Microsoft Teams
Does this UX/UI look familiar? Canvas? Nope. It's Microsoft Teams which launches today. (A #slack competitor)

rgibson1. is it possible to integrate Microsoft Teams into Canvas? I saw an article (Your Canvas Experience, Now Available in Microsoft Teams | blog.canvaslms.com ) but not sure of the current status. I would like to have the Teams integrated into my Canvas course so students could click and chat with me in Teams.

Hi everyone! Instructure isn’t currently working on an integration, however we are in regular conversations with Microsoft about a potential future integration with Teams. Please continue to share your interest with your institution's Canvas Administration team. The more specific you can be about what you would like to see with an integration, the better! We will keep you posted as things progress on our side as well.

One of the things I'd particularly like about a Teams integration is that we find our students (and many of our instructors) actively dislike discussion forums (for all kinds of reasons). Many of them are using alternate discussion platforms like Slack and Ryver. Since Teams is basically a Slack clone, this would provide a more secure avenue for these instructors to have (largely) the same functionality.
We're only just getting started with our Office 365 rollout, but this would be a really nice carrot for our early adopters.

I do think an LTI integration would be beneficial for all schools using O365 products. Teams isn't just a slack competitor, but is also quickly becoming a chat client, teleconference tool, collaboration space, communication space, ... The product has potential. An integration similar to how OneDrive is now integrated into Canvas thanks to LTI (as a colloboration option) would be my - personal - first choice.
Please check out the O365 Microsoft Teams uservoice channel. There's a post about LTI integration. It can use some upvotes. LTI integration Teams - Uservoice

Hi Melissa,
If you're still taking suggestions to Microsoft, I would like to nominate an integration between Assessments in Teams and Canvas Grade book via APIs.
This would allow teachers to use the right tool for the right job when building formative and summative tasks, but importantly, also allow them to keep the grades and feedback in the LMS (Canvas).
thanks,
David

It would be great if there were a Canvas integration for Microsoft Teams. Since Skype for Business Online will be retired and support ends on 07/31/2021 our institution is already considering moving over to Microsoft Teams.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/search?alpha=Skype%20for%20Business%20Online
While there is Skype for Business Server 2019 (mainstream support ends 01/09/2024; extended support ends 10/14/2025), I doubt Microsoft will create newer versions of Skype for Business Server as they are encouraging migration to Microsoft Teams.

And that's the issue @jrboek - students want it to be seamless and not have to work from two different locations.

Although I doubt it is possible (or even desirable) to have 'everything' in the same place, Teams is actually designed to be a hub for communication and to bring things together, as in files from OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox, ... and the channels are just like chat. So communication happens with chat and posts instead of mail. It is quite possible by the way to integratie information from Canvas into teams using API's and web services.
Providing and LTI integration with Teams (since there is also an for EDU version) would be very beneficial and I hope something like this will be available soon.

Leading a training tomorrow at my institution for all users (admin, faculty, etc.) on Teams and wanted to double check that I didn't miss an integration option with Canvas as I recently came across this on a Teams/Microsoft info page:
----------------
Support rich collaboration and seamless experiences with integrated apps from Office 365 like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote Class Notebook, and education partners like busuu, Canvas, Flipgrid, and Kahoot!
Microsoft Teams Getting Started Guide for Educators - Teams for Education
----------------
Thought I might be missing something but I can't find anything in Teams or on here. Also not seeing a Kahoot! option.

I am also interested in if this option will become an integration or part of the existing one. I hope this means that there is progress. Good luck with your training.
Have a great day!

I would like to see if theres some integrations as well. Even If I can embed it as a feed. My thought it maybe I can use the Teams for posting daily assignments and such. But then use canvas for submitting the assignments.
thanks

I am off to the BETT conference in London next week where Microsoft and Canvas have stands. Going to ask each about the developments.
My own personal belief is that we cannot carry on with separate systems. We need to find some way to integrate both and find ways that we get the best out of Office365 and Canvas. Also need to find a way that allows OneNote and Canvas to become better companions and not for teachers to see this as an either /or situation.
My big concern with Canvas is that not only are we are not seeing any new developments on the Microsoft integration front but there are so many ideas of their own features desperately needing development and improvement. Just not seeing this happening despite the promise more designers and developers and a focus on core features.
The proposed buy-out and the issues surrounding it seem almost to be paralysing any developments - at least that is what it feels like to the outsider (and one who invests significantly in the Community).

No, I did not.
To be honest, it was a pretty disappointing affair. I thought Instructure would have their own area but for some reason they were a very small part of a larger Microsoft location. I still need to understand why this was the case - not sure if it is a good thing or a bad thing?
Perhaps it will be better to contact my CSM?

Hey Gideon
The only thing I can say here is that I hope you will track the feature improvements we roll out in the near and middle term future. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks Scott for your reply and whilst this is not meant as any criticism of you (as you were very kind to reply) but my school would like to know more than just "near/middle term future" and being "pleasantly surprised".
The development of Microsoft Team would be a major project for the organisation requiring substantial strategic planning, development and time commitment - not to mention costs!
If Instructure has a roadmap planned with Microsoft including development of the Office365 integration then perhaps between the two organisation they could commit to something more transparent/explicit with some actual dates?
I note that the initial discussion started by rgibson1 is now three years old and my post on similar matters - https://community.canvaslms.com/people/Gideon.Williams is nearly 9 months old.
Sorry, rather frustrated with the pace of things and too many key features waiting to be made better...

Hi Gideon,
Your are welcome and absolutely no affront taken. I can definitely understand your frustration with the lack of development around the integration with Microsoft Team. I honestly don't know where the prerogative would lie between the two companies but suspect it would be with the much larger of the two. What I was speaking to more specifically is incremental improvements to native Canvas features. And I do apologize for being vague. Hope to see you at the next Canvascon in EMEA.

This looks promising.
Does anyone know how this deals with FERPA?
What happens to student data? does Microsoft own/sell/or do something else with it?
Can teachers trust student data is kept in a manner that is FERPA compliant?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

Great news that the integration is here!
Has anybody got this set up and working yet?
I would love to hear about some of the experiences people are having.
Specifically:
- Have teachers been able to adapt well? Using the RCE to book meetings?
- Have students able to use access the meetings easily?
We're a K-12 school so this is something we have to consider. - Has the integration been reliable?
Integrations are great when they work well. I would love to hear that staff and students invited to Teams meetings are getting to those meetings easily. - Also I'd love to hear how any early adopters have gone with loading?
Given the current climate, with COVID-19 forcing everyone into isolation, online meetings are going to be very popular.
Have institutions using the TEAMS integration been able to use them on a large scale? (Lots of meetings at the same time).
Does this have an affect on the performance?
Thanks again everyone!

How do I add on my Free for teacher account? I asked during the youtube video today and said it was available but never went over how to add.
