I would like my students to be able to portray research data from excel into a formatted discussion thread.
Hi Marci Campbell Welcometo the Canvas Community! I think this may already be possible in a few different ways if I understand correctly. First, I pasted some data from MS Excel into a discussion thread and it was inserted as an HTML table in the Rich Content Editor (What is the Rich Content Editor? and How do I use the HTML view in the Rich Content Editor as an instructor?).
Second, I believe I could have accomplished something a bit more sophisticated with live data and updating formulas if I had used an online spreadsheet solution such as Excel Online or Google Sheets. Last time I checked, both of these had an option to embed a view of their data with some controls included. Perhaps someone with more experience can comment on that.
Is there some additional functionality in specific that you are looking for? I want to make sure I understand your idea as best as possible before processing it so I am placing it in moderation and look forward to hearing back from you. Thanks again for taking the time to join the Community and share how things are going!
Working with HTML tables can present a few accessibility considerations. Here is a resource from one of my favorite accessibility sites, WebAIM: Creating Accessible Tables - Data Tables.
Oh, and here is a screenshot of what it looked for me when I pasted that data in, and where the table controls are for adding things like "gridlines" (cell borders).
Did you get a chance to explore Adam's suggestions?
We did use the suggestions but it was not as easy as I would like the process to be. Most of the students uploaded a screenshot of their data. They didn't like the appearance of it and interaction on the discussion thread was less than I had hoped. I may wait to use the research data idea until I can find an easier process for the students to do it.
