Currently, even if you specify a section for an event, everyone in the course can see it. This is confusing to students in different sections of the same course.
Hi Alice Waldron. I was just testing this because according to How do I set a different event date for each section in a course calendar? it doesn't seem like that should happen. That lesson states:
If you don't want one section to see the event, leave the date and time fields blank.
When I tested this, the calendar event did not show up for the sections I did not set a date or time for on the student's calendar, however I was able to see it in the to-do list. Does this match what you are seeing?
I am going to place this idea in a moderation stage while I do some more research on this behavior and give you a chance to reply.
Hi Adam Williams, thanks for the quick response! That doesn't match what I'm seeing. We set our calendar events like that exactly, and students in other sections can see them. Here's the response I got when I chatted Canvas help:
( 5m 12s ) Taylor W: So events are course specific not section specific so if a event was made in a course with many sections enrolled all users in the course would see it. We do have our events set up the way you've described, but have heard from students that they can see other sections (and have a screen shot from a student showing this). Let me know if the screenshot or link to a specific event would be helpful. Thanks so much for looking into this!
Thanks for that additional information Alice. I am checking on this further. If you could provide a screenshot of how the event is set up with section-specific dates (and no dates/times for certain sections) and then where the students in the section with no date and time are seeing it, that would be very helpful!

OK, that is the To Do List where I noticed it as well. Can you confirm that viewing the calendar does not show the event? If you can confirm that, I can confirm that this is a known issue and a fix for it has already been implemented in Beta (which you can test out to verify the solution How do I access the Canvas beta environment as an instructor?) and should go to Production on the next release on 10/27.
