On my dashboard, I am seeing that one of my classes has 9 messages, but when I click on the message button, I cannot find the unread messages.
If you are asking about discussions, then clicking on the button takes you to the main discussion for that course. Here's the instructions from the Canvas Student Guide that explains it: How do I view Discussions as a student?
There are badges with numbers on the right side of the list of discussions. The first number is the number of unread messages and the second number is the number of total messages. You would want to pick a discussion that has unread messages.
Once you're in the discussion itself, you can scroll through the discussion. The unread messages will have a blue circle to the left of the discussion. This is explained in the Canvas Student How do I mark discussion replies as read or unread as a student? If you have trouble finding the unread messages, there is an Unread button at the top that will hide all of the read messages and just show you the unread ones.
Siobhan, as far as I'm aware you can't tell if you have "messages" for a specific class on the dashboard. The most you could see is if you have discussion posts or announcements. I'm not sure what view you have set-up for your dashboard, but here are the three different options and what the different icons mean.
Hope this helps! Kona
