Canvas Deploy Notes (2020-04-18)

Canvas Deploy Notes (2020-04-18)

Deploys currently take place weekly to align with temporarily deploy adjustments as announced in COVID-19 Updates to Canvas Releases and Deploys

Canvas deploys contain code changes that are intended to fix bugs, improve performance, and prepare for new features, but they do not affect customer workflows. These deploys take place every two weeks and can be tested in the beta environment before the production deploy date indicated in the title of this document. Intended changes in workflow are noted in the Canvas Release Notes published monthly.

Deploy notes may include notable fixed bugs, bugs included in the Canvas Known Issues list, and additional updates that do not affect user functionality.

Blueprint Courses

Associated Course Teacher Count

Summary

In the Associated Courses list, any course with more than five teachers displays the teacher count instead of individual teacher names.

Change Benefit

This change improves Canvas performance in loading the Associations page. Previously the page could time out if the page took longer than 60 seconds to load.

Affected User Roles

Admins

Admins who open a Blueprint Course and view the Associations page view any existing courses and new courses with a teacher count instead of names, if the course has more than five teachers.

Permissions

Canvas Insights

Summary

The Canvas Insights (Beta) - View permission includes permissions details. This permission is listed for both course and account roles.

Change Benefit

This change includes the details about the Canvas Insights permission that currently displays in the Permissions page for all users.

Affected User Roles

Admins

Admins who view the Canvas Insights permission can view the details associated with the permissions. The Additional Considerations section notes that the permission is only supported when Canvas Insights is enabled for an account. For details about Canvas Insights, please contact a Customer Success Manager.

Learning Outcomes

Summary

For account roles, the Learning Outcomes - Add / Edit / Delete permission no longer manages visibility for the Rubrics link in the Account Navigation Menu. Visibility to account-level Rubrics is managed by the Rubrics - Add / Edit / Delete permission.

Change Benefit

This change aligns the Manage Rubrics permission functionality at the account level with the Manage Rubrics permission functionality at the course level.

Affected User Roles

Admins

Account roles that have the Learning Outcomes - Add / Edit / Delete permission can view the Outcomes link in the Account Navigation Menu. To view the Rubrics page, the Rubrics - Add / Edit / Delete permission must also be enabled. Previously if the Rubrics permission was not enabled, admins could view the Outcomes page but Canvas would generate an error when they tried to view the Rubrics page.

Rich Content Editor

Anchor Tag Tel HTML Attribute

Summary

Anchor tags support the "tel:" protocol in href attributes.

Change Benefit

This change supports the tel: attribute in the Rich Content Editor.

Affected User Roles

All Users

Users who switch to the HTML view in the Rich Content Editor can add an anchor tag that uses the “tel” protocol as part of the href attribute.

User Navigation

QR for Mobile Login Code Page

Summary

The QR for Mobile Login link can be accessed from the User Navigation Menu or from the user profile sidebar. Additionally, the QR code renders directly in the profile page instead of in a separate window.

Change Benefit

This change allows the QR code functionality to be linked in several Canvas areas.

Affected User Roles

All Users

When users access the QR for Mobile Login link, the link displays as its own page in the profile page. The page includes instructions for the QR code and renders the code directly in the interface instead of a separate window. Users can also access the QR code as part of the user profile sidebar instead of just from the User Navigation Menu.

Accessibility

Help Menu

The New indicator for links in the Help Menu are read by screen readers after the link title.

Quizzes

Question banks can be linked to a question group by keyboard users.

Conversations

Courses Search

Users with large course enrollments can view the More Courses option when composing a new message.

Explanation: When a user with a large number of enrollments tried to create a conversation and load the list of courses, the user was not able to use the More Courses option until all courses had been loaded in the background. However, the page did not show the user the page was still loading all courses.Canvas code has been updated to increase the pagination size allowed in the page and allow users to access the More Courses link faster.

Quizzes

Manually Graded Quiz Scores and SpeedGrader

Manually graded quiz scores do not transfer between submissions in SpeedGrader.

Explanation: When a manually graded quiz was graded in SpeedGrader, SpeedGrader intermittently caught previously saved question scores and populated them in the next student’s submission. Canvas code has been updated to not display previously graded quiz scores when navigating to the next student in SpeedGrader.

Moderated Quiz Attempts and Zero Points

Moderating a quiz does not affect the score column.

Explanation: When a classic quiz was moderated with either more time or an extra attempt, the score column was updated to zero. This behavior did not modify the quiz score but made instructors think the score was affected. Canvas code has been updated to not affect the score column when classic quizzes are moderated.

Multiple Questions in Question Banks and Chrome Browser

All questions within question banks display in Chrome.

Explanation: When a user attempted to move multiple questions to another question bank in Chrome, question banks with 20 or more questions were not listed. Canvas code has been updated to display question banks in Chrome.
