Can I have two separate Sections and/or Courses share groups? I don't want them to see each others assignments, files, modules, etc, just converse via Groups. If not possible, what would you advise?
Hi Diane Pawar Welcome to the Canvas Community, and you ask a great question that can cause confusion--still--for many of us more veteran Canvas users! This depends on what you want to do. First, NO to sharing groups across courses. Period. However, if two courses are combined into one, such as what is outlined here (How do I cross-list a section in a course as an instructor? ) the answer is yes...kind of...depending on what you want to do. (Also, be aware not all institutions allow this without intervention from your Canvas administrator.)
So, assuming you have ONE course site that, in turn, has sections, you can definitely create groups that includes students across all sections. This is outlined here: How do I add a group set in a course? Note, in fact, that creating groups includes the checkbox "Require group members to be in the same section--which I realize is the opposite of what you want--but demonstrates that, by default, group membership can indeed be spread among sections.
However, I'm not sure what you mean by "share" groups. Students in Group A will not be able to see anything from students in Group B, even though those groups may have students from both sections within them. Group work remains private to that group; you (the instructor) is the only one who can see the activity in those separate groups. On the other hand, if you just wanted a group site where ALL students from all sections can converse, then you can just create one group that, basically, has ALL students in it.
Getting back to your other concerns, you can create assignments for each section so that the students in the other section cannot see them by following this guide: How do I assign an assignment to a course section? However, this does NOT apply to Modules; there is no way to hide an entire Module name from one section. Assignments within a Module....yes. The Module itself? No.
You also mention FILES. Again, no...assuming you keep your Files menu area available. All sections in that class site will see them. If, however, you hide your Files menu area and then link to the files on a specific assignment that is only available to a section, then you can indeed do this.
So this all comes down, really, to what you hope to accomplish and/or "hide" from students across the sections. I also recommend you check this recent question: Can someone explain the difference between groups and sections? , where Chris Hofer gives some good links to get you to the proper online lessons regarding questions and groups.
I hope this helps a bit, Diane!
