How do I delete a folder in Canvas?
If you are talking about a folder in the files area, To delete a folder, click the line item for the folder . Click the Delete icon . Or click the Options icon and then click the Delete link .
How do I delete a file or folder as an instructor?
None of those options seem to exist anymore. There’s no delete icon, no options icon. But thank you!
Here’s screenshot of my canvas window:
Katherine, the options will appear upon selection of a file or folder.
Actually they do not. When I select a folder, I get an underline under it (if that makes sense) and/or it opens. What am I doing wrong?
Katherine, selecting the line item will reveal the tools, whereas clicking on the file name or folder name itself underlines/opens the item. Putting it slightly differently, click on the line by placing the cursor to the right of the file/folder name rather than on the name. That should work! Does it?
Well, no. I can place the cursor slightly to the right of the item and the item underlines. No tools or icons appear. I can click on the folder name and the folder will open. No icons or tools appear! Is there a view menu or other button I’m not seeing?
Okay, if I select the file in the whole list of all files, rather than the ‘headline’ list on the left, I can then access a delete option from the three vertical dots. So the problem is solved, really, but I do wonder why I don’;t have the more immediate choices. Thanks for your help.
Now I understand why the tools were not displaying! Yes, as Robbie's screenshot above and the lesson (How do I delete a file or folder as an instructor? ) show, when the instructor makes the selection in the right hand pane, the tools appear....or at least they should. While you can use the three dots (aka a kebab menu), you should also be able to click on the trash can (#2 in the image above). If those tools aren't displaying for you, you might want to submit a support ticket to see if it's a browser or caching issue (How do I get help with Canvas as an instructor?)
I did try changing browsers. I’m. not going to worry about it anymore….a long as I can get rid of folders, I’m fine.
Thanks for the help!
I would like to delete an empty sub-folders from my Canvas Files, but am having an issue similar to Katherine's.
In the example below, the empty sub-folder I would like to delete is named MODULES LIST (from within the COURSE IMAGES folder). As shown below, like Katherine, I also do not have a ribbon with icons...
Also like Katherine, when I click the main directory (PSY2012_DEV_Smith), it am provided a list of the folders at the right, along with the vertical dots drop-down list (where folders could be deleted). However, the sub-folder I would like to delete ('Modules List) is not listed.
When I click on the COURSE IMAGES folder, a list of the files in that folder appears (along with the vertical dots drop-down list where those files could be deleted), but the MODULES LIST sub-folder is not listed?
I was hoping to reorganize and clean up my files. Thank you in advance
Hello Kimberly Smith...
Let's take a look at each of the images you've provided to break down what you're trying to accomplish...
I hope this information is helpful to you, Kimberly.
Thank you Chris Hofer ,
It never occurred to me that folders would be embedded within the files list alphabetically. I was expecting to see folders listed above the files. I get it now. Thanks so much for taking the time
