Admins could enable the grade override column from the institutional level instead of on a course by course basis. The option to turn it off or back on would still exist in the gradebook if instructors wanted to change it.
Cheryl, the "Final Grade Override" is a course level feature option, and as such it is currently configured so that at the account level, admins have the option to toggle "Final Grade Override" to one of three positions: Off, Allow, and On. Setting the permission to On turns the feature on in all courses by default; the Allow setting gives instructors the option to enable it in the Feature Options section of their course settings.
What would you like to see changed?
Can you please elaborate? We have it set to "on", but each instructor must go into each course and "allow" the override column in order to have it show up. We also don't even see an option for "allow" or "off". What is the difference between allow and on and if on creates it in each course, then why is it not visible in the courses, unless we go in and toggle it on within the course?

Cheryl, this is what I see in the admin panel under Feature Options | Course—but from what you've stated, your view varies, so I'll do some checking to see if there is a work in progress underway here:
Cheryl, this is also portrayed in the documentation (refer to the Final Grade Override section):
What feature options are currently available for an entire Canvas account?
From that section:
The New Gradebook feature option must be enabled to enable this feature option. Once this feature option is enabled within a course, the feature option cannot be disabled in the course. Additionally, the account-level feature option also cannot be disabled.
Does this help clarify?
This is my view:
We used to have a toggle switch but it was only "off" or "allow".
Cheryl, we're not able to see images that have been attached by external mail or copy-pasted. Would you please navigate to the discussion and embed the image directly?
But it still doesn't explain why we have it on, but that only creates an enable. If there is an enable and an on, what is the difference, if on is really just enable? Or is there a problem with our instance?
This is my image. Obviously, it has been turned on, and that is a permanent choice. However, "on" only means that instructors can enable it. I want to be able to enable it institution wide. I have to spend two days each term going into each individual class to make it available. I would like to able to have it as a default.
Cheryl, I was able to find the explanation in the New Gradebook: FAQ :
Can I turn off the Final Grade Override feature option once it's enabled? No. The Final Grade Override feature is meant to integrate with the New Gradebook if it's enabled. If you want to test this feature, only enable the Final Grade Override feature option in the beta environment. Do not enable this feature option in your production environment until you are sure you want to enable it for all instructors.

In addition, in January 2020 the course-level feature option for Final Grade Override will be removed, and will be replaced by a course-level option in Course Settings. That's discussed in Changes Coming to Canvas Feature Options (Part 1)
Based on my reading, then, what you have requested is coming in January when the New Gradebook becomes the default (and only) gradebook.
I think we can archive this idea! What do you think?
I read your documentation, but right now, the option is only to enable for all instructors. My suggestion is to make it available from the account level to turn on for all instructors. Is that what is coming, because the implication is only that it will be available only at the course level (which we already have), but each instructor still has to turn it on. There is no way to turn it on for the instructors (i.e., at the account level).
Can you clarify if these changes will make it so that the override is a default or only that the instructors have the ability to turn it on?
Cheryl, once the account-level feature option for Final Grade Override is removed entirely, the course level feature option will be replaced by an option in a course's settings (not a feature option) that will allow instructors to turn it on or off.
So for those of you reading along, we've opened this for voting as a request for a new account-level admin setting governing Final Grade Override, accompanied by the ability for instructors to disable that at the course level should they choose to do so.
Thanks for talking this out with us, Cheryl!
