Using clickable areas on an image as an answer in a Quiz

Jump to solution

Another instructor has asked about quiz questions where the answer is based upon the student clicking on an area in an image.(The instructor has a lot of questions with such answers in another LMS and wants to import them.) Has anyone implemented such a quiz in Canvas?

According to https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=70149 there is no Canvas equivalent of a drag and drop marker.

While one might use an HTML <area> tag (i.e., using a map and area shape) to name clickable regions of the image (see HTML area tag), the map tag is not supported in Canvas.

The only alternative that I have been able to think of is using an external tool via LTI that would enable the user to make their selection and would return the answer based upon either the href or the alt property of the area OR perhaps the external tool has to actually have the list of points associated with each of the possible answers and just the return the points.

Clickable area (or "hot spot") questions are part of the new Quizzing engine coming out this year. This presentation is from Instructure Con 2016, but will give you a good idea of some of the cool stuff coming (hot spot question included!)

Hi  @maguire ‌,

It looks like you are okay with just the points being returned to Canvas.  With that being the case, you could use a SCORM compliant tool like Articulate Storyline, Articulate Quizmaker, Adobe Captivate, or others in the same category.   Create the drag and drop, or clickable quiz in there, package it as a SCORM zip file, and upload it to the course.

You will need to make sure that you have the SCORM LTI activated.  And again, this will only return the score and not any other information.

See How do I import SCORM files as an assignment?   for more info.

Thanks for the link to the video!  This looks awesome!!!!  I was watching it on mute, because the rest of the family couldn't care less about the new quizzing engine coming out this year, but what I was able to see looks very exciting.  I'm definitely going to watch this whole presentation with the sound on tomorrow.
