I teach large, in-person classrooms where students receive paper assignments back. For privacy reasons, I cannot have them put their names on the front of the exams. So my university, the largest university in the USA (Arizona State University), uses a mechanism where the students can identify themselves with the last-4 digits of their student ID. These are uniquely identifying, but they are essentially anonymous. This allows me to quickly return exams in sorted piles at the front of the class before activities. It also makes entering the grades much quicker because it is easy to sort by number. When we had BlackBoard, I could create a "Last4" column where I imported these uniquely identifying ID's. I thought this might be possible with the "Notes" column in Canvas, but I discovered that "Notes" are not imported. So I have to manually enter hundreds of identifiers. Perhaps there is a way to create a hidden grade (out of 9999 points) that I can use, but a more elegant solution would be for Canvas to support importing of Notes (and multiple Notes columns, as requested elsewhere).
