I would like to eliminate a weighted category (participation) for 2nd quarter. if I do that, how will it effect my gradebook and grades already calculated?
Tom, are you using grading periods? If so, then I'm not completely sure. Everything I've read (How do I use grading periods in a course? & How do I view grading periods in a course?) seems to indicate that you can't change student's grades after the end of a grading period. Yet, it doesn't say anything about what would happen if you changed how the grades that are there are weighted. My recommendation is to try playing around with this in your Canvas test or beta environment to see what happens. If the grades don't change, then you should be good to go in your production (regular) Canvas environment. Here are the guides on how to access your beta and test environments - How do I access the Canvas test environment as an instructor? & How do I access the Canvas beta environment as an instructor?
Please let us know what you find out!
Sorry it took 7 months to get back to you.
Yes it does change all the other grading periods if you change the weights in a 3rd quarter. We found the solution is to create a second series of assignment groups and just out all assignments and quizzes into those new assignment groups. The new set of assignment groups will add up to 100%. You total of assignment groups will add up to 200% but that does not matter as no assignments from this quarter are put into the other quarters. Since the individual weights of that quarter add up to 100%, your numbers will come out correctly.
