An instructor at our college has requested a note field in which he can record the reason for a student's absence, tardiness, or early departure. This field would attach to each attendance record (i.e. date).
There is a way to "Manage Badges" in the Attendance Tool where you can specify certain wording for some icons that might be a good alternative until a note field is created. You can learn more at: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13050-4152107406
Also, when you go to the Grades, look to the far right for the gear icon. When you click on it, you'll see an option to add a Notes Column within the Grades. Once added, you can drag the column to the very front next to the person's name and that might be another workaround there as well.
