I want to hide (mute) an assignment before I start grading it. Is this possible?
My Canvas courses seem to require that I post at least one student's grade before I'm given the option to hide the assignment.
Hi Rachel. You should be able to mute/hide grades before grading any assignments. I am not sure if you are trying to mute the assignment through the new/old gradebook or from SpeedGrader, but these documents demonstrate how you should be able to mute grades before starting the grading process, How do I mute or unmute an assignment in the Gradebook? (old gradebook) and How do I hide grades for an assignment in the New Gradebook? (new gradebook). If this doesn't work for you, you might try in another browser window but if you still have no luck I would contact Canvas Support. They could let you know if any bugs have been reported.
I hope this helps and let us know how it goes!
Hopefully Rachel received the answer she needed, but in case anyone is still searching about this issue, this is the relevant section from the link Eric posted about the New Gradebook:
"If you have not begun grading the assignment yet, the Hide Grades option will not be available. Instead, select Grade Posting Policy and choose to post grades Manually. For more details, see How do I select a grade posting policy for an assignment in the New Gradebook?"
Good luck with the grading!
I changed all of my assignment settings to post grades manually.
I’m curious though. If I hadn’t made that change but instead opted to hide grades after grading the first student’s assignment, would the first student get notice of their graded assignment?
Hi Rachel, Wish I could help, but I'm not sure! Like you, I switched to the manual setting to avoid the chance that the first student might see the grade.Regards,Elizabeth
