Can Students see which section they belong to in Crosslisted courses (No People Tab)

(Canvas is new to our University, learning as we go)

Ex1. ENGL1300-12345 & SPAN1300-23456 are crosslisted

When SPAN students login, they see the ENGL1300 course, it may cause confusion.

Ex2. CHEM1100-10001 is crosslisted with 10 other lab sections, 10001-10010.

Is it possible for the student to log in and see which 5 digit section they belong to?

We have the People option turned off for students, and we don't want the course name to be too long. How are other schools handling these types of scenarios, looking for suggestions. We prefer to turn off the option for Teachers to edit their own course title

@StephenPerez Not the answer you are looking for but we do allow our instructors to change the course names so they can remove anything that shows students a specific section number. We do all our syncing off of the section names and instructors are not able to change those.

Generally, no - students do  not see the explicit section name and code they are enrolled in. However, many schools use that information for the course name and title  which is available to students for obvious reasons. It is advised to change the name of the course for cross-listed courses so students do not get confused thinking they enrolled in section 001 but they see 003, for example. It isn't necessary - the teacher can make an announcement. But students do not get access to course settings - sections tab.

My 3 beginning art sections are crosslisted as I have done the past several years, but for some reason only the parent course shows up as published? Therefore my students in the other two sections do not see the course on their dashboard. I tried having them go into ALL COURSES and star their section, but it says I have to publish it first and acts like they are not cross listed. Did I miss a step somewhere? This has always worked easily before?

When you have two or more cross-listed courses together, one of the courses is essentially the "parent" course.  The others could be considered "child" courses.  If you have three courses (A, B, and C) and you want to cross-list them all into course A, this means that after the cross-listing has been completed, all enrollments (not any of the content) from courses B and C will be located in course A.  Within course A, you can go to your "People" page to see which students are enrolled in each section (A, B, or C).  Since B and C are now cross-listed with course A, none or your students will see courses B or C displayed on your Dashboard...only course A.  Should you want the courses de-cross-listed, the enrollments will return to how they once were...thus students seeing course A, B, or C on their Dashboard that they were enrolled in.

Thanks Chris, I've done cross-listing for the last 4 years. I have the two child crosslisted to the parent course as usual, but my students in the child courses cannot see the parent course at all. As I said, I must've missed a step somewhere?

It looks like there are no students populated in the child sections on my end, and no students to grade on my end either?

It sounds strange that your students cannot see the "parent" course at all after you've done the cross-listing.  As an admin, here are the steps that I'd normally take to cross-list two courses together...assuming that Course A is the "parent" and Course B is the "child".

1. Log in to Course B.
2. Select "Settings" from the left-hand side course navigation menu.
3. Select the "Sections" tab.
4. Under "Course Sections", click on the section name (this would generally be the same as your course name and/or course number)
5. Click on the "Cross-List this Section" button on the right side of the screen.
6. In the "Search for Course" box, type in info related to Course A (i.e. Course A's course number), and select it when it appears in the search results.
7. Click the "Cross-List This Section" button.

You should now be able to log in to Course A, go to your "People" page, and see all students listed from both Course A and Course B.  Students will no longer be listed in Course B after the cross-list happens because cross-listing only moves enrollments (not course content) from one course to another.  You won't need to do grading in Course B...only in Course A.

*NOTE* If you were to log back in to Course B and go to the "Sections" tab again (as described in Step #3 above), you would notice that the section name is not there any more.  That's because the cross-listing steps have moved that section to Course A.  You should be able to go to the "Sections" tab of Course A to see both sections listed on that screen.

Students should only see Course A listed when they log in to Canvas.  If they do not see course A listed on their Dashboard, make sure they are going to the "Courses" >> "All Courses" screen in Canvas to see if Course A is listed there.  If it is, they should be able to click on the star next to the course name (so that it turns yellow) to mark it as a "favorite".  Then that course will appear on their Dashboard.  Just make sure they are aware that they'll need to use Course A to access your course content...in case they are looking for Course B (which they wouldn't have access to any more).

@REBECCAWEEKS while @Chris_Hofer is 100% correct, I thought I would add on something.  I have yet to figure out how this happens (maybe a Canvas bug but impossible to reproduce) but I see this same situation fairly frequently with my faculty.  Somehow it is like they cross-listed into themselves or the process just did not go through.  An easy way to check is to go your course settings and choose the "sections" tab.  This will show you all the sections that are in your cross-listed/parent course.  Next to the ones you thought should have moved over, how many users are listed?  If it is "0" then something did not go correctly (this is what I see all the time). If this is the case for you, I would reach out to your Canvas admin for your institution and have them de-cross-list the course.  This should undo whatever happened and allow for the process to hopefully happen successfully.
