Searching for groups is slow in student view

On courses with many groups, viewing and searching among groups takes unacceptably long time for our students.  

Example:
1.    Act as a student and go to the People tab on a course with many groups and many subgroups
2.    Write something in the search bar
3.    First, the blue spin appears for a few seconds, then the page will be white for quite some time before the groups appear. Many students leave the group page when the blue spin disappear instead of waiting for search results.

Can you optimize this function so searches for groups go faster or, at least, that the blue spin is visible until the search is finished?

Hi  @johan_arvidsson . Have you contacted Canvas Support to see if they can provide any additional information about this? They will be able to check out your instance of Canvas to see exactly what's going on. It may still be the case that they suggest a feature idea, but when things seem like they may not be working correctly, it's great to have their input before we move forward with a feature idea.

Thanks Adam for your answer. I have already written a case to the Canvas Support (including a url to a course with many groups in our instance of Canvas), but they asked me to write here instead...

Thanks,  @johan_arvidsson . After chatting with our support supervisor, we're going to move this idea forward for voting. In addition, she is going to ask our engineering team to investigate implementing an improvement to the UX that would extend persistence of the "loading" indicator on the page during the search/load process.

Many of our courses have hundreds of groups, so decreasing load time or alternatively making it more clear that it is still searching would improve life for a lot of students.

As part of the new Ideas & Themes process, all ideas in Idea Conversations were reviewed by the Product Team. Any Idea that was associated with an identified theme was moved to the new Idea & Themes space. Any Idea that was not part of the move is being marked as Archived.
