[Modules] Assign students to a module

I would like to suggest the option to assign a group of students to a module.  There are times when the content within a module only pertains to a certain group of students. I inquired about this and was told the only way to do this is through an assignment.  There are times when an assignment isn't needed.

It would be great to have the ability to assign a module and link it to the syllabus and the module just like assignments.

This idea has been suggested repeatedly from at least 2015. Five years and so many people asking for this feature.

All any of these messages seem to ask is to be able to assign modules to specific groups. So one course with many modules, and a few groups each with individually assigned modules so they can only see their own modules. Simple you would have thought.

Nope, five years and this simple and obvious feature has not been implemented. All we get are work arounds. I am literally having to think of how I can implement similar functionality without just making lots of courses.

(here is one from 2015, last comment in 2020 asking for the same thing)

The questions are often marked solved by people just saying 'no you cannot do it'.

Below are some more examples of the many requests that have been ignored for this feature, including one from 2018 which says its on 'their radar'

Anyway, I wish you luck in finding a work around for this poor software design decision.

Thanks for sharing this idea. As it moves forward for broader discussion, you might also be interested in checking out the related conversation at Unlocking Modules for individual students .

As an instructor, I would love to have the ability to create modules that are section specific and/or student specific.  This provides yet another level of differentiation for instruction.  Not only do students need assignments focused on specific skills they are working on, but they also need corresponding instruction for those skills.  This applies to all students, whether they are achieving below, at, or above grade level expectations.  Based on what I have found in the Commons, only assignments, quizzes, and discussions can be sent to different sections.  These components are demonstrations of a student's learning, and do not necessarily provide access to differentiated course content.  As a work-around, teachers could use "assignments" for instruction, but this can be overwhelming for many students as they have to scroll through the assignments list; whereas the module feature in Canvas provides a great organizational component.

Allow modules to be assigned to certain students and or groups.

I would be awesome if you were able to add a feature where we can assign a module to specific students in the course so that they are the only ones who can see it.

I would like to be able to assign an entire module to selected students.  Right now this option exists only for graded assignments and quizzes.  I would like it so that a module can be "hidden" from all except the students it applies to.  This would allow me to create individualized interventions.

If would be helpful if teachers could publish modules/lessons for specific students.  This could be used when a student or students are out of school for an extended time. Once the module is closed it would be nice to open for individual students with extenuating circumstances without giving all students access.
