Ideal Settings for Inactive Students

I really like that we now have the inactive status for students. This helps to clarify the data for instructors; however, it can be confusing because Canvas is inconsistent on when and where it shows this data. I just added a " modifiedtitle="true" title="feature request for removing inactive students from the moderate this quiz page.  Please consider voting for this. Also, if you can think of any other inconsistencies, please add your comments and please link to any other feature requests that need some voting love.

I know this isn't super helpful, but I'd like to say that while I was originally excited about the Inactive state for students we have chosen not to use it because of the many different problems associated with it.

Agreed. We're putting this on a wait and see list to implement when the inactive students can be distinguished everywhere they appear from the instructor perspective, there are filters and the filters are set by default to not show the inactive students. The probable confusion and degradation of workflow seems to outweigh the benefits at this time.

It actually hasn't been too bad but people are just now starting find some of the issues we hadn't anticipated. Here is a quick run down from my testing.

Instructors see the following:

Gradebook - Inactive students don't display with default settings. Instructors can toggle between showing and hiding inactive students. Inactive students do display in the export file of the gradebook. Instructors have no way to filter before downloading the file.

People - Inactive students do display in the list and are tagged as inactive students. Instructors cannot filter them out to hide them. It would be nice to have the option to display inactive students like you can with concluded students.

SpeedGrader - Inactive students do display and the inactive tag is not list by their name. The inactive tag sits below the list and above the preview of the document. Instructors cannot filter them out to hide them. They can filter submissions which in most cases put inactive students at the bottom of the list. See Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-06-04) .

I would prefer the inactive tag be listed by the student's name and SpeedGrader have a filter to remove inactive students from the list.

Downloading Assignment submissions - The inactive student's content will be in the download file.

Moderate This Quiz Screen - This list display all inactive students with no inactive tag by their name. There is no way to filter out the inactive students.

Show Quiz Result - The inactive student will display but the inactive tag will not be listed by their name. There is no way to filter out inactive students. This is also true when viewing the inactive student's attempt.

Attendance - Inactive students do not display at all nor is there a way to see the data associated with them here. This could be an issue.

Discussion posts - If the student posts while active and then is later marked as inactive, the post will remain and the inactive tag will display by the student's name to the instructor. Students will also see the post but not the inactive tag by the student's name.
