My students typed their responses to questions on a pdf in Canvas. When they submitted it to me, the responses were unreadable. Why did this happen and how do I correct the issue?
For the most part I have. It seems there are a couple of factors that
caused mine to happen. First, the students were not "xing" out of the tool
bad prior to submitting. Second, many of my students were using their
virtual keyboard on the iPad and not clicking done prior to submission.
Additionally many of my students were changing the font type. Once they
only used the font that Canvas defaults to (helvetica) the problem didn't
occur as much. Finally, I have found it most often occurs when the
students have their document in landscape instead of portrait.
I have not heard of this before so would like to get a little more detail from you. Did you find the same problem for all students in the class or only a few? Can I please ask what operating system you use, and the web browser? Have you tried a different computer, or different web browser to view the student's submissions?
Also, I would like to check and ensure you are using the out-of-box feature in Canvas for this, therefore, can you please confirm the student's followed this process How do I submit a PDF assignment with annotations in the Student app on my iOS device? ? (or does what you see differ from that)?

Thank you for your prompt reply. This is occurring on all of my student’s
iPads. We are using iOS version 11.3. I have attached a screen shot so
that you can see the issue. This only happens when typing. When they
write with the pen it submits correctly. When the students click on the
submission tab, they see the same issue. However, when they are actively
working on the assignment it appears fine. Also, when submitted, the
program also rotated the typing.

Yes, the students are submitting their assignments correctly. This is the third year that I am using Canvas. I have not had this issue until this year.
All of my students are experiencing this problem. We are using iOS 11.3.
Yes, my students have followed the correct procedure to submit their
assignments. I have attached a screen shot so you can see the issue.
