Our campus admins would like the ability to message an entire class. Currently, an instructor enrolled in a Canvas course is the only user able to message an entire class.
Susan, at my institution, when my admin team is asked to message an entire course, occasionally we enroll the admin who will be sending this message in a role in the course. Designer role works well here for that purpose, resulting in fewer student questions which should really go to a TA or teacher.
More frequently, we will post an Announcement rather than sending a message.
Our Sis is failing when we try to enroll admins into a course. We would have to do it manually which is becoming quite time consuming.
Got it, Susan. I voted!
Is this for sending "an announcement to message the entire class" OR is this for "using the conversation tool to message the entire class"?
As an Admin, I would rather use the Announcement Tool because I do not want students accidentally replying to a conversations message directly to me about something that is class related as I cannot help them with that. Also, with 60k+ students with a minimum of 7000 courses a semester it could quickly become unwieldy.
It would be to use the inbox tool outside of the course itself. It would have a subject related to the message and would only go out to one class.
Hi Susan :-)
Right, one class for you. And then another teacher, and another teacher. And depending on how big those classes are (we have class anywhere from 5 students to 1600 students).
Right now, when an Admin does something it is tied to the Admin's account. Meaning the users would see my name (or the name associated with the Admin account) and because there is no way to currently turn off "reply" if a student replied it would come to me.
So for instance if the email is related to Financial Aid, some students instead of following the directions in the email to contact Financial Aid are going to reply directly to the email (which would be to the Admin).
Also, I'm not sure what type of message you want an Admin to post to all your students that a teacher can't post themselves? Would this be a "your teacher is being replaced" type notice?
I have noticed with past successful Ideas that Canvas works best with Use Cases and Scenarios for why a change should be made. So, I'm trying to get your Use Case here.
Our administrators over our 20+ campuses work very closely with our students. So, at times, they may need to send a message to class regarding for example... a change in clinical sites (which could happen the same day of the clinical). Our instructors are not always available to leave the message, in fact, the message may be intended for them as well.
Our administrators welcome replies from students. I understand each institution has their own way of conveying messages; but having this feature doesn't necessarily mean everyone needs to use it. I know it would be extremely beneficial across our campuses.
