User Summary: Canvas Admins (2021-07-17)

This document highlights features from the current Canvas web release—for both your individual user role and all user roles in your institution.

The date of this document indicates when the included features will be available in the production environment. Unless otherwise indicated, features are already available in the beta environment.

Default Feature Videos

This section includes videos that highlight a default release feature that directly impacts your user role. Not all default features may include a video.

External Tools (LTI)

SCORM Launch Links Enforcement

Signed launch links will be integrated into SCORM content. This change ensures that all SCORM content will be encrypted, meaning that only users enrolled in the course where the SCORM content was uploaded will be given access.

No video is available for this feature.

Notifications

SMS Notifications End of Life {July 31}

SMS Notifications for Announcements and Grading have been removed from Canvas. Additionally, the SMS column has been removed from the Notifications page.

No video is available for this feature.

Rich Content Editor

Classic Rich Content Editor End of Life

The Classic Rich Content Editor is no longer supported in Canvas. Any institution that had turned off the New RCE feature option must use the New Rich Content Editor, which was originally turned on for all institutions in the 2021-01-16 Canvas release.

No video is available for this feature.

Users

Maintenance Windows Enforcement {July 15}

Regular maintenance windows will be implemented every two weeks, and Canvas may be unavailable.

This feature was previously introduced in the 2021-05-15 release.

Preview Document Details

As part of the user summaries, you have two options for distribution: view the preview (default link provided above), or use the template to create a copy.

View Preview (Default Link)
Use this link if you don't need to modify the content. Additionally, this option ensures the document is updated by the Canvas community team with any changes that may be made in the release notes.

Use Template
To create a copy of the document to edit for your own distribution, click the Use Template button in the preview document. You must log in to a Google account to use this feature. The template will be stored in your Google Drive account.

  • Once you use the template, the content is no longer associated with the original document and you must maintain your own content changes as may be indicated in the release notes.
  • For the best user experience, user summaries should not be copied and distributed until the Monday before the Canvas release, which will allow time for features within the release to be confirmed by the Canvas product team. Features are subject to change at any time. Please review the date at the top of the Preview document to indicate to latest updates.
