Setting to manage minimum time between allowed quiz attempts

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

As an instructor, I'd like a setting whereby I can set a minimum number of minutes or days between allowed quiz attempts. Ideally this setting could be varied by section or individual. So, for instance, I could allow two quiz attempts but specify that a user must wait 24 hours after submitting their first attempt to begin the next.

Yes, this would be great! We had it with our previous LMS and it was used often by instructors.

Please do this. I want students to have the opportunity for repeated testing over a period of time -- like take a quiz three times, once per day, over three days, and keep the highest score.

Yes we need this feature! We want students to have spaced retrieval rather than cramming the night before the exam. If we can set a "waiting period" or "study period" in between each quiz attempt we can help them study better. The multiple attempts are great but if we can't set a time to study in between then they just take them again and again with no time in between for thought and reflection. We know this time in between is crucial for learning and we don't want to encourage the cramming for the exam.

Panda-Cat: A mythical creature that we dreamed up to catch your attention, make you laugh, and encourage you to keep reading the explanation of our archive process for Feature Ideas

Archive: An archived Feature Idea is not dead forever, but it has been taken out of stage progression.  When Community members submit feature ideas they are reviewed by the Community Team and then put to a vote by the community at large.  If the idea does not receive 100 votes within 3 months it will be archived.  Ideas that reach the 100 vote threshold within the first three months remain open for voting. Find more information about this process at How does the voting process work for feature ideas?

Can archived ideas still become a feature?  Yes.  Some feature ideas that do not receive 100 votes are resubmitted by Community members and find more supporters as people's needs change, rising more quickly to the top.  Oftentimes archived feature ideas are evaluated in groups when we are preparing to refactor a particular tool or feature of Canvas and may still influence product direction.

We had an instructor request to have this feature request resubmitted:

Nicole,

I really want this feature, it is very important for student learning. I think we need to put the idea out there again.
