I'm reasonably recent to the Canvas Community and I have been slowly getting around, looking at things, asking questions, learning how to maximize the functionality of Canvas etc., etc.
The Canvas Community is a great place with a wealth of knowledge, build a profile and connect with other members from educational institutions around the world.
So, is there a Canvas Community App in the works?
I know this is a big ask given the volume of content available, but having your own profile and access to push notifications/alerts would certainly allow us Canvas Community members feel more like a community.
This seems like a reasonable place to start, with links to the Canvas Community and knowledge base from the App until someone comes up with a more effective idea on how these can be managed.
Reason: I received email notifications on replies to comments I made and I only was able to access them when I arrived at work (I only have a work account linked to my Canvas profile). I know I could put in a number of work-arounds to get messages more quickly, but in an App driven world this would be a nice value-add for community members beyond competitors all whilst feeling connected.
(I'm sure I'm not the only one who has thought of this)
EDIT: I just worked out how to create an idea open for voting (I told you I was new at this!) You can find it here Canvas Community Mobile App and vote.
Hi, Josh, you'll see that I posted a version of this response to your idea submission (which is now archived; read on to know why).
It is not only one of our dreams but also one of our current goals to offer an app through which our members can participate in the Canvas Community. When we moved the Canvas Community to its current platform nearly three years ago now, we discovered that our third party software provider's existing app did not function well with the authentication method we're using for the Community (the authentication process that pulls credentials from the members' Canvas account, as explained in How do I log into the Community with my Canvas Account?). Working within the design constraints of the current platform, we've embarked upon a steady process of redesign so that heavily-viewed pages render better on the mobile browser. It's nowhere near perfect, but we hope that people who have been with us for a few years have seen incremental improvements in that regard.
More recently, we've entered into the process of evaluating new platform providers for the Community, and you can read more about the history of that at JiveX (Community Platform) Acquisition and Platform Update . The Community Team is here to assure you that a robust mobile experience is one of our top priorities.
So, please know that we're working on this. We'll keep posting updates about our platform search in the Meta Community Group, which is where we discuss all-things-Community.
Thanks for being a stalwart member of the Community, and thanks for calling us* "great." We like to think so.
* us = the collective awesomeness created by the (currently) 235,558 members of the Community: that's what's great!
