Teachers in my district would like the option to color code grading columns in their grade book for various reasons. Could there be an option in the column menu for a color?
Belinda, while this idea moves forward for voting, please consider how color-coding columns might make it difficult to use the status colors available for cells in the New Gradebook: How do I use the icons and colors in the New Gradebook? Instructors can modify the default colors by following the instructions in How do I change the color for a grading status in the New Gradebook?
So how would you envision colors for columns working alongside the existing functionality? Could you elaborate on the "various reasons" instructors would like to see this option implemented, and are they requesting this in the context of their experience using the New Gradebook? That might help our members to evaluate the idea.
Great question! The status colors could still be used. Maybe the grade column backgrounds could be various beige tones that would allow for the status colors to still be clearly seen. This would help teachers visually when looking at their gradebooks. For example, some teachers want every other column to be the same color so that they are easier to distinguish when scrolling across. Other teachers like to group things by formative, summative, unit, etc. While you can do this by assignment group, those groups don't show up any different from the other columns and sometimes you want to see more than just the one assignment group, but can't distinguish the groups without looking at the text. The option to lightly color columns would help in these situations.
