Current Behavior: Files attached to discussions are uploaded to the users personal "Files" area, which has a quota limit.
Desired Behavior: Files attached to discussions would be uploaded and saved within the course - and not associated with a user.
Currently, when a student uploads an attachment into a discussion post the attachment is saved in the users personal "Files" area, and it's not saved anywhere inside of the course. This brings up the following concerns:
- Students are prevented and unable to attach files to discussions if their personal file storage is full.
Courses that may be using discussions for assignment purposes now rely on the users quota - when there are no student quotas in other aspects of Canvas.
Once a student removes items from the "Files" area, they would then also be inaccessible from the discussion. This would make the file inaccessible if it's later needed as part of the students academic record.
While we do realize that the workaround would be to use "Assignments" for this type of activity, that just isn't realistic - in the end we can't control how the teachers run their courses inside of Canvas.
Ideally, it would be great to see these uploads be attached to the course, and not the user. Canvas trainers and documentation always market the fact that there is essentially no quota imposed on students who are interacting with the course.
