Discussion board with checkpoints and late penalties

Problem statement:

I am instructor at a community college in Virginia. I have implemented a late penalty for my course (3% per day up to a zero). This late penalty works as expected for all of my assignments and discussion boards that DO NOT USE the checkpoint grading option. What do I mean that it does not work? It DOES apply the late penalty if the initial response is late and it DOES apply the late penalty if the replies are late. What it DOES NOT do is allow me to override the number of days late. In a normal discussion board with no checkpoints, I can override the number of days late. When the discussion board includes the checkpoint grading, I try changing the number of days late, it goes back to what the system calculated for number of days late. I did find a WORK AROUND, but let's be honest - work arounds are band-aids. The work around is that for any discussion board post/reply in Speedgrader you have to follow these steps: Change the reply/post to None for the option under Late This will remove the number of days late Now, change it back to Late This will set the number of days late to zero (0) Now you can override the number of days late. This works but is a pain. Has anyone else noticed this? Is there a fix for this?

Proposed solution:

Allow the number of late days to be overwritten for any post/reply in Speedgrader for discussion boards with checkpoints. Again, the work around is ok, but not a permanent solution.
