How am I notified if I receive a chat from someone. Is there a sound or an indicator similar to an inbox number?
Hi David and James,
I have done some more digging, and with the assistance of support, and some testing in multiple windows, I have been able to ascertain the following:
From Support: 'Okay, the notifications are actually a bit "tricky" - If this option is turned on, you will receive alerts if Chat is open in Canvas but your browser window is minimized or you are viewing another browser tab. Alerts will not send if you leave Chat to view another area in Canvas'
Now for what you all came here to see, what actually is the 'alert'. It is an audible 'bing' that will happen, there are no other visual alerts, purely audio only in the tab that is active on the chat window (with the alert option enabled).
Hope that clarifies for you, does that answer your original question David?
Can you please advise which chat tool you are using, do you mean the Canvas Chat tool -->What is Chat? Or is there another tool that is in use at your school/institution?
Look forward to hearing from you!
Yes! Sorry! I am talking about the Canvas Tool Chat.
I have done some testing and poked around, I found some detail that is relevant on the instructor documentation pages How do I use Chat as an instructor?.
On this page it states: 'To receive alerts for new chat messages, click the New message alerts button . If this option is turned on, you will receive alerts if Chat is open in Canvas but your browser window is minimized or you are viewing another browser tab. Alerts will not send if you leave Chat to view another area in Canvas.'
I have also looked around and found various feature ideas have been created in the past in the hope for this:
It seems that this has been suggested a few times in the past but never received enough votes for progression to the next stage. I highly recommend you have a look at Enable Notifications for Chat and vote for this if it is something you would like to see.
Also, to let you know, I have edited your last couple of replies, we generally recommend logging into the community to post as this ensures the full message thread isn't reposted in your comment each time you reply. I have removed this for you to clean up this thread for easier reading online.
Hope that helps!
Stuart, I saw that page and almost wrote it up in a response, but I felt it was another one of those areas where the Canvas Guides didn't fully answer the question. I went looking for a documented answer and searched for how the alerts appeared but couldn't find it. I am involved in another project and didn't make the time to go in and turn on chat to see what happened.
Is there a sound or an indicator similar to an inbox number?
The Canvas Guide merely says you will receive alerts, but doesn't describe what the alert is. I still don't know if a sound plays, the border on the window flashes, you get a system notification, or what. So, I guess the short version is "yes" there is some kind of alert, but I'm not sure what it is.
The other page I was going to mention in my response is How do I use inline Chat as an instructor? I wasn't sure what kind David was asking about, but the documentation for inline chats says
Chat alerts are not available for inline chat.
Chat is one of those areas I don't have much experience with. We've been trained for a long time to not enable chat in our courses. That stems from one of our instructors who had a student post sensitive information in a chat and there wasn't a way to delete a message at the time so she had to shut down the entire chat to get rid of it. That has since been remedied, but we don't really use chat at our institution so I couldn't answer from memory or personal experience.
Thank you for taking the time to dig deeper into this.
Aaaaaah! I received this notification as an email. This is great!
Hmm very good point James, I have popped over to the How do I use Chat as an instructor? doc and asked the Canvas Doc Team to see if they could enhance it with additional details about exactly what the alert feature looks like so it looks like I did miss the original intent (my apologies David).
Also, we opted not to use Canvas Chat for a long time due to that exact same reason. Thankfully there is now an option for an instructor to 'delete' sensitive content, which, while it doesn't permanently erase it from the system, does hide it from anyone other than Instructors/admins. It makes it a little closer and OK for some needs while retaining auditability, but I can see how some would still opt not to use it.
Thank you, Again
Thanks for looking digging more into that Stuart. That sounds very atypical Canvas for the only alert to be audible .
That was my thoughts also James, very unusual (hence I was surprised to find this).
