screenshot shows the report viewed in Canvas. The report is divided in two halves. On the left-hand side is the paper itself, with the color highlights in the body of the text. On the right-hand side is a panel with information on originality and similarity scores, percent of references and citations, list of all sources, citations and references. Unicheck gives teachers a possibility to exclude any of sources, citations and references from the percentage calculations manually in the report.

There is a special color code that Unicheck uses to mark the paper for better navigation. Yellow highlight marks similar text; blue marks citations; purple is used for references; original text is not marked at all.

We also use red color if our checker has detected similar characters from other alphabets in the text. This trick can sometimes be used to fool similarity checkers, yet Unicheck is immune to such maneuvers.

The report also allows you to comment on any part of the report for student’s attention. For that, press the “Commenting mode” button.

The downloaded report will include the same information as its online version, but the used sources will be listed at the beginning of the document.

Catching Cheaters

Recently my students, feeling the pressure of the end of the school year, discovered how to send completed assignments to each other and submit them as their own into canvas.  Does Canvas have a feature that automatically looks at file name and discover duplicates?  I have to download all submissions then use the search feature to find duplicate files from two or more students.  An automated search for duplicate files would be great. cheaters

At Instructurecon 2016, I had a long talk with Turnitin representatives Micah Arons (sales) and Gary Finnigan (product). Several of their comments were interesting, so I thought I would share some highlights with the community:

Network Stability: Turnitin products that use the older Turnitin API are inefficient by today’s standards and cause instability for all Turnitin products. The current products, such as the Turnitin LTI tool use newer, more efficient coding. When the older API gets retired, users should see less downtime and more responsiveness across Turnitin products. However, Turnitin keeps extending the sunset date for the older API due to customer request.

LTI Standard: The LTI standard is new. The first version of LTI was released in 2010, and version 2.0 was released in 2014. Working with Instructure, Turnitin  is helping to develop the LTI standard. As they develop the Turnitin LTI, they have found the existing LTI standard needs development and are developing the standard while also working to improve Turnitin specifically.

Company Growth and Reorganization: Turnitin has experienced recent growth, and to meet the demand, they have recently reorganized their teams to be faster and more responsive.

Agile: The company has not embraced a strict adherence to Agile Software Development, but they have moved in that direction. By looking at the Turnitin release notes, we can see that releases are occurring frequently. One of my favorite recent improvements is that instructors no longer need to initiate assignments in Turnitin when using the LTI; instead, the first student to access the assignment from Canvas will initiate the assignment with the instructor’s saved default settings.

I am not a journalist; I took no notes. I am not a coder; a few things in the conversation were beyond my knowledge. Still, the reps were nice and receptive to concerns from the Canvas community. They knew who I was and knew about Canvas and Turnitin They said they read community forums for their LMS integrations. They said they read the Canvas forums. I know Micah reads them and has for years because he has emailed and called me occasionally as far back as 2014 when the Turnitin LTI first came out.

Canvas and Turnitin

Turnitin is well known for plagiarism and integrates with Canvas when an institution purchases a Trurnitin subscription. Many instructors rely on services for plagiarism education, prevention, and detection. Turnitin is also a valuable tool for grading and peer reviews. Turnitin currently integrates with Canvas in two different ways, but Turnitin is phasing out the older method.


The oldest Turnitin integration with canvas is known as the API integration. Currently, Turnitin is phasing out this older integration, but still offers support to schools who are not having a good experience with the LTI.  


The newer method of using Turnitin is the LTI tool. Turnitin’s page for the LTI tool includes the official Admin, Instructor, and Student Guides

Canvas has also developed a more robust framework for plagiarism detection services: Spring Cleaning Is Coming: Plagiarism-Detection Improvements Headed Your Way! Turnitin has announced that they will be continuing the LTI plugin while also developing a new plugin using the framework canvas is developing. The target release for the new plugin is Fall 2017. This new plugin promises Turnitin assignment creation within Canvas's interface for those who wish to use Canvas for most operations but would like an originality report from Turnitin. Users who wish to grade in Turnitin or use Peermark will wish to use the LTI version. However, Turnitin says institutions will be able to run both the LTI and the new plugin simultaneously. 


What is "Feedback Studio"?

Feedback studio is the name for an interface overhaul for Turnitin that took place in mid 2016. You can see an interactive tour and demonstration of the interface (Note the ability to use bold, underline, italics and hotlinked text in Grademark comments).  The materials in this blog now refer to feedback Studio, but only Grademark and originality reports have been incorporated into Feedback Studio. Peermark and its interface has not changed at this time.


Does Feedback Studio alter any functionality?

Yes, but the changes only affect the grading functionality of Turnitin.  As of May 23, 2016, the ability to view the complete list of Grademark comments is missing. For students, the implementation of rubrics in Feedback Studio is clunky as I discuss in this video:

Thankfully, Turnitin is listening and refining Feedback Studio. As of early 2017, the ability to search for quick marks while grading has been restored.


As a local Canvas Administrator, how do I configure the Turnitin LTI?

There are multiple sets of instructions with varying levels of detail for local canvas Administrators on the Turnitin website. Here is the best set of instructions, and here is the current configuration of the Turnitin LTI at the account level for my school:


1. Name the configuration.

2. The consumer key is provided to your account by Turnitin.

3. The launch url is provided by Turnitin and is the same for all institutions. The launch url for Turnitin UK Users is

4. Completing the domain field with "" ("" for UK users) enables Turnitin to launch from the Canvas speedgrader report icons.

5. Setting the privacy to public allows Canvas to share student names and emails with Turnitin.

6. Turnitin documentation states that the Custom Fields may be left blank. However, adding the code developed by canvas engineers adds several convenient features that sync information between canvas and Turnitin so that instructors do not need to enter information in both Canvas and Turnitin, including due dates, assignment id's, assignment titles, points possible, and availability dates. The graphic depicts all of the available codes.

Can my institution enable both the API version and the LTI version as we transition to the LTI?

Turnitin has offered varying answers on this question. The latest answer is yes. In an email sent to local Turnitin instructors on 4-11-2016, Turnitin states, "For those who are wondering, it is possible to run the legacy Canvas integration and Canvas LTI integration in parallel during the transition period."


What happens to API enabled assignments when the API version gets shut off?

In an email sent to local Turnitin instructors on 4-11-2016, Turnitin states, "When the previous Canvas integration becomes unavailable, classes and assignments originally created through the previous integration will remain accessible by logging into Turnitin directly. These older classes and assignments will not be visible in the LTI integration."  Although, I believe this access is limited to Turnitin administrators.


On the Canvas side, The API enabled assignments stay in Canvas and all Canvas functionality remains intact when the Turnitin API gets turned off. Submissions and grading in Canvas persists in Canvas once you turn off the API; only the link to Turnitin is lost, which means losing direct access to originality reports and any grading done in Turnitin. Although, with the API turned off and LTI turned on, you can currently see the icons and percent in the speedgrader for past assignments. If you try to click on the icon, you get this error message:



The text "Turnitin has been enabled for this assignment" persists in Canvas assignments when the API has been turned off but the LTI tool has not been turned on for that assignment even if the course is copied for a new term Of course, there is no way of knowing if this will change once Turnitin phases out the API altogether.


An instructor who wants to preserve grading in Turnitin from the API version for personal access, must save the grading as a .pdf one paper at a time before the API gets turned off. Originality reports can be saved one at a time, or reports can be reproduced by resubmitting the file to Turnitin and disregarding the first submission when interpreting the originality report.


When we turned on the LTI, I converted my existing assignments to use the LTI without issue.



Do teachers and students have to sign up for an account at

No one absolutely needs to create a separate Turnitin account. The tool uses the email address in the user's Canvas profile as an identifier, and log in from Canvas is seamless even for first time users. However, the instructor cannot use the Canvas test student for testing the LTI tool because the test student does not include a profile and email address. When I started using the LTI, I had a previous Turnitin account under the same email my Canvas profile uses, so the tool recognized me and put all submissions into my preexisting account.


If an instructor accessed Turnitin for the first time in the LTI and then later had a desire or need to access information in the web interface at, the instructor can go through the forgotten password process at to set up a password and then can begin to use the webinterface. It is probably advisable for an instructor to have access to the interface for using the iPad app, submitting for students at, managing rubrics and saved grading comments, etc.



Does the LTI version of Turnitin have feature X?

Yes! All of the major Turnitin features are present in the LTI version, including originality reports and grading (with reusable comments, rubrics, etc.) through Feedback Studio, e-rater (automated comments), grade anything (PowerPoint Excel, etc.),  peer review (in Peermark), ios app, and cloud submit.


How does an instructor set up an assignment using the LTI tool?

Instructors add Turnitin as an external app to an assignment. This video demonstrates the process (assuming you have enabled the custom codes in your LTI configuration for Turnitin:


When creating an assignment, should I load Turnitin in a new tab?

I prefer to use a new tab, but there are pros and cons to both approaches. Probably the most important thing is to be consistent on your campus to avoid confusing students. Here is a video showing what each option looks like:


Update:  As of June 30, 2016, Instructors must no longer launch a Turnitin assignment to initiate the assignment in Turnitin. The Turnitin release notes state, "Students can now launch into an assignment and trigger its creation; this relieves instructors from being forced to have first interaction with the assignment before students are able to submit." However, the instructor must set an available from date and a due date in Canvas to allow students to initialize an assignment.


How do students submit to a Turnitin LTI assignment?

You will need two assignments in Canvas / Turnitin. The first assignment will be for students to submit drafts and critique each other with Peermark. Note that only the grade on the paper in Grademark gets passed back to the canvas gradebook, so if you want to grade Peer reviews, you can add reviews into the paper grade (what I do), or you can set up an assignment with no submission and manually enter grades for the peer reviews:



How does the grading work?


An instructor can choose to grade using Turnitin's Grademark or Canvas's Speedgrader.


I do all of my grading in Turnitin's Grademark. I use the Quickmarks (saved comments I can reuse) with a rubric and enter the grade in Turnitin. The grade gets passed to the Gradebook in Canvas. It actually works quite a bit like the Canvas Speedgrader, and you can advance from student to student as well as quickly flip through all of a student's submissions for the term. I prefer Turnitin's Grademark because I can save and reuse remarks (with clickable url's!). Turnitin also can layer the originality report and Grademark, so the instructor can see the originality report while grading. Unlike the older API plugin, Quickmarks, rubrics, and PeerMark libraries persist across Canvas courses, so there is no need for importing or exporting Turnitin assets after the initial use.


As of the August 29, 2015 update, the student submits the paper to Turnitin, and Turnitin sends a copy of the paper to Canvas. The copy of the paper in Canvas may be graded in the Speedgrader, but if you wish to use a Canvas rubric, you must add the rubric to the assignment before configuring the assignment submission as an external tool.


How do students receive their feedback?

Here is a tutorial for receiving instructor feedback through Grademark. If the instructor chooses to grade in the Canvas speedgrader, then the process is the same as it is for any other Canvas assignment except that the student can also click on the Turnitin icon to view her originality report.


How can I tell if my students have viewed their feedback?


If you use Grademark for grading, you can access the Turnitin inbox through the link on your Canvas assignment:

In the image above of a Turnitin assignment inbox, the eye icon indicates a student who has viewed feedback. The dots are students who have not seen the feedback.

Will Turnitin send a grade from Turnitin to the Canvas Gradebook?

Yes! Grades entered in Turnitin automatically get posted to the Canvas grade book. However, this is a one way link. Grades posted in Canvas do not show up in Turnitin.  


Can I use the Turnitin iPad app to grade?

I use it all of the time! In fact, the iPad Turnitin app does something nothing else does right now: you can download papers to the iPad and grade them without an Internet connection, using a rubric and Quickmarks (saved and reusable comments). Then, when you hit wifi again, the papers sync back to Turnitin (and therefore to Canvas).


Where can I see the originality report for a paper?

Icons for the originality report show up in the Canvas speedgrader and gradebook.  The full report can be seen by clicking on the icon in the speedgrader or accessing the LTI tool from the Canvas assignment or through the Turnitin iPad app.


What happens when I copy a course in Canvas?

The assignment, settings, instructions, and dates persist in Canvas when an instructor copies a course for a new term.The LTI assignment must be visited (if you load TII inside of Canvas or the LTI tool must be launched (if you load in a new tab) to reestablish the assignment and settings on the Turnitin side. Now, a student can access the assignment from Canvas to initialize the assignment in Turnitin; However, the instructor must set an available from date and a due date in Canvas to allow students to initialize an assignment.



How can I use Turnitin with an essay question on a Canvas Quiz to get an originality report?

There are two options.


The first option is to use a file upload question in the quiz. This allows students to upload a file in response to the question, and the instructor can bulk download the files from the quiz as documented in How do I create a File Upload quiz question?.  Once the students' files are downloaded in a zip file, the instructor could upload the zip file to the Submitting via quick submit on Turnitin's website. This is one good reason for instructors to set up accounts through Turnitin's interface and enable the quick submit in their settings.


The second option is to use essay questions in the quiz. After the students complete the quiz, the instructor can generate an item analysis. Download the item analysis and open it. Next, locate the column with the essay responses you wish to scan, and it helps here if you can search for a key word to locate the column. I always include the word "essay" in my essay questions, which lets me locate the columns I need quickly. Next, copy the column and submit it to Turnitin via cut and paste with Submitting via quick submit

I want to check discussion posts for originality.

A feature request for using Turnitin on Canvas discussions is under review: Enable Turnitin for Discussion Posts. In the meantime, you can navigate to a discussion, select the entire page (ctrl A on Windows; Command A on Mac). Next, use Submitting via quick submit  on Turnitin's website and paste in the text. Some text you may not want will be included like the discussion prompts and your discussion replies to students, but if you can live with that, you can batch scan the posts, and what you copy even includes each student's name, so you know who wrote each post:


I want to use the Turnitin LTI but need a Canvas rubric for grading / assessment

Create your assignment as a Canvas assignment without linking it to Turnitin. Save the assignment. Add your rubric to the assignment, and edit the assignment to enable Turnitin. I



Can Students submit to Turnitin LTI assignments from the Canvas mobile apps?

Not at this time. As per Canvas iOS app and External Apps(LTI), Turnitin needs to make its LTI tool fully compatible for a mobile environment. However, it is possible for students to submit essays by using the browser on their mobile device. Additionally, Turnitin's iPad app supports student use for submitting papers  and viewing feedback. For students to gain access to the iPad app, they should go through the password recovery process after accessing Turnitin at least once through the canvas integration.


Are there any complications with the Turnitin LTI tool?

There is some loss of Canvas functionality that may affect some instructors:

  • Turnitin assignments will only accept one file per assignment.
  • Using differentiated due dates as documented inHow do I assign an Assignment to an individual student or course section? breaks date syncing with Turnitin because Turnitin can only handle one set of dates per assignment. As a workaround, an instructor could set a date in Turnitin that corresponds with the last date in Canvas, allowing all groups to submit to the same assignment, but this only works if your school is not using the custom codes to automatically sync due dates with Turnitin.  Alternatively, an instructor could set up multiple assignments, releasing each assignment only to one subset of students.
  • If an instructor wishes to alter a Canvas rubric on a Turnitin assignment, she must Turn off the LTI to alter the rubric and then reinstate the LTI when done editing the rubric. Warning: disabling the LTI after students have submitted will severe the connection between Canvas and the LTI; you should only do this if students have not submitted.
  • It is not possible to use the Turnitin LTI (or any other external tool submission) with a Canvas group assignment; the option to assign to a group disappears as soon as "External Tool" is selected as the submission type.

I do not like something about the Turnitin LTI. Who should I make aware of my displeasure?

Most issues are going to be with Turnitin. File bug reports and give feedback at Turnitin - Support Wizard.  You can also contact your local Canvas admin to pass feedback to the Turnitin rep for your institution. I encourage you to do this. Let Turnitin know that Canvas users want and deserve their attention. Turnitin is a great product, but it is also an expensive one. Get the most for your money by getting your feedback to the right folks.


However, it is also true that Canvas and Turnitin are working together, and Instructure Employees have initiated discussions on the following known issues:

Turnitin + Canvas: submissions appearing on the wrong assignment

Turnitin + Canvas issue: "Resubmit to Turnitin" button occasionally results in submission getting stuck in pending

Turnitin + Canvas: Allow teachers to resubmit on behalf of students

Canvas + Turnitin: Retreive TII originality score again after due date has passed
