I'd love to make an External Tool page be the homepage of a Canvas course site, is this possible?
Thanks very much,
Hi Paul Hibbitts ! As far as I know the only way to do that is by embedding, not by means of an external tool (so, for example, you cannot just use the redirect tool). That's why I embed my blog as the homepage by embedding the blog in a Canvas page:
I think I recall asking a Canvas guru at my school if there was maybe a way to use the Redirect Tool designated as the homepage, and he said that no, embedding was the only way to make it work.
I'm curious, though, if there is some kind of workaround. I find it clunky to use the iframe embedding, but I do.
Hi Laura Gibbs, thanks for your reply!
Similar to you I was not able to find a way to do this directly, so I settled for an iFrame. I find though the appearance of web pages brought in via the External Tool are better than standard embeds (i.e. full page and scrollbar issues not present). Maybe someone else might still have a workaround for an LTI homepage
At my school more and more courses are using Canvas, so with more students spending time in Canvas I've been trying to further integrate my Grav Course Hub elements right into Canvas itself - here is my homepage attempt so far: CMPT363 E100 User Interface Design (and matching independent Course Hub site Home | CMPT-363) .
Yes, agreed! The Redirect Tool does a better job than iframe with sizing, scrolling, all of that.
And THANK YOU for sharing your course site; being able to make courses open for people to see and learn from is one of my favorite Canvas features... and even more so when the subject itself is user interface design!
Pinging Keegan Long-Wheeler ... although I am guessing you two are already connected via Twitter and elsewhere.
And pinging Lande P for this great example of external content displayed in Canvas. :-)
The discussion in this thread LTI-App as Course Home Page? might be of interest/help.
Thanks for the heads-up Peter!
