How Much Is That Classroom in the Window? A Two-University Implementation of Canvas Catalog Presentation

The University of Maryland and Indiana University will discuss the implementation of Canvas Catalog for administering non-credit and continuing education courses university-wide and beyond. Specifically, the discussion will include customizing the storefront, using payment gateways, and organizing Canvas by subaccounts with appropriate permission levels for Catalog customers.

 @jsowalsk ‌ I just viewed your slides from InstCon. So, you and Indiana both integrated Catalog within your existing instance of Canvas and did not opt for the stand alone second instance? I just want to make sure I have that straight. I have been pushing Catalog here at Penn State for a couple of years, but there are a couple of things folks can't wrap their heads around, like their strong belief that a non credit platform needs a SIS.

Hi  @PSU_Tony ‌, that is correct both clcavana‌ and myself at our institutions have Catalog sitting on top of our Canvas instances. Both institutions use CAS authentication and have students self-enroll in non-term based courses. Our Canvas instance for term-based courses loads users by SIS. I would not recommend using SIS for Catalog since individuals profiles will not be able to merge correctly with self-enrollment. Please reach out with any further questions.

Thanks  @jsowalsk ‌. I guess I was thinking more in terms of Catalog as a second instance. Our folks are too used to an all in one solution like Destiny One I think.

Gotcha. There is a way to do a second instance just we have not done this. I would ask the Catalog Users Group‌ about this to see how people use this.
