Some students have reported that some current semester courses are NOT showing on the student's dashboard by default. What might cause this?
There are a few things that could cause the courses not to be showing on the students dashboard. Here are a few things I check when a student reports this type of problem.
Yes, the student is enrolled in the course.
Yes, the course is published AND the start date has been met for the current semester.
As for “favoriting” the course, it is my understanding is that courses for the current semester will display on the dashboard, automatically.
I found this Canvas student training video: "New courses are automatically included in your favorites and will appear on your Dashboard." (at the 4 min mark)
New courses are displayed on the dashboard as long as the user has not explicitly selected Favorites. If they have selected favorites, that overrides whatever the defaults would be on the dashboard.
Hi MIchael, and thank you for the reply.
Just to clarify, do you mean that just by manually favoriting a single class, that overrides any/all enrolled courses for a current semester from automatically showing on the dashboard? Or is there another way to explicitly select favorites?
Yep, that's exactly it. Once you manually favorite a single class, Canvas assumes that you will be doing your own "favorite-ing", and will only dispay those and no longer automatically add new courses to the dashboard.
Very good to know. Thank you, Michael. I'll pass this on.
We're fairly new to Canvas ourselves, and that one caused lots of confusion the second semester we were in production...
