So, this may sound stupid, but I can’t figure out how to receive notifications when a student enters s comment in the gradebook. Am I missing something???
Hi Sherry Grisham-Cushing Welcome to the Canvas Community, where I can assure you there are absolutely no stupid questions, so you should definitely always feel free to ask away! And in fact, despite using Canvas myself for some 4-5 years, I can still get confused about some of the notification settings.
Assuming you are speaking about a student's reply to your own comment on an assignment, that reply should be a setting that is part of the Conversations settings in your notifications, as indicated here: How do I reply to submission comments in the Inbox as an instructor? since the lesson specifically mentions Conversations. Be sure to check your notification settings (see How do I set my Canvas notification preferences as an instructor? for an overview...but also note there is a PDF linked in that lesson that gives even more detail on specific notification settings).
The one thing I'm a bit puzzled by is that, by default, I believe most of those settings for Conversation notifications should already be enabled automatically for you. So make sure you've got the correct email setup in your profile to receive the notifications (How do I add contact methods to receive Canvas notifications as an instructor? ). It also may not hurt to double-check your spam/junk or Outlook's notorious "Clutter" folder to make sure the messages are not winding up there. To be sure, there are some things that do not send out notifications (such as a reply that a student makes to document annotation that you may have made in DocViewer in SpeedGrader), but I am fairly certain that otherwise most general student comments should trigger a notification to you.
