Hello. My question is about the 'email' within Canvas. Can I save drafts of emails I would like to edit and send later? Can I modify the text in a message such as change the font size or type? Or do any editing to the text?
Hello Jen Collins Welcome to the Canvas Community. Thanks for posting your questions here. As a general statement to begin... Canvas does not have e-mail. It's calling "messaging" or "conversations" via the Canvas "Inbox". The difference is that you cannot initially send an e-mail to someone using, for example, your Outlook e-mail client and expect the recipient to receive it in Canvas. Nor can you send a message to someone (such as a friend) via Canvas that is not taking the same course as you are. You can only message other students and your instructors from within the Canvas environment. Further, every user in Canvas can set their own notification settings...including how they want to be notified about certain events in Canvas and the frequency of those notifications. So, it's possible to receive a copy of a Canvas message to your school e-mail account (or if you prefer, your personal e-mail account). Or, maybe you don't want to get e-mail notifications at all. Maybe you only want to be notified about things in Canvas via text message on your cell phone. That's also an option. There are several Guides on how to set all of this up (I'll provided you with the instructor and student Guides since you didn't specify if you are one or the other...but the Guides are quite similar either way.)
How do I add contact methods to receive Canvas notifications as an instructor?
How do I set my Canvas notification preferences as an instructor?
How do I add an additional email address as a contact method in Canvas as an instructor?
How do I add a text (SMS) contact method in Canvas as an instructor?

Moving on to your questions...
Can I save drafts of emails I would like to edit and send later?
Unfortunately, no. I did a bit of searching here in the Community, and I found some archived Feature Ideas that didn't get lots of votes at the time of their submission (these are in Cold Storage, so you may need to request to join this group):
Save draft of inbox message
feature request: Add an email draft to the email inbox
Saving CANVAS email to draft (auto save) when there's an interruption to the computer you're working on.
Save a draft email to complete at a later time.
Save draft emails in the Inbox
Enable drafts for conversations
Draft capability in Conversations
Can I modify the text in a message such as change the font size or type?
No. However, there is a Feature Idea, Add rich-content editor to Conversations, that is on Instructure's Product Radar stage. So, while it may not be a priority right now (due to other projects they are working on), they are aware of the need.
Or do any editing to the text?
No. It's pretty much plain text. See the above link to the the Feature Idea on Product Radar.
I hope this information is helpful to you, Jen!
Wonderful Chris! Thank you so much! That was so helpful!
