At the moment, the Learning Mastery Gradebook displays achievement using a numerical format like 4/3, where the first number represents the student's score and the second number indicates the threshold for mastery. This format can be confusing for teachers, as it’s not immediately clear what the numbers mean without explanation. Students also see a similar format, such as 3/5 "Mastered", which is slightly more intuitive but still lacks clarity. Additionally, the student view only labels performance as either "Mastered" or "Not Mastered", limiting how we communicate progress and achievement. We would prefer to use descriptive performance levels (e.g., Emerging, Developing, Proficient, Advanced) to provide clearer, more meaningful feedback to both students and teachers. However, Canvas currently offers limited flexibility in how mastery is displayed and interpreted.
I would like to suggest an improvement to the Learning Mastery Gradebook by adding the option to use customisable descriptive performance levels instead of, or alongside, the current numerical format (e.g. 4/3). For example: 5/3 = Mastering 4/3 = Applying 3/3 = Engaging 2/3 = Exploring 1/3 = Beginning At the moment, students see in their Learning Mastery Markbook "Mastered" or "Not Mastered", which doesn’t give them much insight into their performance. It would be helpful if students could also see the custom descriptive levels, rather than just a binary label. For educational institutions wanting the "Compenent/Not Yet Competent" or "Mastered / Not Mastered" they could have 5/5 = "Mastered", 4/5 = "Mastered", 3/5 = "Mastered", 2/5 = "Not Mastered", 1/5 = "Not Mastered". I think this improvement will assist all institutions in better communicating student performance.
